Excerpt

Taking a deep breath, I left the cover of the wall and slowly sauntered out through the crowd with my head held high. The warriors halted in mid-motion, bowing as I walked past them heading toward Brayden. He hadn’t turn to acknowledge me, but with the rigid stance and the tenseness in his muscles I knew he could feel I was there.

“What are you doing here?” Brayden asked, his voice bland and disinterested as he kept his back to me.

“I’m not going to answer that question until you turn to face me,” I snapped. The warriors around us gasped and halted with their mouths wide open, staring back and forth at us.

Brayden crossed his arms over his chest and finally turned to face me. Yep, he was back to being the emotionless bastard that he was before. However, I was going to fix that problem … fast. Now that I had his attention I said, “Whether you like it or not I’m here to train. Either you can fight with me or I’ll find one of these other handsome warriors to teach me a thing or two.”

When all he did was clench his teeth, I backed away from him and pulled out my sword, turning around so I could address the warriors. “All right, since Prince Brayden won’t answer me, who here wants to fight me and help me train?”

Several of the warriors smiled while others looked to Brayden for guidance. I heard one of them whispering to another, “I don’t feel right about fighting his queen.”

Brayden heard the fighter say it too because his gaze instantly found mine. “I’m not his queen,” I announced, narrowing my eyes at him.

“She’s right,” he agreed. “She’s not my queen. If she wants to fight then let’s show her how we do it in the Winter Court.”

The guys all hollered and resumed back to their fighting, except I caught several of them sneak glances my way to watch me battle. Brayden picked a couple of his warriors to stand back and join me, all circling me like I was their prey. With my sword gripped firmly in my right hand, I was ready. However, I couldn’t stop myself from taunting Brayden just a little bit more. He was standing outside of the circle, watching on with a smirk on his face.

“What’s wrong, Prince Brayden, afraid you might get your ass kicked?” I teased.

Brayden’s smirk grew wider and he retorted back, “Not at all, Princess. I just have to see if you are worthy enough to fight me.”

Interviews:

Fun Facts from the Books in the Dangerous Attraction Boxed Set

Tell us one fun fact from the book featured in the boxed set.

Jill Sanders: To find out more about the drug lords and life of Brazil, I did several weeks of research about the slums in Rio. I wanted to show both sides of Carnival and the beautiful country of Brazil.

Sharon Hamilton: I did well with the first book in my series, Accidental SEAL. But this book, Fallen SEAL Legacy, has been my best seller so far, and really got me the author ranking I have had now for over a year. I knew Cooper was going to be my next hero before I got the first one done.

Patricia Rosemoor: See Me In Your Dreams is the first book in The McKenna Legacy. My maternal grandmother was a McKenna, and both my uncle and a distant cousin developed lovely printed family trees of the McKennas -- my inspiration for the series.

Dana Marton: Broslin, PA, the small town in my book, is the mushroom capital of the U.S. They even have mushroom ice cream!

Kaylea Cross: I combined a series of current events that happened last year in the Middle East and wove them into the plot for Ignited.

Toni Anderson: The book centers around snow leopards and I spent a lot of time reading about the adventures of a tracking team in Mongolia on The Snow Leopard Trust website. In my previous life as a biologist I implanted telemetry devices into fish and tracked them around Canada. This was way cooler.

Debra Burroughs: The couple featured on the cover of my book is actually my son and his bride. The photo was borrowed from their engagement photo portfolio. The main characters, Ryan and Kate, are loosely based on them, their physical descriptions and their personalities.

Rebecca York: In Christmas Captive, the hero, Jordan Campbell, is in a coma.  When the heroine, Hannah Andrews, steps into his coma dream, she finds herself in a hotel where the   room numbers represent years from his life.  If she steps into the room, she’s in that year, watching what happened in the past.

Lori Ryan: To find Jack’s house, I gave myself a budget of fifteen million and went shopping on Realtor.com. I managed to find what I wanted under budget at twelve million. It had gorgeous sweeping lawns on the bank of the Long Island Sound, a dock leading to the water that was lit with tea lights at night, hot tub and pool, and rich mahogany accents throughout. I love shopping with fictional money!

Marie Astor: I had a ton of fun picking out the cover for Catching the Bad Guy. The main character, Janet Maple, has a Jack Russell terrier, Baxter: that's him on the cover. My initial choices included Baxter wearing a police cap or holding a telephone receiver. In the end I decided to go with Baxter holding a magnifying glass — hope you like the result!

