Excerpt

"But soft what light through yonder window breaks. It is the east and Juliet is the sun. Arise fair sun and kill the envious moon, who is already sick and pale with grief that thou her maid art far more fair than she." Kira couldn't help but laugh at Tristan as he speedily grumbled out the lines without even an ounce of passion.

"You know this is supposed to be a love scene, right?" He looked up at her with contempt while she tried to swallow her smile.

"Oh, really? I hadn't noticed." He looked back down at the page and continued to read aloud in his monotone voice, totally ignoring her, which just prompted her to continue.

"Look, Tristan, there’s no point hiding the fact that you like me, from me I mean. I flipped through your notebook again after I saw that you’d left it behind. I saw the drawings you made of me." He looked up at her then, and Kira handed his small moleskin back to him, happy to at least have that out of the way. For some reason, she thought he was looking at her like she was an unruly child who wouldn't follow instructions. Where he got that from, she had no idea, but he continued with his speech so she continued talking over him.
"They were really great actually, pretty flattering," she smiled, hoping he would look at her again but he didn't. "Anyway, I think we should talk about what happened, not here obviously, but somewhere where we can meet in private." They both chose that moment to look around, and Kira saw they had the attention of both Luke and Tristan’s friends. Yeah, she thought, the classroom was definitely not the right place to have this conversation, and she kind of hoped talking would lead to other things like it had last time…

He finished reading his lines. "Hey Juliet, it’s your turn." He smirked.

"Oh, right," she looked down at her book. "O Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art though Romeo," she tried to copy his apathetic style of reading and was secretly overjoyed when he laughed at her.

"I get it, I sounded like an idiot." She just continued on, giving him the same silent treatment he had given her. "Okay, here’s the truth Kira. We can’t talk here and we shouldn't even be talking now or maybe ever."

"You told me that already." She stopped reading.

"Yet, you seem to have trouble understanding it. English is your first language, right?" She rolled her eyes at the joke. "Like I said before, we just can’t ever be."

"I understand what you’re saying, but I also know you don’t mean it." She leaned closer to him to prevent being overheard.

"I do," he forced the point.

"Oh really," she tried to push him now. "It didn't seem that way when you kissed me."

"Kira, forget that ever happened, okay?"

"Or what? You don’t scare me."

"I should," he said and shot Kira a lethal look. His eyes changed color to the lightest blue she could imagine and they held her captive, not in the romantic way, but as though she were a prisoner held paralyzed. His eyes were cold and made her shiver like she had been dropped in an arctic pool, and slowly his pupils began to expand, overtaking his eyeballs.

Kira was scared, and more than that, she felt like he knew it and didn't care. Her fear at not being able to move was slowly surpassed by a swell of power that stirred within her as a feeling of warmth spread to her hands. Kira broke free from him and looked at the floor. Her fingertips still tingled with whatever had coursed through her and allowed her to break his gaze. Kira leaned back against her chair and away from him. She touched her fingers to her cheek and felt them burn into her skin.

"What the hell was that?" She asked unsteadily, still not looking up. The heat emanating from her hand absorbed all of Kira’s thoughts.

"Me," he said with the venom gone from his voice. She looked at him again and caught the unbearably sad expression in his eyes before he looked away from her.

Or me? She thought to herself feeling the heat finally ebb.

RAVE REVIEWS for the Midnight Fire Series!

"The writing is effortlessly mind blowing. I could not put this entire series down. Once you're hooked, you won't either because it'll eat you up not knowing what happened! And then you'll pick a team like I did and you'll fall in love with all the characters and you'll want all the bad guys to die horribly! Just trust me when I say it really is your loss to miss out on this series! It's a blaze of glory!" - Happy Tales and Tails Blog

"Kaitlyn Davis writes some of the best action scenes I have come across in a young adult book; they are fast paced and so well delivered making this more than just a silly romance." - Reflections of a Bookworm

"The only downside to this series, is that it ended. But the ending was beautiful." - My Seryniti

"Kira isn't a human girl who is one dimensional and in love with a vampire. She's a well-thought out character who comes to life from the pages and steals into your heart. Read the books. Do it." - Urban Girl Reader

"I love and hate how fast of a read this was! I love it because I couldn't get enough of it and hate it because once I finished I wanted more!" - I Just Wanna Sit Here And Read

