I was trained from birth
to be the best Agent possible. Growing up in a Military Training Academy for
unwanted children has its perks. I might not have ever been to a dance but I am
a sharp shooter, master at hand to hand combat and best hacker the Academy has
ever seen. I trained my whole life to pass the final and become an Elite agent.
The only problem? My entire life has been a lie. My father is a monster and
I’ve been trained to kill monsters.
About the Author
Jaci Wheeler lives in
the Central Valley of California with her husband and two precious kids.
Her love of literature began in Jr. High when she was introduced to Lowis
Lowry’s books. Since then she has had a passion for writing Young Adult books,
and creating strong female leads. When she’s not writing, she is advocating for
Autism Awareness and involved in the deaf community.
Her favorite things to do are play with her children, craft with her
friends, sleep while her husband watches movies and indulge in her favorite
addictions: Coffee, candy and shoes.
Emme is a sophomore in high school who starts dating,
Brendon Agretti, the popular senior who happens to be a senator's son and
well-known for his good looks. Emme feels out of her comfort zone in Brendon's
world and it doesn't help that his picture perfect ex, Lauren seems determined
to get back into his life along with every other girl who wants to be the
future Mrs. Agretti. Emme is already conflicted due to the fact her last
boyfriend cheated on her and her whole world is off kilter with her family
issues. Life suddenly seems easier keeping Brendon away and relying on her
crystals and horoscopes to guide her. Emme soon starts to realize she needs to
focus less on the stars and more on her senses. Can Emme get over her
insecurities and make her relationship work? Life sure is complicated when
you're dating the it guy.
Short Excerpt:
“By the way, did you hear Lauren got into Senator Agretti’s
old school?”
“Seriously? I wonder if she applied there because Brendon
did,” I said.
Margaux snorted. “Duh, of course. Seriously, she might as
well just pee on him to mark her territory.”
“Margaux, shut up,” Kylie said.
“Whatever. Anyway, the important thing is if Brendon knew
she was applying there,” Margaux said. “Em, do you think he knew?”
I hoped Lauren was just trying to follow Brendon, but what
if they had planned this whole thing while they were dating? What if he
convinced her to apply there so they could go to college together, wear
matching American flag sweaters with big scarves while drinking hot chocolate,
and jump into leaf piles just like a preppy clothing catalog. At least now I
didn’t have to worry about them reciting poetry to one another in South Bend,
but still, what if they had made plans to go to school together?
“Don’t worry about it,” Kylie said. “She was probably trying
to follow him—like she always does. She’s so pathetic.”
Kylie was trying to make me feel better, but Lauren was far
from pathetic. After all, she was pretty much the “Most Likely to Succeed”
poster girl. While she was out overachieving and saving the world without
messing up her perfect, bouncy hair, I was trying to get through each day. I
tried to push away the image of Lauren and Brendon holding hands and drinking
hot chocolate under a stadium blanket.

“A sweet, endearing story—you’ll fall in love with Emme just
like I did!” --Kimber Leigh Wheaton, YA/NA author
"Hager's authentic characters will resonate with
readers of all ages as they are immersed in the story - complete with teen drama and angst, but

Reviews by Leslie
What people are
saying about Krysten’s work:
From Teenage Book
Recommendations in the UK: "This is a fantastically relatable and real
book which I feel captures all of the insecurities and troubles which haunt the
modern teenage girl. It is about a young model who has to go through tough
times when she is torn between a life as a model and managing her friendships.
You learn which friends she can most trust and which will create the drama
typical of teenage life. Follow the life of Landry and try to see if you can
find out which are her true friends before their true colours are revealed.
This book is all about relationships, hopes and truth. I loved this book!"
From Books & Authors
Spot: “This book is such an inspiration for those who just care about their
looks and are tensed about them. This thing is looks aren't everything. This
book is related to every teen's problem. Hager has written a very inspiring
novel.”
“Krysten captures the teenage girl today. The struggles are
real, the issues are something children have been dealing with since before I
was a teen, and oddly-Krysten captures the readers! I was prepared for another
"Mean Girls" story. This is NOT that. This is the real story of
teenage girls! You watch Landry flower into a young woman who finds out trust
is an invaluable item to find, and friendships are hard to seek genuine realism
in. You will learn about relationships with not just friends, but peers, boys,
and others. The details put into the book will draw you, and make the story so
much more realistic. Krysten expresses emotions beautifully through her
writing, and the story flows flawlessly…” By
Candice J. Conway Simpson
“Krysten Lindsay
Hager understands what it means to be a teen today, and she writes with an
authentic voice. Landry, the main character, is funny, lively, and very real.
Readers will relate to her struggles with friends and family, self-esteem and
self-discovery, boys and school and life in general. It's fun to read about
Landry's blossoming modeling career and the changes it brings.” Review by Author Diana Jenkins

Have you ever craved something so badly that all reason was just an excuse getting in your way?
Have you needed something so desperately that you didn’t care how you got it or who you hurt in the process?
I have—and not that long ago.
Acceptance.
Acceptance… from family and friends…
Acceptance of the person I am inside and not outright rejection.
It didn’t come easily for me, and now I believe the world needs to know just how ruthless life can be. How that overwhelming yearning for acceptance can mold you into someone you don’t recognize when you look in the mirror. I’m through hiding behind one façade after another—it’s time for the world to meet the real me.

