Review: Madison's Song by Christine Amsden

Madison's Song

Christine Amsden

Paranormal Romance

Amazon | B&N | Goodreads

Her voice is enchanting; his soul is black...

Madison Carter has been terrified of Scott Lee since the night he saved her from an evil sorcerer – then melted into a man-eating monster before her eyes. The werewolf is a slave to the moon, but Madison's nightmares are not.

Despite her fears, when Madison's brother, Clinton, is bitten by a werewolf, she knows there is only one man who can help. A man who frightens her all the more because even in her nightmares, he also thrills her.

Together for the first time since that terrible night, Scott and Madison drive to Clinton's home only to discover that he's vanished. Frantic now, Madison must overcome her fears and uncover hidden strengths if she hopes to save him. And she's not the only one fighting inner demons. Scott's are literal, and they have him convinced that he will never deserve the woman he loves.

*Stand-alone companion to the Cassie Scot series

Review: I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review

Madison's Song is a standalone companion to the Cassie Scot series, yet I don't think you need to read them first to enjoy this novel. But you'll be missing out if you don't-- they are quite good.

Madison was a character I definitely wanted to know more about while reading the Cassie Scot series. Her magical talent, singing, was one I found especially intriguing. Madison typically came across as meek and soft, but when it really counted, she found her backbone. The romance, or rather lack thereof, between Scott and Madison was tragic. They were both attracted to each other for years but always afraid to connect. He was afraid his wolf would hurt her, and she was afraid of his wolf.

Evil sorcerer Alexander DuPris made an appearance in the story via proxy with an insidious plot involving werewolves. While I enjoyed the story and the interactions between Scott and Madison, I felt that the pacing was a tad too slow for my taste at times, especially at the beginning. The best part- Madison finally embracing the magic within her.

If you like paranormal romance, then this series is really a must read.

Cocktails & Characters with Cecily Magnon, Author of Dark Skies

I'm excited to welcome author Cecily Magnon to the blog today. She is sharing her Cocktail & Characters list for Dark Skies.

Cocktail & Characters for
Dark Skies by Cecily Magnon

Cocktails & Characters (for the secondary characters)
Choose 3 or 4 of your secondary characters tell what their favorite cocktail is and why.

Caleb is Jarron's best friend. His favorite cocktail would have to be a Brain Hemorrhage. He's got uber telekinetic powers and can blow things up with his mind. He finds it funny, that the drink actually looks like a brain.

Anya is the Oracle for the Order of the Anakim. She's fun, bubbly, and a little bit quirky just like her favorite drink, Mimosas made with fresh squeezed orange juice and garnished with strawberries. She loves oranges and uses the left over peels in her potpourri mix and for chocolate dipped orange peels. She doesn't believe in wasting anything.

Gina is Ellie's best friend. Her favorite cocktail is a shot (or  several shots) of B-52. She's a scientist like Ellie and she loves the creamy, rich, pretty, layers that form from the liqueurs. Gina also doesn't mess around and when it's time to have fun, there is nothing like a quick shot to get things started.

Kash is one of the four High Guardians. He's big, strong, and uses Earth Elemental powers. He's broody and serious. Cocktails?! Um, no.  Give him an ice cold beer any day. He's about simplicity and getting the job done. He doesn't have time for cocktails.

Excerpt

The days were melting into each other and Ellie felt like she'd lived a lifetime in just these few weeks she'd been with the Anakim. She'd found out she was descended from angels, she'd met an amazing man, and her friend was going to join the ranks of the Wiccans to help in their fight.

She'd always thought stuff like this only happened in the movies. That nothing like this really existed except in the creative minds of storytellers. But here they were, she and Jarron, driving into the city to pick up Gina and permanently close down her apartment.

Gina had been house sitting for her for the last three weeks, but now that they were both going to be with the Anakim, there was no longer any reason to hold onto it. The apartment had been her place since her mom disappeared, and was where she'd put together a new life for herself. Letting it go was letting go of the past to allow room for a new beginning she was strongly forging with The Order of the Anakim.

It was bittersweet.

She looked at the driver's side of the SUV and studied Jarron's profile -- the chiseled jaw, the pout of his lips, the perfect slope of his nose, and those eyes… He could stare down a demon during battle and, in their private moments, lock onto her gaze, making every fiber of her being melt into goo. He owned her and he didn't even know it. Her heart beat wildly when he caught her staring and threw her one of his half-cocked smiles. That smile was her undoing.

He reached over and grabbed her hand, squeezing it lightly before returning his eyes to the road. "We should be at Gina's in a few minutes." He slowed the car to a stop, waiting for the traffic light to change. "Are you okay?"

Ellie nodded, but she wasn't sure how she was feeling. There was too much going through her mind… some good, some bad. "It's been a lot to take in these last few weeks."

He shifted his hand, twining his fingers with hers as he drove to Ellie's apartment. Jarron pulled into a parking spot at the apartment's lot and turned the engine off. He turned in his seat to face her and kissed the tips of her fingers. He didn't say anything, just looked at her. His eyes were so bright, one green and one blue, drawing her in and ensnaring her within the safety of his heat and light.

