There is no such thing as a chance meeting.
There’s no room in Avery Nicolis's life for an obsession, yet why else does he stalk Emeline Gamble. Lurking in the shadows, he hungers for a woman he can’t have.

Between the secrets he guards and anarchy roiling in his soul, his only solace are his glimpses of Emeline. He will resist her, protect her from himself, and deny his desire to claim her heart.
Emeline Gamble was a Watcher for the Order—a secret society of women charged with monitoring the offspring of the gods. For months, she observed Avery Nicolis, an elite mercenary, Descendant of Ra, and enemy of the Order. Never knowing he had her in his crosshairs.
Trapped in a lie, Emeline is forced to accept Avery as her bodyguard. Compelled to spend time with him, she learns to care for his tortured soul and see the hero lurking beneath the assassin’s façade.

But every word out of her mouth is a lie. Every action a betrayal. Because to save her family she is forced to accept a new assignment, deliver Avery Nicolis to the Goddess of Chaos, alive...
And do not fall in love with him.

Excerpt

Tires squealed to a stop. It wasn’t long before a pair of combat boots came into her line of sight. Strong hands scooped her up and cradled her against a broad chest encased in a leather coat. Warmth surrounded her, made her want to burrow closer to his heat. Male musk and a hint of something else, something dangerous filled her nostrils.
“I got you.” His voice, guttural and so damn sexy, rumbled through her.
No, he was on the hook. And she had just reeled him in. Her teeth chattered from the cold, his heat, her nerves, the lies.
Avery opened the passenger door and carefully sat her on the leather seat. He hit the overhead lights and gently took her chin between his thumb and forefinger. Calloused fingers brushed her hair away and angled her face toward the light.
“Who did this to you?” Low, his voice promised retribution.
“I didn’t get their number.” She tried to pull away, but he wouldn’t let her. His intensity made her insides squirm.
“I’ll take you to the hospital.”
“No.” She touched his hand. “It’s okay, not as bad as it seems.” She wiggled her jaw and managed only a slight grimace.
He leaned closer. All of him filled her vision. “Are you hurt anywhere else?”
Captured by his heated stare, she shook her head.
“How many were there?” His finger trailed over her cheek and down her neck.
Her thoughts kinda fizzled at his touch. “Who are you?” She remembered to ask again. He gave her a quizzical look, possibly thinking of a lie, she wondered. Her phone rang. Emeline fished it out of her purse and answered without looking. She listened to Zackary pound his chest about hiring a bodyguard for her. He was so proud of himself and expected a reward. The sick hope in his voice almost made her laugh.
“Describe him.” She ordered watching Avery.
“Big guy, bald, pissy attitude. I wanted his brother, but he volunteered,” Zachary said.
“Thanks, Zachary. I owe you one.”
“Really? Well—”
She pressed end. “So you’re my bodyguard?” Perfect. Zachary finally did something right.
“Until I get someone else.” He stepped back and slammed the passenger door closed.
Why accept the job only to get someone else? Nerves made her stomach flutter as she watched him walk around the front of the Range Rover and climb into the driver’s seat. “Do you have a name or shall I make up one?”
“Avery,” he said without looking at her. The car rumbled to a start. Something loud and angry blasted from the speakers. He clicked it off, though she didn’t mind. She preferred Hip-Hop, R&B, and a little bit of Rap. No love songs, though Luther Vandross could put the most celibate body in the mood.
“Emeline,” she offered when he didn’t ask. A giggle threatened to escape, but her bruised ribs would have none of it. ‘Oh what a tangled web we weave, when first we practice to deceive.’ Well we are both, well and truly tangled.
“Something funny?” He pulled into traffic.
He’s observant as a killer or watcher should be. No more lapses. She had to be on guard. Emeline noticed his hands gripping the steering wheel. Big capable hands. “Two men. They wore masks. Tried to steal my purse.” He glanced at the satchel in her lap. Damn, she should’ve insisted they take it.
“Two men, one purse?” His gaze locked on hers. “Why do you need protection, Miss Gamble?”
She hadn’t told him her last name. She could call him on it, but he’d say Zachary told him, so she let it slide. “I don’t. I’m not the one who hired you.”
“Your ex is very concerned about you welfare.”
“You know a lot about me in such a short time, Mr.—what is your last name?” The car rolled to a stop at a red light. His head turned to her and she shifted in her seat to keep an eye on him.
“Nicolis. Your ex filled in a few blank spots before I caught up to you. Anything else you want to know?”
“Yeah. Did he fill you in on where I live too ‘cause we’re real close?”
His eyes narrowed and he glanced at the surrounding area. The light turned green. “Your boss said someone broke into your house. Beat up you and your grandfather. Now you’re attacked on the street. Your enemies, who and where are they?”
She lives in a big house on Riverside Drive. I will take you straight to her. “I don’t have enemies.”
“We all have enemies,” he growled. “Some closer than others.”
Ain’t that the truth.

