Review: The Cupcake Witch by Poppy Lawless

The Cupcake Witch

Poppy Lawless

Fantasy Romance Novella
2015

Julie

Buttercream. Vanilla. Fondant. Dark chocolate. Brown sugar. Molasses. Baking has always been my true love, but it wasn’t until my mother’s death, and the unexpected inheritance of Serendipity Gardens, that my bliss called me. Bittersweet. But Serendipity Gardens has more to offer than just a potential shopfront. An unusual recipe box left to me by a distant relative might be the key to unlocking my dreams.

Too bad the most powerful family in Chancellor has plans that could turn those dreams to ruins—literally.

Too bad the son of that powerful family is just the kind of guy I’ve been looking for.

Horatio

I suppose being heir to the Hunter family’s Blushing Grape Winery should make me happy, but nothing could be further from the truth. With my mother gone, my father has taken me under his wing, and I despise everything about the way he does business. Sour grapes, indeed. Instead of raising money for charitable causes, my true passion, I’m chasing my father’s manifest destiny.

Too bad his dream includes paving paradise.

Too bad the property owner is the sweetest woman I’ve ever met.

They say the course of true love never runs smooth.

But that’s nothing a magical cupcake can’t solve.

Review: I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review

A short, sweet review for a short, sweet novella. This book combines two of my favorite things: cupcakes and a dash of magic.

Both Julie and Horatio have been living a life their parent- for Julie her mother and Horatio his father- want for them. Nothing makes me happier than when people shed that and follow their dreams. Both characters are more than likable and together they are really quite sweet,

A very short read-- I read it in about an hour. I enjoyed the shifting POV between Julie and Horatio. Chancellor seemed like an intriguing town. There's a whole series of novellas set there, so if you like this one you have several more to devour.

Review: The Warning by Sophie Hannah - Giveaway

The Warning

Sophie Hannah

Mystery
HarperCollins Witness Impulse
June 30, 2015

Amazon | B&N

Don’t say I didn’t warn you…

When a kindly stranger does Chloe a good deed, she decides she must repay him. But in tracing him, she meets a sympathetic woman named Nadine, who warns Chloe to stay away from the man at all costs. “Give him nothing, tell him nothing, don’t trust him,” she says. “Avoid him like the plague.”

Chloe knows the sensible thing to do: walk away. But her curiosity gets the best of her. What is the truth about the good Samaritan? How dangerous could he be? And can Chloe find the answers without putting herself and her daughter in harm’s way?

A twisting, razor-sharp suspense story that will keep you guessing to the very end, The Warning features an appearance from Simon Waterhouse, next seen in the full-length thriller Woman With a Secret - already hailed as “mesmerizing” (Lisa Gardner) and “unputdownable” (Liane Moriarty).

Review: I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review

The Warning was a suspenseful, page-turning short story. What I found most intriguing were characters Chloe and Tom-- both were so odd and yet seemed to be a perfect match for the other. If you don't believe in love at first sight, then Tom and Chloe's behavior will confound you as it did me.

In fact, the only character with a clear head was Simon Waterhouse, the detective. His deduction skills were like something out of Criminal Minds. Definitely a character I'd want to read more about.

This is a very short story, so not much in the way of character development. But it did have a twist I didn't see coming. Overall, it was a nice diversion on a hot summer day-- about an hour or so on my Kindle.

Book Blitz: Resisting the Bad Boy by Violet Duke - Excerpt & Giveaway

Resisting the Bad Boy
Can't Resist #1

Violet Duke

Contemporary Romance
March 29, 2013

Amazon * B&N * iTunes * Kobo * Google Play

"A heartfelt, fast-paced, and fun read!" -- NYT Bestselling Author Lauren Blakely

The book that started it all. Book #1 of the Nice Girl trilogy, the acclaimed three-book serial that began the New York Times & USA Today bestselling CAN'T RESIST series.

Abby Bartlett is the quintessential nice girl. Between teaching, volunteering, completing her PhD, and helping her best friend raise his daughter, Abby never gets the chance to be anything but nice. That is, until the all-wrong-for-her man she’s only ever known from afar starts daring her to simply take that chance for herself. His sage advice? Try something wild and fast.

Preferably him.