"I really enjoyed Ms Davis's writing, I was riveted throughout and was eager to see what would happen - there was drama, danger, action and romance that was wonderfully detailed and described." - Obsession With Books

"You'll make friends with Kira, choose sides with Tristan and Luke, and fall in love with the story at heart about a girl with so bright a future....even shades aren't gonna cut it." - Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers

About the Author
I've always been a writer. I grew up duct taping my novels together, started writing complete manuscripts in high school and studied creative writing at Johns Hopkins University. Upon graduating, I decided it was finally time to actually give my dream career a chance. So, of course, I started writing a young adult paranormal romance series -- and no, I'm not jumping on the bandwagon. I've been a true paranormal supporter for my entire life! I blame my obsession almost completely on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, my all-time favorite television show. And, before you ask: Yes, I own every season... even the post WB ones! I especially challenge anyone to watch the first three seasons and not fall in love with Angel, securing a lifelong love of vampires! Other culprits of my paranormal obsession are some of my favorite authors: JK Rowling, Raymond Feist, Meg Cabot, Richelle Mead, Lynne Ewing and Tamora Pierce.

BLURB

In America’s oldest and most haunted city, St. Augustine, Florida, Teenager Jeff Golden is in trouble. Horrible dreams won’t let him sleep, and he is up to his eyeballs in terrifying, paranormal experiences.

Finally, Jeff turns to his girlfriend Carla, and Lobo, the mysterious Native American shaman, for help. But what he discovers is a lot more than he bargained for.

A ghostly presence linked to a local historic cemetery is not only threatening Jeff’s sanity but his life as well. And before he knows what’s happening, Jeff finds both himself and Carla pulled into one of the nastiest and bloody events in Florida history. It is a place from which they may never escape.

EXCERPT

“Take it easy,” I said in a soft voice, but even so, her fingers gripped my left shoulder like a vice. “I‘m with you and it‘s OK,” I told her. Of course that was a bunch of crap, but what else was I going to say?

“You … weren't kidding, were you Golden Boy?” Carla finally managed to say, her voice really shaky and not just from being cold. Again, she looked all around, but her grip on my shoulder hadn‘t let up one bit.

“Nope, I wasn't kidding,” I replied taking a deep breath. “Welcome to my weird world.”

“Dear Lord, Jeff, you described it to me … but seeing it for real is … unbelievable.”

“Tell me about it,” I replied. I stood up then, making sure I kept my eyes on the road. I had to stop sitting on that wet ground. Carla did the same, but as she rose, she kept staring at something behind me. “What?” I asked, turning to look for myself.

“This is it,” Carla said, her voice barely a whisper. “This is where the battle is going to take place.”

With a chill of recognition, I had to agree with her. Lobo's description of the battle site included a pond with tall grass—exactly what was in front of us. I felt as if eyes were watching me from behind, on the other side of the road where I now knew the Seminoles hid. My breath caught in my throat as I again tried to figure out what to do.

From far down the road to our left, way beyond where we could see, a dog barked. Lobo hadn't said anything about dogs. Carla‘s eyes widened even more than they were before. I‘m sure mine must done the same thing. At that point though, I had no doubt over 100 soldiers would soon be coming up the road from the direction of the dog bark—right into the ambush.

Dream world or not, this was our reality and our lives depended on what we did or didn't do, you know?