Guest Post by Tmonique Stephens

The holidays are over and Valentine’s Day approaches! With that in mind, I decided to make of list of “My  Favorite Heartbreakers”. These are men I often think of when I’m in the process of starting a new novel and hero. All of them are stunners! Men you would lose your heart to at first sight, but there is more to them than just good looks. They bring a depth to the characters they portray, character that we, the viewing public, hope they truly have and is not just all make believe.

My tenth Heartbreaker is:
James Dean.
He lived hard and died way to fast but while he was here, every girl’s heart beat a bit faster for this ultimate bad boy.

My ninth Heartbreaker is:
Shemar Moore.
This is one good looking guy. Tan, muscular, and bald…whew! He is a disaster to anything with ovaries. He’s dated a lot of woman and no one has pinned this hunk down. I can’t wait to see the woman that does.

My eighth Heartbreaker is:
Cary Grant.
This is my nod to old Hollywood. I love classic movies. AMC and TMC are two of my favorite channels. Cary Grant was a king of that era. Classic good look, witty, funny, and a joy to watch on film.  To Catch a Thief, Notorious, The Philadelphia Story, and my absolute favorite, An Affair to Remember. Nobody did romance better than Mr. Grant. When he fell in love, we wanted to be the woman who brought him to his knees.

My seventh Heartbreaker is:
Brad Pitt.
He represents the reformed bad boy. Yes, he broke Jennifer’s heart, and received the wrath of the female nation. I firmly believe that if he and Angelina just had a fling, something which was over in a blink, his star would have remained tarnished for a very long time. But Angie is his Soulmate. Their longevity and the children prove that. Seeing him with Angie and their children endears him to me. I know some will disagree, but in my book, Brad will always have heartbreaker status. Plus, the older he gets, the sexier he becomes.

My sixth Heartbreaker is:
Idris Elba.
He is seriously sexy with those dark eyes and salt and pepper beard. Also, that deep, rumbly voice that makes my blood hum. There’s a rumor he may be the new James Bond after Daniel Craig. All I can say is he is sexy enough, alpha enough, and definitely talented enough to breathe new life into the iconic role.

My fifth Heartbreaker is:
Henry Cavill.
He has the most perfect features on any man I have ever seen. His face…his body is Perfection. And he’s Superman. Oh My God, this Welsh actor is the sexiest Superman ever. I’ve had the hots for him when I first spied him on The Tudors. Then he put on the red and blue costume and I was fanning myself during my viewing of Man of Steel.  I can’t wait to see him in Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice in 2016.

My fourth Heartbreaker is:
Jason Momoa:
This guy is sexy personified. I love his long hair, his dangerous eyes and that body! Whoa! I cried when his character Khal Drogo died on Game of Thrones. I wanted more than one season of his sinful body. He is how I picture my twin brothers in my Descendants of Ra series.

