Devin Alexander grew up as the only day human in a world surrounded by night humans who drank blood, sometimes his blood. He spent his life training toward one goal: the protection of one of those blood drinkers, Arianna Grace. But what is he supposed to do when the blue-eyed girl of the legends doesn’t need him anymore? What does his life mean then? How is a guy supposed to move on when the girl he has yearned over for a decade has chosen someone else?

Before he can even start to figure out his new life without Arianna, Devin has to deal with another problem. He needs to take care of some unfinished business with a night human he has known for less than a month, but with whom he is magically bound.

Vanessa McKinny has promised that she knows a way to undo the spell she placed on Devin to save his life. Devin would do anything to break the bond to be free of her, even if it means traveling to the sidhe village, a place inhabited by a race of night humans that has not had a day human visitor in more than a hundred years. If he doesn’t want to get stuck, he must work with Nessa to find a way to break the bond. Only then can Devin have time to get back to finding his new goal in life, unless he discovers that his path lies with the sidhe.

Devin's new goal- protecting Nessa:

“What’s wrong?” she asked. She looked over his shoulder and quickly around the room, but didn’t see anything.
“We need to dance our way out of here,” Devin replied quietly, while still spinning them in circles. “Just follow my lead.”
Nessa wanted to ask more, but Devin dipped her down suddenly with one hand. Pulling her back up, his fist pressed against her back, now holding an arrow he grabbed from an assassination attempt. No one saw the invisible arrow, but Devin still held onto it. After a few more quick spins that didn’t allow Nessa to ask more questions, yet brought them five feet closer to the exit, Devin caught a second arrow from a different assassin. The first assassin was still waiting. Even the assassins didn’t see their own arrows. As they were within ten feet of leaving, Nessa finally protested.
“Devin, what is going on?” she asked, a bit winded from dancing.
‘Not now. I’m trying to save your life,’ Devin answered silently. Nessa’s eyes went big. She obviously hadn’t considered the danger to her life. ‘Now duck,’ he ordered.
Nessa instantly bent down and pretended to adjust her dresses hem. Devin held out his empty hand to help her stand back up. She smiled and stood, though there was still hesitation in her eyes. She couldn’t see the arrows in his hand. Devin smiled back, and she relaxed a little. Nessa slipped her hands back to his shoulders, and Devin took the lead again, pulling her toward the exit on the opposite side of the room from their table.
‘Dinner, dance, and then done?’ Devin asked, reiterating that they were done. He didn’t expect any kind of protest, but he had to be sure that they fulfilled the role they were supposed to play.

Excerpt

I was dreaming—some disjointed, nonsensical nightmare—when I felt a heavy pressure on my chest; like someone was sitting on me. I worked to breathe as it became a little harder to push air in and out of my lungs. The feelings of anxiety and doom returned ten-fold and my eyes flew open. Of course all I saw was darkness. An immense black hole where there used to be light.
With a rush of adrenaline I raised my hands to push at whatever was on my chest. I twisted my hips, trying to turn to my side. Something gripped my wrists and forced my hands to the ground beside my head. I felt the weight shift down and legs like a wrestler’s wrap around my knees, pinning me in place with the strength of a bear. A scream froze in my throat. No sound could escape through the icicles of my vocal cords.
A mouth pressed against my ear. The breath unnaturally hot as an unfamiliar man’s voice whispered, “Shhh, Paige. Everything’s fine. You want this. You want me. You’ll never want anything more than what I’m going to give you right now. Just relax and enjoy.” His voice flowed like melted chocolate—smooth, sweet, and addicting.
The most terrifying thing about the words he breathed into my ear was—I believed them. The fear that wrapped around my heart like the tentacles of an octopus just slithered away—replaced by desire as his lips closed over mine, hot and moist. I kissed him back with great intensity. My mind became fuzzy and thoughts were slow to form.

Feature & Follow Friday

The Feature & Follow is hosted by TWO hosts, Parajunkee of Parajunkee’s View and Alison of Alison Can Read. Each host will have their own Feature Blog and this way it’ll allow us to show off more new blogs!
How does this work? The goal is to increase blog followers and make friends. First you leave your name here on this post, (using the linky tools — keep scrolling!) then you create a post on your own blog that links back to this post (easiest way is to just grab the code at the end of the Linky and put it in your post) and then you visit as many blogs as you can and tell them “hi” in their comments (on the post that has the #FF image). You follow them, they follow you. Win. Win. Just make sure to follow back if someone follows you!

