The Wolf of Kisimul Castle by Heather McCollum

The Wolf of Kisimul Castle
Heather McCollum

Published by: Entangled Publishing
Publication date: August 14th 2017
Genres: Adult, Historical, Romance
Mairi Maclean is kidnapped on her wedding day by the enemy of her dead husband. Taken north to the water-surrounded Kisimul Castle, she is held captive in the name of retribution. But The Wolf of Kisimul Castle soon learns Mairi is not a docile pawn in this game of war between neighboring
Scots. Nor will she be frightened into walking down the aisle to wed the fierce Highland chief.
Alec MacNeil is set on revenge. When he finds his enemy dead, he takes his wife to replace the one that was murdered. An eye for an eye. A bride for a bride. But Mairi is more tiger than kitten and refuses to bend to his will. Set stubbornly against one another, the passion that flares between them threatens to tear Alec’s strategy to shreds.

EXCERPT:

He crossed to the window without a word and looked out at the courtyard, his eyes scanning beyond.

“Where is everyone?” he asked. “At the chapel, I assume,” she said, stepping closer. He probably smelled of sweat or ale. She inhaled. Nay. She smelled pine and the sea and fresh air on him.

He turned, and she rubbed her nose to hide the action of sniffing him. His gaze dropped to her as if her nearness surprised him. “We will go,” he said.

Mairi sighed. “I won’t have Geoff wondering if I would have failed his test, so go ahead.” She let her eyes flutter shut and waited. “Go ahead?” he repeated, and she blinked open.

“Aye,” she said, starting to feel foolish. “Kiss me, if ye’re going to. Otherwise take me to the chapel.”

The only change in the man’s devilishly handsome face was a slight rise in his brows, his clear blue-gray eyes widening the smallest amount. Those damnably tempting lips opened and closed, and his gaze drifted to the shut door before returning to her. He stared at her, as if he were delving into her thoughts. The idea shook Mairi, and she frowned.

“Well, if ye’re not—”

The man wrapped his hand around her arm, slowly reeling her in with constant, gentle pressure until she had to tip her head back to see his face. He radiated authority and determination, as if he could order the mountains to move, yet chose to hold her instead. Her heart hammered in her chest as he set his hand on her cheek. “A kiss, and then we go,” he murmured, moving his thumb across her jaw.

She had time for only a quick inhale as he descended. Mairi had expected a bruising press of his mouth like Geoff had given her when he’d asked her to wed. But this man’s kiss was gentle and warm. With slight pressure, he tipped her head to seal their lips together, moving against her as if tasting an aged whisky. Heat flowed down through
Mairi, wiping away all rational thought. Her knees numbed, but the man seemed to accept her weight easily as he held her against his hard body. His height made him loom over her, but Mairi felt safely surrounded by power instead of fearful. Her fingers reached behind his head to feather through his wavy hair. They were still woven in the dark mass when he gently pulled back, ending the most sensuous kiss Mairi had ever experienced. What bloody foolishness was Geoff thinking? Her traitorous body begged for more, but she stepped back, hands to her flushed skin above her low neckline. The man adjusted himself through his kilt, proving that he too had been affected by the kiss.

“Who are ye?” she asked.

Crescent Calling by Axelle Chandler

Crescent Calling
Axelle Chandler
(The Crescent Witch Chronicles #1)

Publication date: August 9th 2017
Genres: Adult, Urban Fantasy
Skye Williams is an ordinary woman, living an ordinary life.
Or so she thought.
When she receives news of her estranged mother’s death, she must go to Ireland to claim her inheritance, but when she arrives in the tiny village of Derrydun, she isn’t prepared for what she finds nestled amongst the rolling hills of the Emerald Isle.
Lumped with a funeral, her mother’s crystal shop, a moody goth girl for an employee, and a crumbling cottage with horrible floral curtains, selling up and getting out sounds like a great plan, but everything and everyone seems determined to keep her from going home.
Skye doesn’t want any part of her mother’s life or the people of Derrydun until she sees the hot Irishman she’s been crushing on turn into a fox.
More absurdly, he tells her her dead mother was a witch who battled evil fairies, there’s magical trees growing in the centre of the village, there’s a parallel universe where the fair folk live, and she’s meant to be the last defense of the magical peoples of Ireland.
Turns out Skye Williams was never an ordinary woman. Not by a long shot.
She’s the last Crescent Witch and has a destiny to fulfil.
Whether she likes it or not.
The Crescent Witch Chronicles is a series stuffed full of Irish charm, myth and mayhem. Come on an adventure fraught with danger and forbidden romance…and the ultimate battle to save magic before it’s gone forever.