Okay, now for my top three! These are the men I’ve secretly labeled ‘the one night stand, the lover, and the husband’. There are the men I would drop panties for in a heartbeat!

My third heartbreaker is:
Channing Tatum. Magic Mike, need I say more. He is my ‘One Night Stand’ because I just want one unforgettable night with him.

My second Heartbreaker is:
Chris Hemsworth. Yes, he is the Sexiest Man Alive. He is my ‘Lover’ because I know I would never get enough of the hotter than hot Aussie. I could star into his dreamy blue eyes all day long. Whew!

And for the finale! My ultimate Heartbreaker, the one I secretly call ‘My Husband’ is:
Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson.
Not only is he a hunk of a sexiness wrapped in caramel skin, not only is he a serious, badass alpha male, but he is funny. I love a man who is not afraid to laugh at himself and make me laugh too. This is a man I would keep for a lifetime.

There you have it!  This is my list of heartbreakers. Who are yours?

Oh, boy, those are some hot men. I think I need a cold shower.
My number one Heartbreaker is Hugh Jackman.
He's not only a great actor, but he can sing and dance. And watching him as Wolverine... I have no words. ~Kimber Leigh

You never know what you’ll find behind the wall of a closed up fireplace. Emma Hopkins is a recently divorced chimney sweep trying to make it in a man’s world. When she wins a huge job in Brooklyn Heights , she finds more than she bargains for; a sexy general contractor who makes her blood boil and an evil spirit who wants her dead. Ryan Atkinson struggles to keep his once-successful general contracting business alive, but horrors in his past have made him a shell of the man he once was. Now he has to face those fears to save Emma from a murderous ghost hell-bent on revenge. Together, Ryan and Emma become ghost hunting partners, hoping to solve the mystery behind Ruby’s letters. What they uncover is a one-hundred year old murder and a budding love that can’t be denied.

My Review: I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review

Ruby's Letters is a fun paranormal romance featuring some feisty ghosts and a century old mystery. Forget skeletons in the closet, main character Emma finds a real skeleton in a brick fireplace. The find sparks a ghost hunt, as well as a second chance at love.

I really liked Emma's relationship with her ex-husband Jared. So many exes are written as embittered, so it was nice to see two who were still supportive and got along. While Emma was a sweet and loving character, I found her to be a tad bland. Romantic interest Ryan was seriously wounded. After surviving a hellacious ordeal, he suffers from panic attacks and nightmares. He definitely brought out the nurturer in Emma.

Emma's employees, Bart and Carlos, were delightfully written. They never failed to make me laugh. I also loved Emma's neighbor Sheila-- she had an eccentric personality that really shone through. The first third of the book was fast-paced and interesting, but things slowed down a bit after that. While I enjoyed the mystery and the character interactions, something was missing. I always felt on the outside looking in, if that makes any sense.

Overall, I enjoyed Ruby's Letters. It's a fun read with a sweet romance between two characters who really need each other. I liked the interaction between the ghosts-- it was interesting to see the world from their points of view.

Unnatural Selection by Victoria Escobar - Excerpt

Unnatural Selection

Victoria Escobar

YA Sci-Fi
Publication Date- November 4th, 2014

I had no name. My assignment was M001/A5. Marpesia Project Test One, Fifth Embryo. I wasn’t considered human. I was a thing to be owned.

I just wanted freedom. I wanted out of the lab and away from being the guinea pig for hundreds of scientists. I wanted to see the world with my eyes not through a computer monitor.

Instead I took two bullets, fell from twenty stories and ran to save my life. From who and what I had no idea and that wasn’t important at the time. Life was important.

I had my freedom but no idea what to do with it. There’s no way to out run the past, and I had to face it. There were too many strings loose and too many people that would be more than happy to lock me in a cage again.

Life was an evolution of natural selection but thanks to human intervention I was Unnatural. I would be deciding who to allow living, and who needed to die.