An unbridled, hotshot attorney with a not-so-little black book, Connor Sullivan has earned himself quite the bad boy reputation. But in his defense, he’s a very conscientious one. He knows far too well that sometimes in life, love isn’t enough…or worse, not even a factor at all. To avoid that misery—and repel the drama—Connor always makes his one and only rule crystal clear right from the start. Absolutely nothing more than a month.

Turns out, a whole lot can happen in one month.

Note: This is NOT a standalone. This is the first book in a three-book serial.

This three-book serial is part of the CAN'T RESIST series. Books #1-3 (Abby's story) must be read in order. While Books #4-6 are separate standalones, it is recommended that they be read after the trilogy. Books #1-3 are also available as a bundled boxed set.

THE CAN'T RESIST SERIES:
BOOK 1: Resisting the Bad Boy*
BOOK 2: Falling for the Good Guy*
BOOK 3: Choosing the Right Man*
BOOK 4: Finding the Right Girl
BOOK 5: Keeping the Rebound Fling
BOOK 6: Having the Real Thing

*Also available as a three-book bundle in the Nice Girl trilogy boxed set

PRAISE FOR VIOLET DUKE:

"Emotionally charged with wonderful characters! Violet Duke made me laugh and cry in this incredible romance. One of the best I've read this year!" -- NYT Bestselling Author J.S. Scott

"A sexy, emotional treat!" -- NYT Bestselling Author Lexi Ryan

"A unique series that will take you on a roller coaster of emotions. I couldn't put these books down!" -- NYT Bestselling Author Carly Phillips

Excerpt
He didn’t want Abby to have any illusions about him. “The last woman I dated isn’t taking the end of our one month well. But it is completely over, I assure you. I’m not dating her or anyone else right now, in case you were wondering.”
“I wasn’t. Wondering, that is. I know you wouldn’t be asking me for a month if you were.”
He was utterly curious as to why, how she was so sure of such a thing.
At his questioning look, she shrugged. “You strike me as a monogamish kind of guy. Plus, I don’t believe you’d go through the hassle of enforcing a rule if you weren’t going to be man enough to honor it yourself.”
There was a good chance he was going to start needing this woman as a valium for his soul. She saw a glimmer of good in even his worst qualities, and didn’t hesitate to call him on the rest. But never without recrimination. If it was possible, she seemed to just like him for being him.
“Hey,” she said, concern latent in her voice. “You okay? You looked a little worried there for a second. Is it your case? Did you want to talk about it?”
She had to stop. He couldn’t take much more of her innate niceness; he didn’t deserve it, didn’t have the first clue what to do with it. “Oddly enough, I do want to talk about my case with you. Hell, I want to share my whole day with you. Which is why I need to do this.” So quickly it surprised even him, he swooped onto the couch and lowered his mouth down to hers.
Just one taste.
He just wanted one little taste before his hunger got out of control. Before he started craving things he couldn’t truly have.
Like a nice girl he had no business wanting.
He stopped himself mere seconds before his lips made contact though...shut his eyes and took a steadying breath. Then another. And then finally backed away.
Christ, that was close.
But just when he’d gotten a handle on his roiling emotions, just when he thought he could be the good guy for a change, he felt two gentle hands smooth over the sides of his face.
And he was lost.

Clients with less than honorable intentions sign up just have Lisette at their side. Solution? A make-under. Way under. It works like a charm. None of her male clients show her the least bit of interest. Until… Erik. Erik Gunnarsson is charming, kind, and smart—everything she’s ever looked for. Even though he seems to have a secret and she swore she'd never date a client, Lisette is tempted to shed her disguise—even if it means jeopardizing her career.

Excerpt

This was it, the day she’d waited and worked for over the past years—her degree would be firmly in her hand. Lisette Pannebaker, Master of Business Administration. Her smile even made her eyes scrunch.
Dad’s dress shirt would’ve popped buttons, had he been here to see her.
But it wasn’t just the degree. Chances were that tonight she’d have something else in hand. Or, rather, on her hand. She’d seen the little navy velvet box on Justin’s coffee table—he’d left it in plain sight when she came by to drop off dinner for him last night—and she’d nearly fainted from heart palpitations last week when he’d dragged her past windows sparkling with diamonds and asked whether she thought round cut or brilliant cut had more fire.
Brilliant cut, of course.
Ah, Justin Fox. She sighed for his blond crew cut, his square jaw. Mrs. Justin Fox. It fit. Lisette Pannebaker, student, no more. Now she’d be Mrs. Justin Fox, Master of Business Administration.