EXCERPT:

That night, as Buddy kept me company, I fell asleep to the sound of wind howling through the trees outside. Plagued with dreams of wolves, I tossed and turned until I slipped into a deep slumber.

When dawn finally broke, I was covered in a thin sheen of sweat, and my head was stuffed with cotton wool. I’d slept but not really. A heavy burden was over my heart, and my body had become twisted in the quilt, my feet trapped.

Ugh, I was all hot and sticky. I kicked, trying to shift the uncomfortable weight and turned over, but it didn’t budge. Lifting my head, my eyes cracked open, sleep still clogging my head. That was when I saw a lump at the end of the bed. A very large, man-shaped lump.

Now completely awake, I screamed, scrambling up the bed. It was Boone. A very naked Boone.

He started, his head shooting up, and when he saw me, he rolled and fell off the end of the bed, hitting the floor with a thud. Scrambling to his feet, his face turned a deep shade of crimson.

“Oh, shit,” he cursed, covering his junk with his hands. “Oh, cac.”

Cac?” I yelled. “I’ll give you bloody Irish cac!

Grabbing the lamp on the bedside table, I pushed up onto my knees and swung it with all my might. The plug popped out of the wall, and the shade barely missed Boone’s face, but the cord came around and whipped him directly on his bare ass.

He howled in pain and retreated across the room.

Pervert!” I shrieked.

“Let me explain,” he said, holding up his hands and leaving nothing to the imagination.

“Explain? What’s there to explain?” I shouted, trying not to look at his you-know-what. “You were asleep on the end of my bed…naked!” I swung the lamp at him again, barely missing his head.

“You’re still standing there. I can see your meat and two veg!

“Oh, cac,” he said again. “I didn’t mean for you to find out this way…”

“Find out what? That you’re a pervert, who sneaks into women’s homes butt naked?”

Dragon Rebel by Ophelia Bell

Dragon Rebel
Ophelia Bell
(Immortal Dragons, #4)

Publication date: August 1st 2017
Genres: Adult, Paranormal, Romance
If Assana looked up the word “nymphomaniac” in the dictionary, she might expect to find her own image in place of the definition, especially after meeting the immortal red dragon, Gavra. The timing couldn’t be worse for her to discover the mate that Fate intended—the one she’d be willing to let go of her tightly bound hold on her deepest sexual desires for—the one who literally drives her mad with lust. Now that she needs her sanity more than anything to regain control of her race’s home from her own insane mother, she’s faced with the inconvenient desire to lose control and be that primal nymph she keeps locked inside.
Thank Gaia for Silas. The handsome young ursa male is blessed with magic that can calm the lust-filled madness threatening to consume Assana’s mind. She needs him more than ever now that she has no choice but to spend her days in close proximity to the dragon she desires more than anything… yet doesn’t dare touch lest she give in to that ancient, primal need all nymphaea are born with.
For red dragon Gavra, he can only put off having the beautiful nymph maiden for so long, or the ursa male who Fate has promised him. Once Assana’s crazy mother is out of the way, nothing will stop Gavra from claiming and marking them both as his.
EXCERPT:

“Well that was fun.”

Gavra spun around at the sound of the deep, familiar voice that had so recently been speaking inside his head. His brother stood in the center of his room, his arms crossed and a grim smile on his face.

“Aodh,” he said, unable to mask the utter relief he felt at seeing his white-haired brother whole and in the flesh. He pulled the other man into a fierce embrace that was returned in kind, releasing him when Aodh stiffened.

Gavra looked back in the direction of his brother’s gaze and saw Vrishti standing with an excited look about to breach the barrier into his room.

“No!” Aodh said. “Please stay where you are, love.”

“She wants to see you,” Gavra said. “Surely you won’t deny her a proper greeting.”