This week's question:

Have any pets? Tell us or show us!

I have four cats and three dogs.

Three of my cats are rescues and are just your standard alley cat. My fourth is a Selkirk Rex who won several best in show awards as a kitten before he became a member of our household. My cat, Mouse, was left behind by the neighbors when they moved. He's the one I always complain about helping me write. He likes to press the keys of my laptop with his paws.

Kilala is my smallest dog. She's a Papillon, and I'm holding her in my profile picture. I also have a standard Goldendoodle, Gucci, who has the height of a Poodle with the girth of a Golden Retriever. He weighs about 75 pounds and can be quite intimidating when he bares his teeth. Yes, even though he's a cute, fluffy white dog, he thinks he's a guard dog. My middle dog is a miniature Goldendoodle named Aurora. She's the sweetest of my brood.

Aurora at 8 weeks

You can follow however you like. I'm not picky :)

Book Blast: Life in the Palace by Catherine Green - Giveaway

Life in the PalaceLife in the Palace

Catherine Green

“We need to talk,” Tal said. Then I knew it was going to go badly. ‘We need to talk’ is the conversational equivalent of walking into your basement without turning on the light, on a dark and stormy night, when a known psychopath is on the loose. You might as well cut to the chase and slit your own throat. Chloe Diaz assumed three things: that when Tal said that she was one of The People sent from heaven to maintain the cosmic balance, it was code for ‘I’m a pamphlet distributing, incense burning, religious weirdo;’ that the gorgeous Seth Wilks would never be her soul mate and that she’d never have to choose between them. Chloe was wrong. Now the future of the world is in her hands, but what if price is too great to pay?

Download a FREE copy now!

This is a brief description of the plot:
After a lifetime in the shadow of her sister, Chloe is severely phobic of the chronically cool. Seth is everything she avoids; a pre-med philosophy major who works in a bar, plays in a band and is so good looking that grown women stare at him in the street. But it’s hard to say no to your soul mate. Thinking she’s maxed out her supply of destiny, Chloe settles down to enjoy the happily-ever-after. Tal says that she’s one of The People sent from heaven to maintain the cosmic balance. Chloe assumes this is code for ‘I’m a pamphlet distributing, incense burning, religious weirdo.’ Actually Tal’s main extracurricular activity is fighting the forces of Oblivion. The People never need to hide what they are because no one ever believes them. Until Chloe does.   Chloe sets out to help Tal and The People as much as she can as an outsider. Seth says as long as no one wears their underpants on the outside Chloe can do what she likes. What he doesn’t say is that he’s also one of The People, although non-practicing. But as the Final Battle draws nearer, Chloe realizes it’s time for Seth to go collect his regulation sword. The only thing standing in his way is her. Seth says he’ll give up his place in heaven to stay with her. Chloe must choose between Seth’s soul and her own happiness.

Praise for Life in the Palace

An interesting take on the paranormal romance genre. …..While other books in the genre have unrealistic buy in to the acceptance of someone from the outside entering a "new world" Life in the Palace handled it from both the main character looking in and the dwellers of the Palace looking out at this person trying to enter their world. …….I am so happy to hear that there are more books in the series! – Yonit on Goodreads

I loved this world that Catherine Green created. I happily lost myself in the life & deep love between Chloe & Seth …..I loved the attention to detail, the fleshing out of the world around them, the obvious growth of all the characters... Even the heartbreaking choices made at the end. Book two I cannot wait to read! – Ebon Darkmyth on Smashwords Loved it, great story line, fun characters and after reading it and thinking deeply about the duality of our lives, it made my prayers come alive! – Rebecca Wittenstein on Amazon.com

This book introduces you to a whole host of characters that you want to meet in real life. ….The action keeps you reading, while the budding love between Seth and Chloe makes you breathless. A great read. – Cypora Cohen on Amazon.co.uk

One of only three remaining demon-stalking witches, Colleen is almost the last of her kind. Along with her familiar, a changeling spirit, she was hoping for a few months of quiet, running a small magicians’ supply store in Fairbanks, Alaska. Peace isn’t in the cards, though. Demons are raising hell in Seattle. She’s on her way out the door to help, when a Sidhe shows up and demands she accompany him to northern England to quell a demon uprising there.

