That night, as Buddy kept me company, I fell asleep to the sound of wind howling through the trees outside. Plagued with dreams of wolves, I tossed and turned until I slipped into a deep slumber.

When dawn finally broke, I was covered in a thin sheen of sweat, and my head was stuffed with cotton wool. I’d slept but not really. A heavy burden was over my heart, and my body had become twisted in the quilt, my feet trapped.

He started, his head shooting up, and when he saw me, he rolled and fell off the end of the bed, hitting the floor with a thud. Scrambling to his feet, his face turned a deep shade of crimson.

“Oh, shit,” he cursed, covering his junk with his hands. “Oh, cac.”

“Cac?” I yelled. “I’ll give you bloody Irish cac!”

Grabbing the lamp on the bedside table, I pushed up onto my knees and swung it with all my might. The plug popped out of the wall, and the shade barely missed Boone’s face, but the cord came around and whipped him directly on his bare ass.

He howled in pain and retreated across the room.

“Pervert!” I shrieked.

“Let me explain,” he said, holding up his hands and leaving nothing to the imagination.

“Explain? What’s there to explain?” I shouted, trying not to look at his you-know-what. “You were asleep on the end of my bed…naked!” I swung the lamp at him again, barely missing his head.

“You’re still standing there. I can see your meat and two veg!”

“Oh, cac,” he said again. “I didn’t mean for you to find out this way…”

“Find out what? That you’re a pervert, who sneaks into women’s homes butt naked?”

Interview with T.S. Hall, Author of Sonora and the Eye of the Titans

Welcome to T.S. Hall, author of Sonora and the Eye of the Titans! He was kind enough to answer a few questions today.

Tell us about the main character in Sonora and the Eye of the Titans. Who is Allora?

~ Allora is a shy, yet opinionated teenager who is unaware of her subtle beauty. She is coming to terms with her inner strength and otherworldly origin, while still trying to feel normal in the high school environment. Her confidence builds as the story moves along. The issues that she finds important also shifts. With that, the pressure of her lineage brings its own set of problems and she struggles to find the right path. She is also very strong-willed, intelligent, kind, and honest girl.

What inspired the story? Did you do any special research while prepping and writing?

~ The story was inspired by a vivid dream. I wrote the book for 3 months afterwards, with no real knowledge or prep work beforehand. During the editing process, I did a lot of research on Greek, Roman, and Egyptian mythology, which helped with grounding the story in a familiar setting.

Is this a standalone novel or will it be part of a series?

~ This is the first book in a five-part series.

The book looks like an interesting mesh of urban fantasy, mythology, and science fiction. Tell us a bit about how they blend together in the story.

~ The books are definitely a mesh of all three genres. I’ve tried to create a world where magic is explained through science, while also making magic unexplainable, just as spirituality requires us to believe in that which we can not see. Regarding mythology, I always wondered why the ancient gods of our stories were so flawed. That made no sense to me, unless those beings were really just mortals with special gifts or abilities beyond human comprehension at that point in time.

What are you reading right now, or what was the last book you read?

~ Last two books I read were Red Rising and I Am Pilgrim. My reading selection is rather diverse. I love all books - even romantic comedy ;)

Fun Question—If you could have dinner with any fictional character, who would you entertain? What would you serve?

~ The Mad Hatter! Oh, god that would be hilariously fun! I would serve coffee instead of tea just to see what he would do.

Is there anything else you’d like your readers to know about you or your novel?

~ I’m actually heading out on a 6-month book tour starting in Portland, OR at the end of May. I’ll be wandering around the US going in a clockwise circle on the outer states and visiting indie bookstores along the way. If you follow the book tour site, it’ll show where I’m heading next!

Top Ten Fictional Villains I Feel Sorry For by Brett Armstrong, Author of Day Moon

Please help me welcome my fellow Clean Reads author, Brett Armstrong, to the blog today. His new YA urban sci-fi novel, Day Moon, looks fantastic!!