"Thank you for coming with me to do this." She had to look down for a moment to release the breath she'd been holding. He did that to her. He made her forget to do even the simplest thing like breathing.

He leaned towards her, his cocky smile returning as he angled for her lips. His heat drew her in, warming her cool energy and making her bubble with pleasure. She surrendered to him, giving back as much as he was taking, deepening their kiss.

Review: A Whole New World by Liz Braswell

A Whole New World
Twisted Tale #1

Liz Braswell

YA Fairy Tale Retelling
Disney Press
Expected Publication: September 1, 2015

Summary from Goodreads

Welcome to a new YA series that reimagines classic Disney stories in surprising new ways. Each book asks the question: What if one key moment from a familiar Disney film was changed? This dark and daring version ofAladdin twists the original story with the question: What if Jafar was the first one to summon the Genie?

When Jafar steals the Genie’s lamp, he uses his first two wishes to become sultan and the most powerful sorcerer in the world. Agrabah lives in fear, waiting for his third and final wish.To stop the power-mad ruler, Aladdin and the deposed Princess Jasmine must unite the people of Agrabah in rebellion. But soon their fight for freedom threatens to tear the kingdom apart in a costly civil war.

What happens next? A Street Rat becomes a leader. A princess becomes a revolutionary. And readers will never look at the story of Aladdin in the same way again.

I received this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review

As a huge Disney and fairy tale fan, I was so excited to get an ARC for A Whole New World. I just love retellings, especially if they have a darker edge to them. It started out like the movie, including lines directly from the script. There was a bit more background on Aladdin, along with a brief section about his childhood. About 20% through, Jafar obtained the lamp instead of Aladdin and everything changed. This was definitely a darker version of the Disney tale.

The plot was fast-paced, great for a YA audience-- I also love that it will appeal to those who might not ordinarily pick up a book since it's based on a movie. Anything to get the younger generation reading. The story was quite interesting-- I enjoyed the rebellion and the band of thieves organized by Aladdin to fight Jafar. The ending was predictable, but that didn't keep me from enjoying it.

I thought Ms. Braswell did a nice job bringing the city of Agrabah to life. The imagery was quite vivid. On the other hand, the characterization was a tad flat. Sometimes the characters came off  two dimensional. It was disappointing because I never really felt attached to any of the characters. The story was more plot-oriented than character-oriented.

Though I have to say that I really liked what the author did with Jasmine's character. She was a much stronger character in this retelling than in the movie. I also liked Aladdin-- but he wasn't as carefree as his character in the movie. He was a bit more serious and more thoughtful. If you are expecting the characters to be like they were in the movie-- well, they aren't. But, I wouldn't really expect them to be. Circumstances can change people. Jafar-- well he was every bit as insanely nefarious as he was in the movie, but we got to see more of it. Iago wasn't present as much nor was Genie. Genie was also more serious. sometimes downtrodden. The comedy was still there at times, but I always heard Robin Williams's voice in my head whenever Genie spoke-- some of the lines in this novel just didn't fit with that crazy voice.

Overall, I enjoyed this retelling. If you liked Aladdin, then I think you'll like this retelling. Nothing extraordinary, but a nice diversion while stuck in an empty house waiting for the carpet to be installed.

Julia is happy with her place in the shifter community as the owner of the famous shifter bar, The Backwater. Only a born shifter mate is good enough for her girls.

Thomas James has his hands full as the shifter king's head of security. He certainly wasn’t looking for a girlfriend during the first annual shifter gathering. He had the king and queen to protect, not skirts to chase.

Prologue- The Plan

Only the birds singing and the leaves ruffling in the breeze shared Emma’s solitude. Reverently, she knelt before the dais constructed for John’s conversion. As part of its preparation, she had taken her daily meditation time at its base.
Closing her eyes and lifting her hands in supplication, she began to pray. “Mother Luperca, I ask that you bless this holy site and give it your approval.”
As she knelt quietly, a soft voice greeted her, “Beloved daughter, I give this site my approval. All is prepared for my newest son, John, to join my family.”
“May I also inquire about my unmated sons?”
“You ask about your sons, but that is not what I feel in your heart. Your true concern is for Thomas, and the plan I have for him.”
“If it pleases you, may I be honored with the knowledge of your plan?”
“Thomas is destined to be Julia’s mate.”
“How may I be of assistance in bringing this mating to fruition?”
“Julia will attend the gathering. Ensure that they meet.”
“Thank you, Mother. How may I be of further service?”
“Your daily worship pleases me well, child. You do enough. Blessed be.”
“Blessed be, Mother.”
Emma completed her prayers and final preparations, excited to tell Isaac her news.

*****
Isaac sat in his office responding to emails from the other pack patriarchs. The gathering was shaping up to be a complete success with every family in the region attending.
“Isaac! Isaac, where are you, cher?” Emma called through the house.
“In here, mon amour.”
“I can’t believe it!” Emma perched in the chair opposite him. “The Goddess has given me the next mate.”
“Who?” he asked excitedly. “Lucas? Marcus?”
Emma leaned toward him and whispered her incredible secret. “Thomas.”
“No! How?”
“Julia.” Emma clapped excitedly. “She’s his mate.”
“I never saw that coming.” Isaac laughed.
“That’s why he isn’t being converted with John.”
Isaac nodded. “He’ll be converted by Julia during the ritual.”
“The Goddess told me Julia will attend the gathering, and our job is to ensure they meet.”
“All right,” Isaac grinned, “that should be easy enough. I’ll keep tabs on Thomas, and you watch Julia. If they don’t meet on their own, one of us will make sure they are introduced.”