Duncan swallowed uneasy feelings when the Sidhe foisted demon containment off onto the witches two hundred years before. He’s annoyed when the Sidhe leader sends him to haul a witch across the Atlantic to bail them out. Until he sees the witch in question. Colleen is unquestionably the most beautiful woman he’s ever laid eyes on. Strong and gutsy, too. When she refuses to come with him, because she’s needed in Seattle, he immediately offers his assistance. Anything to remain in her presence.

Colleen can’t believe how gorgeous the Sidhe is, but she doesn’t have time for such nonsense. She, Jenna, and Roz are the only hedge Earth has against being overrun by Hell’s minions. Even with help from a powerful magic wielder like Duncan, the odds aren’t good and the demons know it. Sensing victory is within their grasp, they close in for the kill.

Excerpt

…The bells around the shop door clanged a discordant riot of notes. “Crap!” Jenna shot to her feet. “I should have locked the damned door.”
“Back to cat form.” Colleen flicked her fingers at Bubba, who shrank obligingly and slithered out of clothing, which puddled around him. She snatched up his shirt and pants and dropped them back into the canister.
“I say,” a strongly accented male voice called out. “Is anyone here?”
“I’ll take care of the Brit,” Colleen mouthed. “Take Bubba to the basement and practice.”
She got to her feet and stepped past the curtain. “Yes?” She gazed around the dimly lit store for their customer.
A tall, powerfully built man, wearing dark slacks and a dark turtleneck, strode toward her, a woolen greatcoat slung over one arm. His white-blond hair was drawn back into a queue. Arresting facial bones—sculpted cheeks, strong jaw, high forehead—captured her attention and stole her breath. He was quite possibly the most gorgeous man she’d ever laid eyes on. Discerning green eyes zeroed in on her face, caught her gaze, and held it. Magic danced around him in a numinous shroud. Strong magic.
What was he?
And then she knew. Daoine Sidhe. The man had to be Sidhe royalty. No wonder he was so stunning it almost hurt to look at him.
Colleen held her ground. She placed her feet shoulder width apart and crossed her arms over her chest. “What can I help you with?”
“Colleen Kelly?”
Okay, so he knows who I am. Doesn’t mean a thing. He’s Sidhe. Could have plucked my name right out of my head. “That would be me. How can I help you?” she repeated, burying a desire to lick nervously at her lips.
“Time is short. I’ve been hunting you for a while now. Come closer, witch. We need to talk.”

My Review: I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Witch's Bounty is a fast-paced, fun adventure featuring demon fighting witches, an adorable changeling, and a sexy as sin Sidhe. There's never a dull moment in this story as Colleen and her friends race against time to stop powerful demons from destroying everything in their path.

I love Colleen, Jenna, and Roz. They are sassy, strong heroines who take their responsibility as demon-stalkers very seriously. The interaction between the three is witty, really they act more like sisters than friends. I was somewhat surprised when Colleen fell so hard, so fast for Duncan. But he is Sidhe, so I guess that would make him very hard to resist. Besides, if every day might be your last, why not throw yourself into an insta-love relationship?

Duncan was almost too good to be true. I kept waiting for the catch, for him to show his true colors. But it appears he really is that much of a hero. He's so in love with Colleen he'd do anything for her, including giving up immortality. But he's a millenium or so old-- maybe immortality means less after living for so long. This guy is every woman's dream come true: sweet, sexy, strong, caring... the list goes on.

I adored the changeling, Bubba. I think he may just be the best character in the book. Like I said earlier, the story reads lightning fast. It's a fun story full of battles. Every time I expected a snag, things still went rather smoothly for our heroes. It makes for a light, enjoyable time.

About the Author

Ann Gimpel is a mountaineer at heart. Recently retired from a long career as a psychologist, she remembers many hours at her desk where her body may have been stuck inside four walls, but her soul was planning yet one more trip to the backcountry. Around the turn of the last century (that would be 2000, not 1900!), she managed to finagle moving to the Eastern Sierra, a mecca for those in love with the mountains. It was during long backcountry treks that Ann’s writing evolved. Unlike some who see the backcountry as an excuse to drag friends and relatives along, Ann prefers solitude. Stories always ran around in her head on those journeys, sometimes as a hedge against abject terror when challenging conditions made her fear for her life, sometimes for company. Eventually, she returned from a trip and sat down at the computer. Three months later, a five hundred page novel emerged. Oh, it wasn’t very good, but it was a beginning. And, she learned a lot between writing that novel and its sequel.