Aodh shook his head. “A proper greeting? She’s not ready, brother. Perhaps it’s fine for you and Silas to tangle before you’ve marked him. We can’t risk her reputation while she’s still learning about her kind.” Turning to Vrishti, he said, “After we’ve settled these issues with the Haven, love. I promise you no prison can keep me from you then.”

Vrishti dropped the hand she had been about to push past the barrier and nodded. Her eyes grew glassy and she took a shaky breath. “I’ll be ready for you, I promise,” she said. “I can’t stand to see you trapped like this… I’m sorry. Be safe. Keep him safe…” She directed the last comment to Gavra and Assana, who both nodded.

Gavra gave Assana a perplexed look. “Why didn’t you drift into the room with him?”

Assana carefully avoided his gaze as she hugged Vrishti farewell and watched the other female go, then she glanced at Silas, a look of pure gratitude on her lovely face. The big ursa male moved closer to her, wrapped an arm around her and held her. Gavra’s chest felt leaden at the way the pair looked at each other – like they belonged in each other’s arms. They were kindred elements, both Gaia’s children, and made sense together more than Gavra himself made sense with either of them. The way he and Silas crashed together with such fiery, explosive force felt right to him, but it was not easy, or pretty – it was passionate, volatile, and destructive.

“He calms my primal spirit,” Assana said softly. “I’m afraid to come closer to you because you only make the madness claw at my mind more. I allowed Aodh to take control of his own drift once he promised to go where I asked. I couldn’t be in the same room with you for fear of losing control. I’m sorry, Gavra… I can’t let myself lose control, not when my entire home, my family’s well being is at stake. Please understand.”

He wanted to roar in protest, to breathe flames at the barrier and pull her inside, show her how right it would be to let go and be her true self – the wild nymph he sensed glimmers of beneath the surface whenever their eyes met. The insatiable creature who haunted his dreams, responding to his heat so perfectly.

Aodh’s hand rested on his shoulder and gave him a comforting squeeze.

Gavra swallowed the molten lump in his throat and nodded. Finding his voice, he said, “I want you wild, Assana. The first time I’m inside you, you can be damn sure control will be the last thing on anyone’s minds.”

Silas tightened his hold on Assana protectively, though his aura flared bright red in response to Gavra’s promise. She closed her eyes and took a long, slow breath as though fortifying herself before opening her eyes.

Her hypnotic, whirlpool gaze met his through the barrier. “I want that, too. To share my primal essence with you both, to taste yours when we’re thrice melded and feel your heat deep inside my mind. To feel you etch your mark on my skin. Gaia save me, I would take that now, but I can’t risk losing myself to that need. There is too much at stake. Please understand… I need Silas to keep my own nymphaea madness in check, but I promise you the first time you’re inside me will be the first time my quim is filled by any male’s seed.”

Gavra groaned at the promise, forcing himself to pull his gaze away from her or else risk burning down the entire Sanctuary to get to her.

“It looks like Silas is going to have his hands full sating us both separately then,” he said, staring heatedly at the big ursa male. “Can you handle that?”

Silas gave him a lazy smile. “I welcome it.”

Shadow Fire Alternate Ending #1

When I first started writing Shadow Fire it was a Choose Your Fate book. Similar to the Choose Your Own Adventure books I read as a child, but a more grownup version. As it turned out, publishers weren't interested in this type of book for young adults, and I scrapped the idea. But the alternate endings still exist on my hard drive. Most were rather gruesome, some bittersweet. This is the bad ending for the first choice the reader made in Shadow Fire. Because it was never published, it never went through an editing stage, so this is from my final draft:

There’s nothing I can do right now. The bandit’s blade digs into my neck, and I can feel the trickles of blood oozing from the wounds. I know I’ll never reach the dagger sheathed on my thigh without alerting him. Perhaps I’ll have a chance to escape later if I bide my time now. He drags me back quickly, to the back of the merchant caravan. Though I dig my heels into the ground it does little to slow our backwards progress. Zane, Lukas, and Daren are busy fighting off the remaining bandits. When the brigand holding me reaches the corral where the merchants’ horses are tied, he releases me for a quick second to slice through the reins of the nearest horse. I wasn’t expecting him to let go, and I fall hard on my backside before trying to scramble to my feet. A sharp pain sears through my head and everything goes black.
The first thing I notice when I begin to wake is that my head throbs in time with my heartbeat. As my mind becomes more aware, an awful stench assaults my nose. I’ve never smelled anything so repulsive in all my life. When I try to move my hand to cover my nose, I realize my wrists are shackled together in iron manacles. My eyes fly open, and as I take in my surroundings, my heart plummets like a stone falling over a cliff. I’m lying on my side staring at the bars of my prison cell. Not only are my hands shackled but my ankles are as well. The stone floor is damp and covered in what I can only assume is human refuse. My eyes water from the horrendous stench. I blink, swallow hard, trying to remain composed. Panic will not help. A rat skitters across the floor in my field of vision, and it takes everything in my power to swallow the scream that rises to my throat. Carefully I sit up to get a better look around. My cell is only one of many, the others also filled with women. I must be in the bandits’ stronghold.
“Where are we?” I call out softly to the woman in the cell beside mine. The only acknowledgment I receive is her dead, blank stare.
“Well, my pretty, little slave, I see you’re finally awake.” A voice booms from the hall in front of my cell. The women in the surrounding cells shudder and cringe at the voice. Shakily, I try to rise to face the man leaning against the bars of my prison. My legs give out, and I fall back to the floor in a heap before finally pushing myself to my feet. “You definitely have spirit,” he says as I stand and glare at him.
He opens the cell door and grabs me by the hair, forcing me back to my knees. As he holds my hair up another bandit enters and places a leather collar around my neck before quickly departing. My captor pulls me back to my feet, this time by the thick metal chain attached to the collar at my neck.
“Come, slave. I already have a buyer interested in you. He came for the head of a bounty I killed, but became interested in you when I told him the man was trying to rescue you.” As he drags me down the hall, my mind screams in protest. A man tried to rescue me. It could only be Zane. Then that would mean…
Tears streak down my face as I realize that Zane is dead, killed in an attempt to rescue me from these filthy bandits. I stumble and fall to my knees, but my captor refuses to slow. Unable to stand again, I’m forced to crawl quickly behind the horrible man as he yanks on the collar choking me. We arrive at a large wooden door, and the bandit hauls me to my feet before opening it.
“Come, little one. You should be honored that such a powerful man is interested in you,” he says as he leads me into the brightly lit room. “Here’s the girl that the bounty was trying to rescue.” As my eyes adjust to the brightness of the room, I notice a man sitting at a table near the wall.
“Leave us,” the new man orders in a brusque tone. My captor immediately steps outside and closes the door behind him. For some reason his quick acquiescence makes me fear the man before me even more. “Come, sit.” He motions to the chair beside him.
Never taking my eyes from the man, I approach the table, the short chain between the shackles on my ankles making walking difficult. I ease my battered body onto the hard, wooden chair. Biting the inside of my lip, I raise my eyes to my new captor. The man is handsome, with long, flowing, brown hair pooling around his waist. His eyes are an intense shade of dark red…just like Zane’s.
“So, you’re the one my foolish son thought dear enough to take on an entire bandit stronghold. I’m sorry to say that it didn’t work out for him, my dear.” Fresh tears form and run down my face, warming my chilled cheeks. “Oh don’t cry, precious. I’ll take good care of you in my son’s place.” He reaches out and lightly caresses my hair, and I cringe away in revulsion. “You will come to respect me soon enough, my little slave. There will come a time when you will beg your master to touch you.”
He rises and moves behind me. It takes everything in my power to allow him to leave my line of sight. When his hands touch my shoulders, I steel my nerves to keep from flinching since he seems to enjoy my distress.
“Such a strong will you have,” he purrs the words in my ear. “I will thoroughly enjoy breaking it.” His maniacal laughter echoes throughout the room as he crosses back to his chair. “I have a gift for you. We will hang it on the wall in your room to commemorate your new life with me.” He pushes a burlap sack across the table until it’s in front of me. “Come, my dear, open your present.”
With trembling fingers, I untie the string holding the sack closed. Once the string is released, the sack falls open. Bile rushes from my stomach to my throat. Leaning over, I vomit on the floor at my side. Horrible tremors wrack my body. My stomach continues retching uncontrollably. I shut my eyes to block out the hideous sight before me, but the image is seared into my brain and there is no escape. My new master cackles gleefully at my reaction to his ‘gift’. I open my eyes again and find myself staring in horror at the bundle on the table. Zane’s garnet eyes stare back sightlessly from his decapitated head. Something in my mind breaks, and I fall into blissful unconsciousness, my master’s laughter echoing in my ears.

