Excerpt

Brenda jerked the door open as the shot rang out. She felt something sharp and hot against her shin as she kicked herself away from the car. She tumbled onto the pavement before hitting the shoulder, the gravel feeling like a million razors slicing through her flesh. She heard her own voice as if it was disembodied, screaming as she forced herself to roll across the sharp gravel before plummeting down the incline, compelling herself to continue rolling even as she realized she’d been shot in the leg.

She heard the car’s brakes slamming, the tires squealing as the man struggled to bring the car to a stop. At seventy miles an hour, it should have taken the car further from her even as she rushed to escape. But when she came to her feet and looked back at the road, she estimated he was about three hundred feet further down the road—not far enough.

She ran toward the tree line, which now appeared too far away. As a second shot rang out, she knew his sights were set on her back, and she struggled to run straight, fighting the impulse to run opposite of him. It kept her profile smaller but when he shot a third and then fourth time, she could almost feel the bullets whizzing past her.

The third and fourth shots sounded increasingly louder and she knew he was running after her. Her breath was loud and labored, her blood pounding in her temples. Even as she drew closer to the shadows of the trees, she could feel herself slowing down. The adrenaline that propelled her down the slope and to her feet was fighting against the pain in her leg.

She could feel the blood oozing down her shin and pooling in her shoe, causing her to slip and slide along grass already slick with dew. Another shot rang out, whizzing so close to her hair that she thought it had passed through it.

She threw herself into the shadows, pushing herself beyond her leg’s endurance to keep going, to get into the pine forest, weaving and bobbing forward and eastward, away from the car, away from the interstate. Hopefully, away from him.

She wanted to stop; she wanted to pull some article of clothing off herself and wrap it around her shin to keep the blood in, to keep the flesh together, but she didn’t dare hesitate. She heard the branches cracking behind her; he was there and he was closing on her. Even as she propelled herself forward, she knew all he had to do was follow the movement of the branches ahead of him to know exactly where she was.

Jennifer Domenico
Jennifer Domenico started writing as a five-year old child in the back of her mother’s bible in church. It was a way to keep the fidgety child quiet but even then she took simple stories and twisted them into even more imaginative tales. As she grew, the stories grew with her and she filled notebook after notebook with her musings.

As an adult, she knew she wanted to be a writer but she lacked the attention span and inspiration required to produce a full length story. Eventually she put away her notebooks and turned her attention to the business world where she toiled away for many years.

She stopped reading fiction, stopped entertaining her outlandish imagination, and stopped dreaming of being a writer. Until one day, many months ago she went to sleep and a beautiful love story played out in her dreams.

When she awoke she felt compelled to write it down. And she wrote and she wrote, for days and days she wrote. The result is part one of Enzo and Ava’s story. Turn Towards the Sun is her first, but certainly not her last, novel.

Ms. Domenico lives in Phoenix, Arizona with her very Italian husband, a dog that adores her, two cats that tolerate her, and wicked sweet tooth. She is currently working on part two in the series.

With the family gym on the line, there’s only one way for Kelly to make everything right. He agrees to fight for the Albanian mob in an underground bare-knuckle fighting tournament.

My Review: I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review

In Kelly's Corner is a romantic suspense with a strong (yet vulnerable) female lead and a very alpha male. This is a fast-paced story with mystery and twists that add to the fun. If you like strong alpha males who care about family then I think you'll like this series about the Connolly brothers.

Bee is a successful internet entrepreneur with a business that has taken off into the stratosphere. She is smart, sassy, and sweet all rolled up into one independent girl. After losing her mother and brother she laments her virtual estrangement from her brother's best friend, Kelly. When a stalker appears in her life, she runs to Kelly for help. Bee has been attracted to Kelly for a long time and longs to be with him.

Kelly is an ex-marine who doesn't like to be second-guessed or disobeyed. He seems to think nothing of throwing Bee over his shoulder and walking off with her. Kelly is also attracted to Bee, but thinks it's wrong to go after his dead best friend's sister. Silly man with his chivalrous notions. I loved that Kelly is so committed to his family, including his screwed up dad.

The story is told from Bee's first person view and also Kelly's third person view. I liked the different view points but found the shift from first to third person a bit awkward. There are so many interesting characters in this novel. I loved Kelly's brothers Finn and Jack. The ending was nice, though I think Bee was a bit too quick to forgive Kelly. She should have made him stew for a while... he deserved it.