On Writing and Researching (Alternate) History by AshleyRose Sullivan

Please join me in welcoming AshleyRose Sullivan to the blog today. Her new YA novel, Silver Tongue, features historical figures set in an alternate world, showcasing just how fragile history can be. I find the plot to be fascinating and asked her to write a bit about her writing and research.

On Writing and Researching (Alternate) History
by AshleyRose Sullivan

Mark Twain said something like, “Get your facts first, then you can distort them as much as you please.” Granted, I’m getting this quote from the notoriously unreliable internet and I doubt that when he (maybe) said these words he was envisioning a woman in the 2010s writing a book about monsters and murder on an alternate version of the Mississippi River but, I mean, I think it still applies.

My second novel, Silver Tongue, began as an idea about history itself–about how fragile it seems. I think we all ask ourselves, when learning about some big event long ago, how it might have been different but for one small thing. In my case, I thought about what might’ve happened if George Washington had drowned in the Delaware River. What would America have looked like twenty or thirty years after the Revolutionary War had been lost? Would America even exist?

This is where research comes in. I had decided George Washington never made it to the other side but I needed to know what actually happened before I went around making a fruit salad of history. I created a long list of questions and set about answering them. I got the bare facts pretty easily. Wikipedia is endlessly useful for things like the dates of famous water crossings. I made a timeline. Silver Tongue takes place in 1839–sixty-three years after The (Failed) Crossing of the Delaware. So, what really happened in those sixty-three years? How about the years that followed? What was just around the bend and might’ve changed if only a little thing here or there had been shifted around? I made a list of interesting events from all those years and let that feed into the atmosphere of the novel. The daguerreotype was introduced in 1839, for instance, but not until after the novel takes place–I bumped it up a little and the ability to see a photograph became part of the story.

The little things, though, that’s where the fun is. What kind of food does Claire eat? What might her best friend, a fashion-forward and wealthy Nouvelle French guy choose to wear to a big outdoor festival? What kind of games might these friends have played together? In other words, what does a regular day look like? For this, there are TONS of history books and blogs out there. There are lengthy posts about smocking fabric in the Regency Era and riding habits throughout history. And books like What Jane Austen Ate and Charles Dickens Knew, by Daniel Pool and Georgette Heyer’s Regency World are phenomenal resources when it comes to the mundane details of life in fancy pants olden days. Of course, when you’re writing an alternate history (with obvious and very dramatic emphasis on the alternate) you take liberties.

Claire exists in a culture that never was–a French/Indian mixed society that only might’ve been. The food she ate would be a blend of both culinary traditions–using ingredients that would’ve been available in the Americas. Substitutions occur. The writer takes over. New recipes are formed along with new history. At this point, you’re molding the world around the story but everything is always informed by the facts. In the end, you simply take charge. Decide what never was, what might’ve been, and let the ghost of our real history haunt the narrative.

One last thing: Read yourself some real, actual books from whatever time/place you’re writing about. People were writing the heck out of some books in old timey days! Netflix was not a thing yet! So get those books. Most of them are free or very cheap what with their authors being super dead. Silver Tongue is heavily informed by Gothic Fiction. I wanted to write a classic, gothic monster story so, in many ways, the best research I did was to just read a lot of classic, gothic monster stories: Frankenstein, The Portrait of Dorian Gray, Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. But it isn’t just a monster story, it’s also an American story. So I read stuff by some big deal Americans: PT Barnum, Mark Twain, Edgar Allen Poe. Unsurprisingly, the works of the time are like treasure chests full of little details. We tend to not think of these books as research because they were written as entertainment but, when you let the fiction of the times sink into your brain, you gain a deeper understanding of the life lived by the characters, the authors, and the regular people of that time.

Amazon | B&N | Kobo

The Colonies lost the Revolutionary War. Now it's 1839 and the North American continent is divided into three territories: New Britannia, Nueva Espana, and Nouvelle France where seventeen-year-old Claire Poissant lives.

Claire has a magical way with words—literally. But a mystical power of persuasion isn't the only thing that makes her different. Half-French and half-Indian, Claire doesn't feel at home in either world. Maybe that's why she's bonded so tightly with her fellow outcasts and best friends: Phileas, a young man whose towering intellect and sexuality have always made him the target of bullies, and Sam, a descendant of George Washington who shares the disgraced general's terrible, secret curse.

But when Sam's family is murdered, these bonds are tested and Claire's special ability is strained to its limits as the three hunt the men responsible into dangerous lands. Along the way they cross paths with P.T. Barnum, William Frankenstein and other characters from both history and fantasy as they learn the hard way that man is often the most horrific monster and that growing up sometimes means learning to let go of the things you hold most dear.