Can Emme get over her insecurities and make her relationship work? Life sure is complicated when you're dating the it guy.

Excerpt

The next day, I went to the newspaper office to drop off my story. I hoped I wouldn’t run into Lauren, Brendon’s perfect ex, but she was there with her feet up on her desk, talking on the phone. She put up her finger to signal me to wait. There was no place to sit so I stared at the posters on the wall. Lauren was wearing a blue zip-up sweatshirt and sweatpants. Her shiny hair was pulled back in a ponytail (a bouncy one of course), which showed off her diamond earrings. She had some pearly lavender lipstick on, the kind that makes most people look like a corpse, but on her it showed off her flawless complexion and rosy cheeks. Plus, she didn’t need any other makeup with those gray eyes.

I had spent forty-five minutes on my hair and makeup and wore a pair of designer jeans I got on sale and a cute fitted sweater I borrowed from Margaux, yet Lauren was hotter in her sweats and ponytail with hardly any makeup on.

“Sorry, talking to the assistant editor at the Post,” she said. Stupid namedropper—wait the Post? Where I had gotten the internship—the same one taken away from me? “I’m interning there,” she said.

“That’s nice.” Get me out of here. She got my position?

“This is my second time there. I started in the summer, but they wanted me to stay on for the fall. So what can I do for you?” she asked as I tried to keep myself from howling over the unfairness of the universe.

“Here’s the Halloween party story. I e-mailed it to the submission address, but Brendon said you also needed a hard copy.”

“Oh, I thought Brendon was going to write this,” she said.

“He asked me to…is it okay?”

“I guess.” She dropped it in a box and began typing furiously on her laptop.

“You’re welcome.” I hated her. I can’t believe she got my internship at the Post and moved in on my ex-boyfriend. I could just imagine her and Brendon’s life together—it would be like a glossy, preppy perfume ad. Their house would be in a magazine where they’d praise her for her good taste. Then their two perfect children Brendon Jr. and Lily (or whatever rich people name their daughters) would be dressed in perfect little outfits that matched the furniture. Meanwhile, I’d still be trying to work at the Post and wearing designer clothes from the final markdown sale rack at some bargain-basement store.

Excerpt

Green. That was the first sign that Keiron was somewhere and somewhen else. The drab grays of home were gone, replaced by a vibrant, lush promise of springtime. Everything in his vision was on the cusp of exploding into action as the days grew longer, warmer, and alive. With exaggerated delicacy, he moved his head slowly, like it was full of water because the fall had been long and his push backward into the light of days left him sore and muzzy. Whatever he’d expected, it hadn’t been a body filled with dull aches and the promise of bruises to come.
“Maybe I’ll just sit here until my head is clear.” The wind freshened with a promise of rain, squelching the idea of inactivity. In stages, he dragged himself painfully upright, wondering for the first time why he hadn’t merely glided all the way to his landing. As he rose, his arms began to pinwheel in a wild gyration, ending only when he pitched face forward into the moist grass with an inelegant thud.
The only time he’d ever fallen in his entire life had been when he was a child, before he learned how to open—
His wings were gone. A searing jolt of fear raged through him, spiking into every corner of his body and ending in the most delicate place it could.
            His mind.
He shook, breath coming in ragged gasps while reaching desperately over each shoulder to find nothing but empty air. He was stripped, defenseless, and maimed.
He was broken. He was ordinary.
And ordinary was not good enough to save her.
Only twice in his life had stories of the wingless come to him; in each case, the piteous creature had been a criminal who the council banished for a shadowy reason so heinous it was kept from the children. But this—his hands waved in a weak rhythm as if they too could not believe his condition. He was, what, exactly? Wingless? No, that could not be, as he’d committed no crime. Garrick, his brother and apparent rival, had pushed him from House Windhook. Keiron’s thoughts and intentions were far from criminal, and could be no reason for banishment, let alone stealing his wings.
Still, he sat, pained with the understanding that this was truly a one-way trip. His cause had gone from noble to permanent, and he knew that the vistas of House Windhook were now little more than a memory.
He would save her or die. It was simple as that.