Feature Follow Blog Hop

The Feature & Follow is hosted by TWO hosts, Parajunkee of Parajunkee’s View and Alison of Alison Can Read. Each host will have their own Feature Blog and this way it’ll allow us to show off more new blogs!
How does this work? The goal is to increase blog followers and make friends. First you leave your name here on this post, (using the linky tools — keep scrolling!) then you create a post on your own blog that links back to this post (easiest way is to just grab the code at the end of the Linky and put it in your post) and then you visit as many blogs as you can and tell them “hi” in their comments (on the post that has the #FF image). You follow them, they follow you. Win. Win. Just make sure to follow back if someone follows you!

Wow it's been a while since I've had the time to participate in a Feature Follow! This is a great week to start up again since I love, love, love pictures! Here are a few random shots...

This is my car, my baby. He's a Camaro 45th Anniversary Edition named Sesshomaru. That's not weird right??

This is my house in San Antonio. Notice the obligatory Texas pickup truck dwarfing poor Sesshomaru.

This is the family being mauled by lemurs.

This was the best family vacation ever! Hawaii... and I went with my in-laws. They don't ride horses...

I can't wait to hop around and see everyone's pictures!!

Melodramatic Musings - Why are Reviews Becoming so Hard to Come by?

I started my review blog Once Upon a YA Book almost one year ago. In that year, I've posted 194 reviews to Goodreads. That's close to four books a week. Crazy, right? That doesn't include the books I decided not to review for a variety of reasons, mostly DNF. My backlog is still astronomical even though I had to stop taking review requests. I received so many each day, it was absurd.

My debut novel was released 2/25/14 and so far getting people to review the book has been a climb up a treacherous slope. I knew it would be difficult since my book wasn't featured as an ARC. I had to wait until after publication to ask for reviews. But I didn't think it would be this hard.

Ahh, cute puppy pictures always make me feel better.
This is my papillon, Kilala, Lala for short.

Okay on with the post.

First and foremost, the number one reason reviews are hard to come by... The market is saturated, soaked, bloated. There is an endless supply of reading material out there. Reviewers are inundated with requests. Even the reviewers who don't accept Indie requests have an overflowing inbox. Reviewers can by picky. They probably won't accept a review request from an author with two Amazon reviews, even if they're glowing. I usually read the first few pages before deciding on a review request, but I'm not sure if most reviewers even bother. With the number of requests and the availability on Edelweiss and Netgalley, reviewers aren't hurting for reading material.

I spent hours sending out personalized review requests to blogs, people, writers I've worked with in the past. Two have accepted. I never received a response from anyone else. Though it can be time consuming, I always reply to review requests (there are some I ignore, but I have valid reasons for doing so). Spotlights, guest posts, and interviews - no problem booking those. But ask for a review and you'll probably be met with stony silence. Forget "Last Call", all bartenders need to yell is "Debut author in need of reviews" and the bar will be empty within seconds flat.

I host for quite a few blog tour companies. Just in the last few months, I've received lots of emails from hosts trying to fill up the blog tours. It just seems like there are fewer people out there lately wanting to review, even for a blog tour. I wish I could compare the number of tours last year with the tours this year, but I didn't keep any of the data. So all I can say is host incentives are increasing and tour companies are sometimes reduced to begging for help with tours. So if you think you'll get a ton of reviews by booking a blog tour, realize that might not be the case.

Reviews can be time consuming. A thoughtful 500 word review doesn't write itself. Sure, it's easy when you love the book and want to scream it from the rooftops. But how many books actually fall in this category? Not many for me at least. Most books I read fall into the 2-4 star Goodreads range. It can be a challenge writing a review for a 3 star book, and I don't even want to write a review for a 2 star book. My reviews tend to be positive. I focus on what I liked more than what I didn't. Writing reviews can be exhausting mentally.

So what can we do as writers? Is it all hopeless? Should we just give up? Admit we're doomed to languish in Kindle obscurity?

No. Try harder. Publish more. If a reviewer sees that you have several books out, they are more likely to try one. Why? It shows that you're a serious writer. It shows commitment. Three books with twelve 4 or 5 star reviews among them is more appealing than one book with two 5 star reviews.

Book that blog tour. So you don't get as many reviews as you would like. At least your book is getting out there in spotlights. Write some guest posts. So many book bloggers love receiving a well-written guest post. It brings a new audience to our blog.

Continue to send out your personalized review requests. Don't even bother with a boiler plate email. It seldom works except for the newest reviewers. Target newer review blogs with smaller followings. You want that review posted on Goodreads and Amazon. No one there cares how many blog followers a reviewer has.

Just don't give up.
So, do you have any suggestions? What's worked for you? What didn't?