Excerpt
“I’m quite capable of understanding sexual attraction, Mr. Drake.”
“Adam,” he said quietly, his eyes lowering to focus on my mouth. My heart skipped a beat in its frenetic pace.
“Adam.”
“Why does it make you uncomfortable to call me by my first name?”
I locked gazes with him, suddenly intensely aware of how close we were standing. I could smell him—a subtle scent, masculine, clean, like the ocean and the hint of peppermint candy on his breath. I could almost feel the heat and power oozing off of him in waves. I swallowed in a suddenly dry throat.
“I don’t know.”
“I want to give you one more thing to think about.”
“And what is that?”
He leaned closer, his head approaching mine. I didn’t have the time to step back nor, I think, the willpower to do it even if it had occurred to me. His mouth met mine in a firm, sure kiss.
It wasn’t overpowering. That was the first thing that surprised me. It was a subtle give and take—gentle, at first, a warm pressure of his lips on mine. Then he took a step closer and slid a hand around my waist, the other going to my back.
He retreated, just slightly, just enough to allow me to pursue him. His mouth moved against mine, teasing, pressing it open. Now his body pressed against mine, his head angled down to reach me, for I was at least five inches shorter than him.
I opened my mouth to him then and his tongue slid in easily. Nothing tentative in this kiss. He knew exactly what he was doing. He was telling me I had the control, declaring the decision mine and then swooping in and taking no prisoners.
His hands stayed put. I was glad of that though I wanted his touch everywhere—my aching breasts, the throbbing between my legs. Goose bumps prickled up and down my arms. His tongue explored my mouth with surety, easy possession. And—to my utter humiliation—I let loose a small whimper at the back of my throat.
The arm around my waist tightened when he heard it, responding immediately, almost instinctively. He pulled his tongue back, as if inviting me to follow him with my tongue. And tentatively, I did.
I’d been kissed before—back in high school when I was normal and I actually dated. But it had been years, now, and I’d never, ever been kissed like this. My tongue entered his mouth and he made a noise at the back of his throat, not quite a growl, kind of more like a huff. It emboldened me. Empowered me. I thrust my tongue, lacing my hands around the back of his neck. Our heads moved together for long minutes and I felt like I hadn’t breathed in a lifetime.
Everything was spinning around me and I—I was spinning too, delirious with want. Like a woman drowning in the middle of stormy sea, in desperate need of a life raft. That sea was Adam Drake and he was pulling me adrift, stranding me in some strange and forgotten land.

When finally he ended it, he pulled away so slowly that I could hardly tell our lips had parted until cool air passed between us. It was then that I saw that he was as affected as I was—flushed cheeks, his breath coming fast, his eyes dark and drunk with desire.

A cool breeze shook Mom’s rose bushes and the few hedges that surrounded one side of the patio. But when the wind stopped, the bushes didn’t. I froze staring into the darkness trying to see the threat that was waiting just to the side of my family home. I held my breath trying to decide whether or not to make a run for it. I couldn’t hesitate much longer. Rising slowly from the swing, I lingered again trying to judge the distance between the swings and the safety of the kitchen door.

Can I make it before it gets me? IT! Coming outside again tonight was a bad idea.

Excerpt
Amber (Chapter 1)
I’m inspecting a delicate fairy with wings like autumn leaves when the chimes above the store door ring. Two guys, maybe twenty-one or twenty-two, enter. Both are good-looking and have the tall muscular bodies of basketball players. That’s where the similarities between them end.
The dark-haired guy has that bad-boy vibe some girls find appealing, with his military boots, jeans and black leather jacket. His blond-haired friend is the kind of guy most girls feel safe with. He’s wearing sneakers, jeans and a blood donor T-shirt. The clothes and his friendly expression make him look trustworthy. Like he won’t break your heart or your body or your soul.
But I’ve long since learned appearances are never what they seem. Either man could be sweet or he could be dangerous. The trick is to never let them get close enough for you to find out the truth the hard way.
Blond guy walks to the counter and chats with the storeowner, a man not much older than us, with tattoos covering his arms. Neither pays attention to me. I go back to studying the wall.
From the corner of my eye, I notice the black-haired guy walking toward me. Instead of checking out the designs on the wall, his gaze roams over my body, taking in the view. Jerk.
A one-sided smile slides on to his face. He’s the kind of guy who uses his good looks to his advantage, the kind of guy whose sole mission in life is getting laid.
My hand tap-tap-taps against my right thigh, keeping pace with my heart, which has picked up speed as the jerk continues staring at me. I narrow my eyes at him, silently telling him to find another girl. He’s wasting his time with me.
The men at the counter laugh.
“Dude, that’s the first I’ve seen you get shot down by a female,” blond guy says, still chuckling.
Dark-haired guy flips him the finger and points to the fairy. “This would look hot on you right”—he strokes his finger against my lower back—“here.” His voice is low, the words slow and practiced.
I jerk away and stride to the back of the store. The other two men laugh even louder.

“Give up, Marcus,” blond guy says. “She’s a lot smarter than your usual girls. I like her already.”