Excerpt

The entrance was actually a large, oval-ish roundabout that I imagine gave a path to the lost to turn around without entering the school property. A wide–what looked like cast iron–gate blocked the road leading in. Next to the gate a little guard house stood in the same stone as the wall.
A boy–I would say no more than eighteen–stepped out in black cargo shorts and a black button down shirt. There was a tie tucked into the brick colored vest that covered his shirt. When I stopped the car and got a closer look, the school mascot was embroidered on his left breast and he wore a CP embroidered brick band around his right bicep. His blond hair was tousled and on the verge of being considered strawberry blond. His eyes were a gentle and friendly hazel green. I could like him, I decided, and because he felt unthreatening some of my tension eased.
“Campus is closed for the summer,” he began.
“I’ve been invited by Dean Donahue,” I told him before he could go into his obviously prepared speech.
He flashed a beautiful smile. “You must be Charlotte then. Welcome to Saint Rita’s. Give me a second to get the gate open. Go up the road to the next round about, take the second exit, and keep going. You’ll come to a four way stop, just go straight through. The playing fields will be to your right and theadmission building will appear right in front of you, park anywhere in the lot in front.”
“Thank you.”
“No problem.” He went back into the guardhouse and the gate swung silently open.
I waved to him as I pulled off and he waved cheerily back. The gate swung silently shut behind me and I had to take a deep breath. I reached a point of no return.
For the fun of it, and even though the posted speed limit was twenty-five, I did forty down the lane and took the roundabout without slowing down. It was so much fun I pulled a tight U-turn and did it again.
Laughing like a lunatic, I made a final rapid pass around the circle before taking the road as instructed. A pair of motorcycles came up fast behind me, and sensing a game I probably shouldn’t play, I stepped on the gas. I could see the administration building in the distance, far enough away that the cycles could catch up to me.
They did, of course, and were in nearly the same clothes as the gatekeeper except they wore long pants instead of shorts. They parted around me and the one on the driver side tapped the window. When I glanced at him, he gestured for me to slow down.
I did a little, but only enough that the one on the passenger side swooped in front of me and slowed down further. If I hadn’t been cooped up most of my life I might have ceded to his ridiculously slow speed. Instead I picked up pace enough to bump his back tire. He swerved, and since we were still around thirty miles an hour, he went into the ditch. I picked up pace and zoomed off leaving his partner to stop beside him.

Daniel Raye was only sixteen when he walked in on a mob hit against his father. Brutally beaten and left for dead, Daniel awakens in a hospital to find himself blind and with no memory of the hit. Placed in the FBI’s witness protection program, Daniel is relocated to Northern California where he’s given residence with a long, lost Aunt who runs a bio-tech firm called NanoBytes. Over time, Daniel rebuilds his life and adapts well to his newfound family, but as fate would have it, comes under the scrutiny of the mob once again–but not before his Aunt finds a cure for his blindness. Using a radical untested procedure incorporating robotic nanites spliced with the DNA from animals and insects, Daniel is injected with a serum that only a mad scientist could create.

Does it work?

Better than anyone imagined.

What would you do with x-ray vision?

Interview with Daniel Raye, the main character from NANOVISION

So Daniel, what's it like having x-ray vision?
Well, I'd be lying if I said it wasn't unique, though it does have its own set of problems. I mean who'd of guessed that after being blind for four years that I'd get my sight back and have such fantastic power given to me.

So, you can really see through things?
I can, but not like you think. I mean it's not like me just looking at you and seeing your face in 3-D color, plain as day. My x-ray vision is more like an x-ray that can penetrate objects to see what's inside or what lies just beyond. After that I guess my brain fills in the detail.

But in Nanovision you saw a woman naked. You were able to admire her nudity. And she did seem to appear rather normal, if not exciting.
(Daniel laughs) Everyone seems to like that part. Yeah, that was Paige and I did see her body more than once. Truthfully though, I can see through anyone's clothes. It's just a matter of trying–but for the most part I don't. It doesn't hold the same appeal as it did in the beginning. I've gone beyond that. There's more important things to do with my newfound sight.