While I can’t say I’m in the following character’s camps or agree with any of their ethos, these are the:

Top Ten Fictional Villains I Feel Sorry For…

10.  Mr. Freeze (Batman the Animated Series|TV) – Victor Fries was just a scientist trying to cure his wife of a terminal illness when a greedy industrialist made him permanently seek the cold and lose his wife in the process.  Mr. Freeze can be cruel, but as a grieving husband whose life-work was ruined, he’s a bit more easy to sympathize with than a lot of villains.

9. Captain Hook (Peter Pan|Play) – Peter Pan cut off his hand and fed it to a crocodile which is determined to finish him off… and we cheer for Peter Pan?  It’s really interesting because JM Barrie’s initial portrayal of Peter Pan makes him seem like the villain and Captain Hook as “not wholly unheroic”.

8. Bowser (Mario|Video Games) – Bowser kidnaps Princess Peach, a rival dictator, and a plumber from Brooklyn (Mario) shows up and starts taking out Bowser’s children one by one. 

7. Cato (The Hunger Games| Book/Movie) – From birth he was raised to fight in the Hunger Games and when he got there, it was too late when he realized he wasn’t the prized champion he thought.  If he had thought it through, maybe he would have released Peeta and could have stood in defiance too.  Either way he had one of the most horrific deaths in a story.

6. Smeagol (The Lord of the Rings| Books/Movies) – He accidentally found the One Ring, killed his best friend, and then turned into a pale, hunched skeleton of his former self who ate fish raw and had a terrible cough.  Oh, and he went insane and didn’t remember what potatoes are…

5. Robert Fischer (Inception|Movie) – The entire premise of the movie is that one businessman fears what will happen when the son of a rival inherits the family business and wants to have him break up his company through dream coercion.  But Robert never reveals any evil plans along the way, so we don’t really know if he was ever going to be so malevolent in the first place.

4. Imhotep (The Mummy| Movies) – So messing around with Pharoah’s wife was a bad idea all around, but the idea that Imhotep suffered a lot of horrible things and was doing everything he did for love makes him seem a little less monstrous than some of the classic movie monsters.

3. Magneto (X-Men | Movies/Comics) – Magneto’s backstory is pretty tragic.  He was a Holocaust victim and once he had grown up and reintegrated into society, his wife and child were killed in front of him because he was a mutant.  Most of his schemes do not begin involving extreme violence against normal people (ex. Asteroid-M) and he often espouses a separatist policy… it just rarely works out that neatly.

2. Cats in General (Various| TV, Movies, etc.) – Pete, Sylvester, Tom, Meowth, Shere Khan…

1. Macbeth (Macbeth| Play) – It may be my Scottish ancestry rising up, or the fact that there was a real Macbeth whose rule wasn’t characterized as bad by historians, or the fact that evil witches and an ambitious wife awoke the worst in man who begins the play as otherwise honorable.

Wow! I am never going to look at Mario games the same. I think that many villains have extraordinary backstories. While we can't condone their actions, we certainly relate to the feelings. Perhaps that's why we all love a good villain so much. They get their revenge rather than waiting for karma to catch up. Cats though... I love cats, and they do get a bad rap!

1. I have no sense of direction. When I drive somewhere I remember the beginning of the route and the end but I lose the middle part that connects the two.
2. My decorating style can best be described as dog-fur-covered furniture accented by
3. dog-fur-covered carpet with a sprinkling of dog toys for added color.
4. I know the names of my neighbors’ dogs, but not the names of my neighbors.
5. I’m a huge fan of Supernatural. When the lights flicker in my house, I panic for a moment before I realize it’s just the light bulb burning out.
6. I carry snacks everywhere.
7. I’m addicted to solitaire on my phone and have to win a game before I can stop playing.
8. I dream of having floor to ceiling bookshelves with one of those sliding ladders.
9. I’m addicted to online clearance shopping and paying full price for anything makes me cranky.