     “Noah, hold up.”
He ignored her. She dug her heels into the ground and hung on. He stopped, reluctantly turning. She looked at his face, so dear. The rain had matted down his hair, the brown strands sticking to his cheeks. She reached up, picking apart some of them, letting her fingers linger over his eyelids. She’d liked him almost from the first moment he’d come to her house, hands shoved into his jeans, face tired. She let her fingers fall down to his lips and his expression softened.
“We don’t have time for this,” he said gently. She shook her head, drew him closer. He came willingly and she dug her nose into his chest as they clung to each other. When she lifted her face, he kissed her roughly, as if afraid she wasn’t real. She hung onto him, kissing back untilthe chill from the rain disappeared and all she could think about was the heat between them. He groaned, kissing down her jaw, hands shaking.
     “I’m not dead,” she said.
He hugged her tighter, trembling. “Your skin was all black. God.”
She wrinkled her nose. “Um, ewww.”
He choked out a laugh. “Yeah, it was certainly gross. I waited for you to disintegrate, but you never did. I grabbed you and the house collapsed around us as I ran. I didn’t know what to do.” He pulled back. Amelia couldn’t tell if he was crying—the rain soaked them both.
“I’m sorry. I didn’t know how to tell you about me.” She sighed. “I didn’t know if I should tell you.”
“Leah doesn’t believe you, does she?” he asked, voice soft.
A pang of terror raced through her as she thought about facing her daughter again.
“No. I tried to explain it to her but she thinks I’m crazy. It’s not like I could demonstrate.” She turned away, began walking down the trail again. “I mean, how do you explain this to your daughter?” She waved at herself.
Noah slung his arm around her shoulders. “What happens if you kill yourself?”
From the light tone of his voice, Amelia knew he had no idea. “I would die for real,” she said, flatly.
He stopped, face drawn. “Okay, I could see how that would be bad.”
She snorted. “Why do you think there aren’t more of us running around? The women in my family are immortal. We live and die and then come back to life. Like pushing a reset button. One of us could conceivably do this forever.”
Noah shuddered, clearly thinking of the larger picture.
“Exactly. And yes, before you ask, some of us tried. My mother told me stories about a few of our ancestors who went insane after centuries of rebirth. She mentioned one who forced a slave to kill her every year so she never aged.” Amelia’s step faltered.
“So how come there aren’t more of you?” Noah asked.
“We have two weaknesses: we can kill ourselves and we can kill each other.”
“But that means—” he broke off, his voice cracking.
     “Yeah. We eat our own.”

Christine Klocek-Lim   spends most of her time daydreaming—which isn't much different from what she did as a girl in northeast Pennsylvania, as a college student in Pittsburgh, as a twenty-something technical writer in New York City, and as a young mother in suburban New Jersey. For the past decade or so she's been dream-surfing in the Lehigh Valley of Pennsylvania.
She’s published one young adult novel, Disintegrate, and is pleased to be publishing her first sci-fi romance, Who Saw the Deep, an Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award semi-finalist.
She received the 2009 Ellen La Forge Memorial Prize in poetry. She has four chapbooks: Ballroom - a love story, Cloud Studies - a sonnet sequence, How to photograph the heart, and The book of small treasures.

The strength of Sloane’s heart is about to be put to the ultimate test. After the Eclipse – the night vampires began openly slaughtering human victims – everything changed. I opened the door and flipped on the light. At first, I thought it was the smallest closet ever. Then I looked to my right, and my eyes nearly popped out of my head. The closet ran behind the entire length of the TV wall, lined with racks, cubbies for shoes, and drawers. For the most part, the racks were empty, save for a few pairs of jeans and some plain shirts.
“All this” – I motioned around the room – “is for me?”
Aden nodded. “Yep. If you don’t like the color –”
“It’s amazing. I wouldn’t change a thing.”
Mrs. Knight’s voice floated up the stairs. “Guess I’ll go claim that aspirin,” Aden said. “There are clean towels in the bathroom if you want to shower.” He turned to leave.
“Hey,” I said.
He paused, quirking a brow in that quizzical way of his.
“Sorry I punched you in the face,” I mumbled, shifting my weight.
He tried to grin and then winced, touching his jaw. It was swollen, but I could tell it was already starting to heal. As he looked at me, something in his eyes shifted. “You can make it up to me.”
My brows furrowed.
He walked back, stopping a few inches in front of me. “Go on a date with me.”
I blinked in surprise. That wasn’t what I had expected him to say. “I just punched you in the face, and you want to go out with me?”
“Eh, it’s all relative. The way I see it, it’s not every day I find a girl who can kick my ass. It’s kind of hot.” The non-bruised side of his face lifted into a wry smile.
I flushed. No one had ever called me “hot” before. My best friends were a bunch of guys, and they treated me like one of the boys. Then again, “hot” wasn’t exactly a compliment in my book. It usually meant “bang-able,” not exactly something a respectable girl wanted to be called.
“So what do you think?” he asked softly.
“No.”
“No?”
I firmly shook my head. “No way. Not in your wildest dreams.”
The look on his face said he clearly wasn’t used to being blown off. His eyes held mine as he reached up to cradle my cheek. “Then I guess I’ll have to change your mind.”
I swatted his hand away and turned around before he could see me blush anymore. He chuckled, and I was afraid he’d push the topic, but a few seconds later I heard the door close.
My heart beat wildly. What was the matter with me? This was the guy who ruined my life, so shouldn’t I hate him? I tried to make sense of my feelings.“All right, sure,” I said to myself, pacing. “You’re attracted to him. It’s perfectly natural. He’s handsome, he’s surprisingly sweet, he’s…”
He had been very kind to me, which was the exact opposite of the picture the government and my memories had painted for us. Vampires should be wild, feral creatures whose sole purpose was to prey on humans. But Aden and his mother, Paris, Rook and Angel, this place… they seemed normal, almost human, with the exception of the charming General Frost.
I groaned and rubbed my eyes, more confused than when I’d started.