Yes, I heard about the child you saved–that must have been incredible.
Yeah, I have to admit that one was a real rush. She was only four and cramped away in that little compartment under the bed.

How did you find her?
Well the thing about my sight is this. My eyes can detect all sorts of things. I can actually see different types of light and heat, both in the infrared and x-ray spectrum and I can see more colors than you can imagine. In that case, I was able to see the warm air rising up from under the bed. It was a dead giveaway for me and I knew that something was under there. The kidnappers must have had a heating blanket or something in there to keep her warm at night and I could see the warm air currents rising up. We had her out in minutes and got her back with her parents safely.

Wow!
Yeah, it is beyond belief.

So what else can you do, or I guess I should say, see?

Well, my eyes have the ability to emit light when I'm in total darkness. It has something to do with the photophore DNA my Aunt used when she injected me. And of course I have stereoscopic vision. I can see both near and far at the same time and I have an incredible ability to judge distance. But what is really cool are the colors I can see. I think it stems from the insect DNA, cause when I look at a flower I see all kinds of stuff like different colors and weird lights surrounding it. Someone told me it was electromagnetic energy I was seeing. The FBI is still testing me. All I know is that aside from the occasional headaches it's really cool seeing what I do.

About the Author

As a young boy I cut my teeth on Marvel Comics, Edgar Rice Burrough's serial novels,(John Carter & Tarzan)and classic movies like "The Day The Earth Stood Still." I also spent many days reading classic science fiction works by authors such as Asimov, Heinlein, Clark, Silverberg, and Bradbury to name a few.

In school my favorite subjects were English and Theater Arts. It is the combination of all of this that led me into writing, especially screenplays. I love the visual medium of movies and television though too many movies today put special effects ahead of the story. I think the greatest compliment I've received about my writing is that people can see the visual images I am creating as I write.

NANOVISION is my latest novel and I think readers will have a lot of fun with it. In writing the novel I used my forty years of experience in the Las Vegas gaming industry as a background for the story. So for those of you who might ask—Are the casino scenes real? The answer is most definitely, Yes!
My other works on Amazon are: THE 5 MOONS OF TIIANA, and THE GARDEN, The Unauthorized Biography of Adam and Eve.

Wolves of the Northern Rift by Jon Messenger - Dream Cast

A NEW SERIES FROM JON MESSENGER:

We are pleased to share news about the first book in Jon Messenger's new Steampunk fiction series called the Magic and Machinery Series. Wolves of the Northern Rift will be the first book in the series and is scheduled to release on March 10, 2015.

RELEASE DATE: 3/10/15
GENRE: STEAMPUNK
PUBLISHER: CRIMSON TREE PUBLISHING

WOLVES OF THE NORTHERN RIFT

In a world of science, magic is an abomination.

Magic is an abomination. It spread from the Rift, a great chasm hundreds of miles long that nearly split the southern continent in two. The Rift was a portal, a gateway between their world of science and the mythological world of magic.

On the northern continent of Ocker, King Godwin declared that no magical monstrosity would be allowed within their borders. The Royal Inquisitors were formed to investigate reports of mystical occurrences and, should they be found, to destroy them.

Inquisitor Simon Whitlock knows his responsibilities all too well. Along with the apothecary, Luthor Strong, they’ve spent two years inquiring into such reports of magical abominations, though they’ve discovered far more charlatans than true magical creatures. When assigned to investigate Haversham and its reports of werewolves, Simon remains unconvinced that the rumors are true. What he discovers in the frozen little hamlet is that the werewolves are far more real than he believed; yet they’re hardly the most dangerous monster in the city.

AUTHOR JON MESSENGER DREAMS UP HIS ULTIMATE MOVIE CAST.

We asked author Jon Messenger who he would cast if he could choose anyone to star in a movie for Wolves of the Northern Rift. We love who he chose! Check them out below!