Blog Tour: Second Chances 101 by Donna K. Weaver - Review, Trailer & Giveaway

second chances tour

Second Chances 101

Donna K. Weaver

Thirty seven year old Francie Davis, a recent widow and empty nester, gets to attend college at last. She’s sure her luck has changed when she also lands a job on campus that will pay her tuition, as administrative assistant to a history professor. When her handsome new boss yells at her on the first day of work, Francie worries she will never be good enough. For Professor Alex Diederik, life is going downhill fast. Not only is his bitter ex-wife trying to poison their only daughter against him, but now his one place of solace—his work environment—is being complicated by his attractive new administrative assistant. She drives home his feelings of failure as a husband and father, and Alex wonders if hiring her was the right thing to do. Francie will have to put aside her hurt and insecurities or risk her dreams, while Alex must look outside himself if he’s to mend the breach with his daughter. And, perhaps, find someone who can help heal his pain.

My Review: I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review

Second Chances 101 is the fifth book in The Ripple Effect Romance novella series. This is an incredibly fast-paced story. I think I read it in less than an hour. It's a sweet story about two people finding each other after dealing with former bad partners. Francie's spouse died and Alex divorced his shrew of a wife.

There is little romance in this novella. Alex and Francie just agree to start dating and the next thing we know it's several weeks later and the story is over. I would have liked more time to get to know the characters as a couple. We get to know them pretty well as singles, but everything still felt a bit rushed.

I loved Francie's character, she was an amazing woman. After years of mental abuse, it's surprising she was able to turn her life around the way she did. But I think the true star of the story was Alex's daughter, Sam. I think Ms. Weaver could write an entire story devoted to Sam and what happens to her in the future. I really hated Sam's mother. She was a conceited piece of work. The relationship between Francie and Sam is better developed than that between the Francie and Alex.

I enjoyed this sweet story, just wish there was a bit more to it. I wasn't quite ready to part with the characters when the novella ended. Another fun addition to this clean romance novella series.

Blog Tour: Lost and Found by Karey White - Review & Giveaway

Lost and found tour

Lost and Found

by Karey White

Lydia was supposed to have an adventurous and exciting summer. Instead she's done nothing more than read and eat takeout. Now it's time to go home, and what does she have to show for it? A big fat nothing. Unless, of course, her trip to the airport somehow turns into something more than just a flight home. Blake feels like he's been sent on a wild goose chase. While work is piling up back in Denver, he's on the other side of the country, hunting for some mysterious box that his grandfather left him. Well, no more. Nothing inside that box could possibly be more important than the opportunity to make it as the youngest partner at his firm. So he's going home, and that's that. But that's before he discovers his flight has been cancelled. When these two strangers meet at the airport, they make a split-second decision to search for the box together. Maybe with both of them on the hunt, Lydia can have her adventure and Blake can find the box. And maybe, if they’re lucky, they’ll even find some romance.

My Review: I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review

Lost and Found is the third novella in The Ripple Effect Romance Novella Series. I am really enjoying this series. I have never looked forward to getting my oil changed, but with this book in hand I was content to just sit and read. This novella is sweet and whimsical. Only once did I tear up, but I was able to keep them at bay.

Lydia is an elementary school teacher living in the small town of Bridger, CO. Her friend, Cambri, convinces her to live in her empty condo in Charlotte for an exciting, adventurous summer. At summer's end, Lydia realizes that while she excelled at relaxation, she never once did anything new or adventurous. Sitting at the airport she meets handsome Blake who just finished a failed quest to track down a box his grandfather left for him. One cancelled flight and a moment of bravery later and Lydia agrees to help Blake for the next two days.

Blake is a workaholic, eighty hour weeks trying to make partner in a law firm. Stuck in the workaday rut and missing out on the best things in life--friends and family. He decides to help Lydia experience some adventure while they search. One activity sounded fantastic, the other terrifying. I loved Blake and Lydia together. They're so different, and yet I got the feeling they'd be great together.

I love the lessons both Blake and Lydia learn during his quest for his grandfather's box. This is just overall such a feel-good story. A little bit of romance, a lot of adventure, and two people who meet by chance.