Excerpt
As she slid past her throne,
Ryleigh’s sword caught on the arm, and she took a step back and untangled it.
She’d never get used to wearing the stupid thing everywhere she went. If not
for Jackson’s insistence, it’d probably be stuffed under her bed beside the
baseball bat she kept hidden there.
She pulled open a drawer on the side
table behind her throne and rifled through the papers she’d stuffed in there in
search of her leather appointment book. If she couldn’t find answers, may as
well get some work done. It was either that or dwell on Jackson’s mission and
the terror it brought. She pressed a hand against her heaving stomach. No. She
couldn’t think about that. She had more immediate problems she might actually
be able to do something about.
Several meetings had to be
scheduled, and without writing them down, she’d never keep track of where she
was supposed to be. Especially with her mind so jumbled with images of Jackson
going up against Chayce.
She snatched the book, shoved the
drawers shut, and turned to leave.
Ryleigh’s vision blurred. The air
shimmered in the center of the throne room, and her ears popped.
She ripped her sword from its sheath
even as the portal opened.
A seven-foot-tall beast built of
solid muscle tore through the portal. A triple headed flail swung from one
massive hand.

Nathanael
That night she
went to bed without any answers. The night is warm, at least that’s what the
box called a ‘Television’ announced this morning. A breeze brings with it a
different scent. One he’s not familiar with yet. Sera has been asleep for a
while now. The only thing to keep him company is the sound of the woods
surrounding her house. A cricket chirps, and the wind rustles between the
leaves.
Nathanael turns
away, swinging his legs onto the floor. The room is quiet as he glides over to
her bedside. The gentle curve of her cheek is calm, relaxed even. Maybe this is
all in his head. Maybe this is normal for Earth.
Just then, her
brows furrow in her sleep—her head flinging to the side. Maybe not. Movement
above his head draws his attention. The
shadows from the tree branches are growing, stretching across the ceiling
closer and closer to the bed. His arms fling outward preparing for an attack.
The shadows elongate farther, creeping like fingers reaching for her.
Something is
strange, yet he can sense no evil around. What is going on? Sera whines in her
sleep, tossing and turning now. Not having anything else to do, Nathanael
reaches out for her. His hand touches her shoulder and Sera stops struggling;
her face peaceful again. A light outside the window causes the shadows to
slowly dissipate. The light grows brighter and brighter. Curiously, Nathanael
approaches the window.
Lampyridae, or
lightening bugs as Sera calls them, have begun to flock to her window. They
float in a growing swarm suspended in the warm winter air.
Suddenly, Sera
jumps halfway up in bed. The spell breaks, causing them to scatter. Her eyes
dart around the room. With a sigh, she rolls over clutching her blanket against
her chest.
The night
returns to normal. After a few minutes, Sera’s breathing evens out. Nathanael
wanders over to her bed again. She stopped at the touch of his hand. This keeps
getting even more curious. He attempts to touch her again.
Her skin is
warm, too warm, feverish for a human. She doesn’t look uncomfortable though;
her sleep even seems peaceful. These things only happen when she is asleep.
This girl has no idea she’s even doing this. The Lord has placed him here for a
reason. He finally understands his purpose, to dissipate the cloud of mystery
surrounding the fiery red headed dreamer.

Excerpt
The
guard yanked me to face the group. Not ten feet away
towered
one of the largest horses I’d ever seen. Its humungous
head
swung back and forth as if it were proud of the armored
breast
and nose shields. On top soared Knight Werner whose
piercing
blue eyes searched my face. For a moment, the world
retracted
into stillness. I felt my knees wobble.
Any moment now they’d cut off my head. Hadn’t Bero said
the
Lord would kill me? Yet, the Lord of Hanstein neither showed
anger,
surprise nor fear. Nobody spoke as I stood pinned between
the
guards, their hands iron cuffs on my arms. I smelled them,
their
unwashed bodies and filthy hands. I wanted to leave the
game.
Return to the safety of my former life. Now! I sucked air.
My room might as well have been on the moon. Werner’s
men
waited,
probably ready to charge on command.
“Your name is Nerds,” Werner finally said. The blue
eyes were
unsettling.
I stared up in surprise. “I’m Max.”
“Then what is the odd script on your robe? Are you a
ruler’s
son?”
He pulled his sword and pointed toward my chest. I kept
my
eyes on the tip of the blade when I remembered. The right
side
of my T-shirt had a kind of logo showing the word Nerds
underneath
a crown. Despite the filth, the printed word and
image
were clearly visible. Bero hadn’t noticed because he
probably
couldn’t read.
“I…it is a fashion where I come from,” I stumbled. I
wanted to
kick
himself, having opened the door to more disaster. Werner’s
knights
broke into chuckles.
Werner retracted his sword. “Most interesting. Tell us,
you
come
from where?”
“A distant place, My Lord,” I said, attempting to buy
time.
“I’ve traveled afar, a pilgrimage to Jerusalem ten
years ago.”
Confidence
radiated from the knight’s voice. “You speak like a
foreigner.
Are you on a quest?” Werner’s expression was still
more
curious than suspicious. A glimmer smoldered in his eyes
as
if the blue had been turned into gas flames.