Coming next week: When reviews turn you from this

Excerpt

The next evening, right after sunset, lounging on golden-weaved pillows in their pastel striped hotel suite, Aaron explained Urvashi’s plans to Michelle.  She reacted as expected – not happy.
“What is she doing now?  Chienne fou.  She will kill us all.”  Despite her ire, Michelle pecked Aaron on the cheek and held his chin, pinning him with her vivid, emerald green gaze.  Her flawless pale skin, elegant, patrician features and golden-blonde hair had never failed to hold his attention, but it was her eyes that always snared him.
“Michelle, you have to trust her.  I trust her.”  He wished he could share his connection to Urvashi with Michelle, the way they used to share everything.
“You are blinded by your bond to her.  For me, is simple.  She does not love you and I do.”
“This has nothing to do with love.  It’s about getting the job done.  You’ve been hot to find Michael Jamison for weeks.  We’ve gotten nowhere until last night.  This is our first lead since he killed that bank teller.”
Although the BBC news declared the woman’s death a cardiac arrest, Urvashi had ferreted out the truth.  The woman had been left in the alley, short a couple pints of blood, with telltale puncture wounds on her neck.  Aaron continually wondered why Jamison murdered the bank teller.  Maybe he simply couldn’t stop feeding until he killed her, an accident of sorts.
Michelle pulled Aaron’s face to her, nose to nose.  “Oui, mon amour, we will find him soon enough.  But I have always worked alone.  I trust no one but you.”
He took her hands, curling his fingers with hers.  Michelle had gone through hell with her master, Julian, decades ago.  The man had fucked her head up royally.
“That was the life Julian taught you.  But it is not our life.  Michelle, I want to live, with you, for real.  No more hiding in nightclubs and back alleys.  We are going to start building a life, connecting with people, trusting people.  We’ll start with Urvashi.  My father said people deserve the benefit of the doubt until they prove otherwise.  Trust is a two-way street.  You have to give to receive.”
“You cannot see her.  She is dangerous to you, like we are dangerous to people.  And you are blind to her as people are blind to us.”
“I know things about her you don’t understand.  She is ancient, older than even she knows.  But beneath all those hundreds of years lies a person, a woman, and she can be trusted.  I believe she is worthy of our trust.”
“How do you know she is a woman?  Is a mask.  She can change shape.  She is not human.  I smell her.  I see her aura.  She is something else.  A fallen angel?  Is très mal.  I have not lived a hundred years by being stupid.  She is dangerous.”
“Okay, even if you’re right, it doesn’t change anything.  I am bound to her.  We have to find a way to make the best of it.”
Urvashi entered Aaron and Michelle’s hotel suite with divinely impeccable timing.
Michelle snarled, “Quand on parle du loup!”  Speak of the devil.
Urvashi held her hands in the air with an exultant grin.  “And here I am.”
“Ladies, can’t we just get along?”  One of these days he’d have a wicked catfight on his hands.  And it’d be ugly.  Inevitable.
“Of course.  I just came to make sure you two were ready for our next big adventure.”  Urvashi’s static powered fingertips traced his shoulder.  “I hope you appreciate how much trouble you have been.  Beyond her.”  Urvashi pointed towards Michelle, as if it was so horrible to tolerate her presence.  Aaron’s autonomy with Michelle had been granted by Urvashi, begrudgingly, at his steadfast insistence.
The severity of his master’s eyes spoke to serious business.  “I called in favors on this one.  Albanians are not easy to deal with.  But I happen to know people who spent some time in Kosovo.  They have dealt with the KLA and the mafia families before.”
“Friends in low places?”
“Unfortunately, yes.  We meet them tomorrow night.  Bring the katanas.”
“What good are swords against guns?”
“Just bring them.”

My Review: I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review

Since this book is rather different than what I normally review, I wanted to start with a warning. This novel series features graphic violence, graphic sex, graphic everything. Don't believe me? Read the first line in The Nightlife London and you'll understand. The Nightlife London is gritty and raw, sexy and witty. I think fans of Laurell K. Hamilton will really enjoy this series.

In this latest installment, Aaron and Michelle are in London, hunting for Michael Jamison. The story starts with a bang (of sorts) as the main characters fish out information regarding their prey. I enjoyed the hunt quite a bit. Add in more excitement when Russian werewolves, adept at killing vampires join the fray.

I love the characters in this series. I think 'awesome' describes Michelle quite well. Aaron's personality keeps me chuckling. Anywhere these two go there's bound to be lots of action. This is a very fast-paced, action-packed read. I picked up the book for a short break and was a third of the way through before I realized my break was running a tad long. The scenes and dialogue blend seamlessly together.

If you like urban fantasy with a kickass heroine, lots of action, blood & gore, and loads of sexy scenes—then this is the series for you. However, I only recommend this one to those ages 18+ due to explicit content. But, oh, what fun explicit content it is!