Around that time, a friend of hers suggested she try her hand at short stories. It didn’t take long before that first story found its way into print and they’ve been accepted pretty regularly since then. One of Ann’s passions has always been ecology, so her tales often have a green twist.

In addition to writing, Ann enjoys wilderness photography. She lugs pounds of camera equipment in her backpack to distant locales every year. A standing joke is that over ten percent of her pack weight is camera gear which means someone else has to carry the food! That someone is her husband. They’ve shared a life together for a very long time. Children, grandchildren and three wolf hybrids round out their family.

Guest Post by James Schannep

How do you fool yourself?

Every mystery writer is asked this question at some point in their career. That probably isn’t a big shocker. But every mystery writer also asked themselves this question before they started writing mysteries. After all, isn’t that the hardest part? Essentially writing a book so that it appears one set of events occurs, only to have a believable reveal to a second, third or even fourth set of events as the truth.

My struggle, however, was another beast entirely. With my Click Your Poison series, I write interactive fiction (so-called “gamebooks”) for a mature audience. Think of it as Choose Your Own Adventure for grownups. So when I decided to set out and create an interactive mystery, one where the reader is pit against the villain directly, I wondered just how I’d fool myself. As far as I know, no one has ever attempted a literarily puzzle like this one. It felt like I tasked myself with constructing a Rubix cube from scratch. I had nowhere to look for answers, or so I felt initially.

But the reality, is that the pieces of the puzzle were already out there, I just had to figure out where they fit. In INFECTED (my first Click Your Poison book) I’d learned many tools of the trade for interactive fiction. All I had to do was combine that knowledge with traditional mystery writing and—presto changeo—something new entered the world.

Step one: Write the mystery backwards. The thing about a fair-play mystery (one in which the reader can solve the case themselves), is that there must be sufficient evidence and clues found within the text. So, before you do anything else, you must have the “what actually occurred” firmly planted in your mind.
Step two: Bury the truth. A great piece of advice I came across, is that any character introduced in a mystery must be related to the plot (however tangentially). If you follow this rule, the next part is to give your main list of suspects a sufficient motivation and opportunity. Cover your “what actually occurred” with several layers of “what could have occurred” and then finally decorate it in a pretty layer of “what the story-world would have looked like if nothing had occurred.”

Step three: Keep a map. You need to know where you buried the truth, after all, and what steps are required to find it once again. This is especially true in interactive fiction. Unless you’re reading this as a computer AI (in which case, I’m very flattered), you’ll have a hard time remembering so many parallel timelines and events. I keep detailed flowcharts in the hopes that I won’t get lost in my own mind.

Step four: Smooth out the creases. Through editing, and peer feedback, you should know if you’ve fooled yourself. If so—then perhaps you’ll have fooled the reader as well.

If I’ve done my job, you’ll have a very difficult (but not impossible) time solving the mystery found in MURDERED. In fact, it’s my sincere hope that a few of you will think you’ve solved the mystery and will but down the book, ignore your lingering doubts, and feel satisfied. But I hope many more of you will follow your gut to the conclusion and not let me fool you for long.

Aubrie Dionne

Paranormal Romance

Dr. Gail Phillips steps onto the shores of Loch Ness to disprove the Loch Ness monster theory for good so everyone can stop wasting their time. As a marine biologist with a background in archeology, she’s convinced all of the world’s myths such as Big Foot, the Tasmanian devil, and even Nessie are lies. Her father disappeared while following Yettie tracks in the Alps, and she doesn’t want to lose another mislead soul.

Flynn Maloney comes from a family of fanatic cryptozoologists. As a native of Scotland, he believes in Nessie as strong as Gail believes in science. Despite his initial attraction for her, he’s joined her research team to prove her wrong. He wants to find Nessie for a special girl in his life, to show her dreams really can come true.

As they conduct sonar studies and sweeps of the lake, their differing opinions are at odds with their budding attraction. Gail doesn’t believe in anything unscientific, such as romance, thinking the charming Flynn Maloney is full of baloney. Flynn can’t believe he’s falling for someone with no imagination or faith. To make matters worse, their videographer is covering his true identity. Together they must unravel his plan before he destroys everything they are working for. Will Gail force Flynn to question his faith, or will she discover more than she bargained for in the Scottish highlands?