Character Interview - Sloane

Today, Krystle Jones, author of the young adult dystopian/PNR series The Red Sector Chronicles, will be interviewing her main character, Sloane McAllister!
KRYSTLE: So, Sloane, tell the readers a little about yourself.
SLOANE: Um… *tucks hair behind ear and stares at the floor* I’m, uh, a vampire hunter who kind of became a vampire. *laughs* Yeah, EPIC fail.
KRYSTLE: *grins* How’s that working out for you?
SLOANE: Well, you know, it was a big adjustment at first. And by big adjustment, I mean I totally freaking hated it! *laughs* But you get used to it, and being a vampire isn’t all bad. *looks at handsome blond vampire off-stage*
ADEN: (shouted) Yeah, it isn’t!
SLOANE: Get out of my interview!
KRYSTLE: Aden, darling, you’ll get your turn in a minute.
ADEN: *sad face*
SLOANE: *sighs* Why does he have to look so cute when he’s sad?
KRYSTLE: Anyway, back to the vampire thing. How did you feel when you first went into the Red Sector to look for your brother?
SLOANE: Scared to death! Duh! I mean, the Red Sectors are crazy dangerous. All those vampires… *shudders*
KRYSTLE: And yet you went anyway.
SLOANE: *glares at author* And whose fault is that?
KRYSTLE: *grins* I think you relish being in danger, a bit of a thrill-seeker, as it were. Not to mention you’re stubborn and reckless.
SLOANE: Hey! Those are my finer qualities. And I wouldn’t have had to be in dangerous situations if you hadn’t kept putting me in them.
KRYSTLE: You know you liked it.
SLOANE: *suppresses a smile*
KRYSTLE: Right. Well, thanks for coming today, Sloane! Good luck staying out of trouble. You’re going to need it. *last part grumbled*
SLOANE: I heard that! Vampire hearing, remember! *points to ears*

Character Interview - Leo

Today, Krystle Jones, author of the young adult dystopian/PNR series The Red Sector Chronicles, will be interviewing vampire hunter hottie, Leo Rinaldi!
KRYSTLE: Hi, Leo!
LEO: *sexy grin* Hey, girl. Sup?
KRYSTLE: Oh, my. *blushes* So how are things going with the vampire hunter Guild?
LEO: Oh, you know. It’s the same thing every day. Wake up, look hot, go kick some vampire ass. Typical vigilante stuff, since, you know, vampire hunting is kind of illegal. *mumbles that last part*
KRYSTLE: And how do you feel about Sloane becoming a vampire?
LEO: *eyes narrow* I don’t know. But I do know I’m gonna kick that blond vampire’s ass when I see him.
*Aden slips further into the shadows back-stage.*
KRYSTLE: Now, now. No fighting between characters unless I initiate it! So tell us a little bit about yourself.
LEO: *looks audience straight in the eyes* I’m the best character in this whole book – ‘cept for my girl, Sloane, that is.
SLOANE: *from off-stage* Aw, Leo! Thanks! *makes a heart symbol with her hands*
LEO: *winks* I got your back, girl.
KRYSTLE: Oh, boy. Did I really make you so shamelessly flirtatious?
LEO: Actually, you didn’t make me flirtatious enough. What’s up with that? I was expecting a few more love scenes, if you know what I mean.
KRSYTLE: Um, you do know I write YA, right?
LEO: So? You can push the boundaries. Won’t be any worse than what they see on TV. Hey, how about you write a new novel: Fifty Shades of Leo?
KRYSTLE: Um-kay, I can see this is starting to spiral out of control. That’s all for today! Thanks, Leo!
LEO: Wait a minute! I’m not even done with my book proposition yet!