New Release Spotlight: To Catch a Creeper by Ellie Campbell

To Catch a Creeper
A Crouch End Confidential Mystery

Ellie Campbell

Chicklit Mystery
March 24, 2014

Amazon US * Amazon UK

Cathy is riding high in her brand-new job at a (surprisingly bitchy) top London advertising agency working with best friend Rosa. But when Rosa’s pregnancy goes amiss and enemies sabotage her new career, she finds herself leading a chaotic double life of lies and deception, hiding a shameful secret from all, especially husband Declan who appears in the throes of a nervous breakdown.

Meanwhile she’s agreed to unmask the notorious Crouch End Creeper, a burglar terrorizing their neighbourhood. Little does she know that her meddling, assisted by fellow mothers (the Wednesday Once Weeklies) and the Neighbourhood Watch, will lead their dangerous opponent to murder. And that it's not only the tall elegant transvestite who is placing herself at risk...

Excerpt

‘It must have been horrendously frightening, Cathy,’ Holly Willoughby’s sparkling white teeth are shining directly into my eyes causing me to spontaneously blink, ‘finding yourself stalked and then almost strangled to death.’
‘Oh yes,’ I nod and refill my water glass. ‘Terrifying.’
Although, I squirm as three huge cameras circle closer like a cackle of hyenas moving in for the kill, nowhere near as terrifying as being on live TV. All through the interview I keep getting these uncanny impulses to indulge in a touch of Tourette’s, spouting obscenities while intermittently flashing a nipple.
‘And then not only did you capture the culprit but you managed to turn the situation round and through it launched the most talked about advertising campaign this decade.’
‘Not just me...’ I grin bashfully as Camera One’s red light gives a little wink in my direction.          ‘So as a woman who’s spent the last eight years as a mother and housewife,’ Holly continues brightly, ‘how are you finding it being back out in the workplace?’
How am I finding it? Fantastic. Sodding-bloody-fantastic, I want to reply but for some reason, ever since the camera did that little wink, my throat simply refuses to co-operate.
‘It’s a...a...’ I cough and reach for the water, ‘case of...’
‘And balancing this brand new exciting career with taking care of two primary-school age children?’ prompts her co-presenter nicely. ‘You must be very organised...’
‘Well, Joseph... I mean Jason... I mean...’
And that’s it. My mouth freezes while I rifle through my memory bank trying to recall his name. Jason or Joseph... But no, it can’t be either. Joseph was the biblical character that this guy portrayed at a West End theatre and Jason...he was the ex-Neighbours actor who also played Joseph as well as dating Kylie Minogue and picking David Guest’s nose on some reality show. So this guy, the one sitting in front of me, all mike-ed up, awaiting an answer while millions look on... God, who is he? Sweat pools under the armpits of my new Vivienne Westwood polka-dot dress with the waist-cinching corset as I scan and rescan his grey speckled hair and cute baby face. ‘The thing is...’
A reassuring hand rests on my arm. For the fifth time this morning, Rosa steps in to save me.       ‘Oh she is, Phillip,’ she laughs lightly. ‘Super-organised, that’s our Cath. Packed lunches prepared night before. Uniforms folded neatly on chairs. Dishwasher and washing machine fully loaded. Plants watered. Fish fed. Wonderwoman has nothing on her.’
She slaps me on the back, just as I take another gulp of water. Instead of drowning the giant South American toad now living in my larynx, a fountain shoots out from my mouth and nose.
Holly smiles once more as she smoothly links back to the weather, before the cameras wheel away, allowing her to dab at her water-spotted jacket and mercifully ending the second most scary moment of my entire life.

In a recent survey 65% of mothers admitted feeling undervalued, over-criticised and constantly tired.

Cathy is no exception. Her dull, uneventful days as a stay at home, mother of two, are radically transformed however with the arrival of a heavily lipsticked postcard addressed to husband, Declan. Who is the mysterious La La? Could Declan really be having an affair? And is Cathy actually being stalked?

Whatever – it will definitely prove riveting gossip for the Tuesday Twice Monthlies, Cathy’s 'Mothers Restaurant Research’ group where scandal flows as recklessly as the wine. But what starts as a light-hearted investigation with best friend Raz, soon turns into something much more sinister.

With a possible murderer on the scene, a sexy admirer igniting long-forgotten sparks, and all her friends hiding secrets, it’s not only Cathy’s marriage that’s in jeopardy. Add in the scheming antics of Declan’s new assistant, the stress of organising the school Save The Toilet’s dance and the stage is set for a dangerous showdown and some very unsettling, possibly deadly, revelations.