Aubrie Dionne's Top 9 List

Top Nine Places I’d Like To Visit:

#1. Tatooine - The cantina in Star Wars. Yeah, I’d LOVE to dance to the cantina song played by those strange ant beings on those oboe like instruments and sit with Han Solo at his table and haggle a price for a trip on the Millenium Falcon. I might need a bodyguard...or two.

#2. Rivendell - home of the Elves in Lord of the Rings. Legolas could teach me how to hold a bow, and I love to play one of those elfin flutes. Everyone there looks so pretty, and I love salad- which is what they eat in The Hobbit.

#3. King’s Landing in Game of Thrones. I’d love to meet Tyrion Lannister. Although, I don’t think he’d find me very interesting to talk to. The castle looks so beautiful even though it’s so dangerous. I might need a few more bodyguards for this one.

#4. The Enterprise - Starship and home of The Next Generation. It’s my dream to sit in the Captain's chair. I’d love to learn how to fly the ship and how warp drive really works- although I may not understand it.

#5. Starfleet Academy - The training school where everyone in Star Trek goes. It looks like it’s somewhere in Los Angeles in the future. I’m sure the classes would be difficult, but I’d love to give it a try!

#6. Camelot - Oh, I’d love to meet Merlin and see some magic! Maybe watch a sword fight or a lance tournament. I’d buy one of those beautiful medieval gowns.

#7. Deep Space Nine - the space station. I’d get a drink at Quark’s, visit Odo in security- although I don’t think he’d pay much attention to me unless I stole something. I’d love to meet commander Sisko or Dax.

#8. Stanley Hotel - the hotel that inspired Stephen King to write “The Shining.” I’d love to go for a walk in the hedge garden. Although, I wouldn’t stay the night. hehe

#9. The maze in Labyrinth. I’d like to find my way to the goblin king in the center. Looks like so much fun! And the ball with all the pretty dresses and facemasks- sign me up!

Book Blast: The Epherium Chronicles by T.D. Wilson - Excerpt, Trailer & Giveaway

EmbraceThe Epherium Chronicles: Embrace

Book One of The Epherium Chronicles Hope.

Captain James Hood of the Earth Defense Forces remembers what it felt like. Twenty-five years ago, it surged through him as a young boy watching the colony ships launched by mega-corporation Epherium rocket away. He, like so many others, dreamed of following in the colonists' footsteps. He wanted to help settle a new world—to be something greater. Then came the war... Hope. During years of vicious conflict with an insectoid alien race, it was nearly lost. Though Earth has slowly rebuilt in the six years since the war, overcrowding and an unstable sun have made life increasingly inhospitable. When mysterious signals from the nearly forgotten colony ships are received, Hood is ordered to embark on a dangerous reconnaissance mission. Could humanity's future sit among the stars? Hope. Hood needs it now more than ever. As secrets about the original colonists are revealed and the Epherium Corporation's dark agenda is exposed, new adversaries threaten the mission, proving more dangerous to Earth than their already formidable foes…

Praise

From Laura (5 star reviewer on Amazon) "I was shocked about how fast the author sucked me into a new world, a world that I am impatiently awaiting the next in the series. I read from another reviewer that it would make a great television series and I would have to agree with that reviewer."

From Kathryn Svendsen of Kathryn's Shelf Full of Books Blog (4 star review) : "It was a delight to read. Mr. Wilson did an excellent job of introducing each of the many characters involved in this large crew. There were many people to keep track of, and like a movie we found out a bit about the character of each one as we went along."

“I have an idea about that,” Hood said as he opened a channel to Engineering. “Mr. Whitaker. I need that shield of yours.”

Whitaker responded slightly out of breath. “Sorry, Captain. I can’t give it to you. That second rock that smacked us caused one of the reactors to scram, so we shut it down. Until we get that stable and some more juice in the batteries, I can’t power it up.”

Hood muttered under his breath as he pounded his fist on his chair. He took a deep breath, and let it out slowly as he closed the channel.

“Alright, our ace is out of commission,” he told Sanchez, “and even with the best of my contingency plans, we are going to have to do this the hard way.”

“You have multiple contingency plans for this?” Sanchez asked as he pointed to the viewport and the many asteroids floating nearby. Hood looked at Sanchez and raised a single eyebrow. “Forget I asked,” Sanchez said.
