Christmas at the Gingerbread Cafe

Rebecca Raisin

Contemporary Romance
Published by Carina UK (Harlequin)

Available at Amazon-US * Amazon-UK

Christmas is the season the Gingerbread Café was made for…but owner Lily couldn’t be feeling less merry if she tried. She’s spent another year dreaming of being whisked away on a sleigh-ride for two, but she’s facing festive season alone – again. And, just to give her another reason to feel anything other than candy-cane perky, a new shop across the road has opened… Not only is it selling baked goods, but the owner, with his seriously charming smile, has every girl in town swooning.

But Lily isn’t about to let her business crumble — the Gingerbread Café is the heart of the community, and she’s going to fight for it! This could be the Christmas that maybe, just maybe, all her dreams – even the someone-to-decorate-the-Christmas-tree-with ones – really do come true!

My Review: I received this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

Christmas at the Gingerbread Cafe is a short and sweet novella about finding love where you least expect it. Christmas can be a difficult time of the year for some people, and Lily is no exception. Her husband, Joel, ran off two years ago and she's still pining away for him. She pours all of her energy into her business, a shop in the small town of Ashford, CT. Her busiest time of the year is Christmas, but this year sales are much slower than ever before.

Enter Damon, a hunky guy who opens a rival shop across the street from Lily. What follows is a rather humorous attempt at one-upmanship to increase sales. Of course, true attraction can only be fought for so long before both parties give in. I really enjoyed the characters in this novella, especially Lily's friend and business associate, CeeCee. She's quite a character, making it virtually impossible not to fall in love with her.

The plot and romance are short, yet enjoyable to read. Of course there's some conflict and tension, not just from the competing businesses but also from family. Ex-husbands always have terrible timing, and Joel is no exception. If you are looking for something warmhearted and sweet, add Christmas at the Gingerbread Cafe to your TBR list. This story is especially fun reading during the holidays.

Book Blitz: Exception by Patty Maximini - Excerpt. Guest Post & Giveaway

Exception

Patty Maximini

Contemporary Romance

Available at Amazon * B&N

When all hope for moving on from a life filled with pain and abuse was gone, Emily Watson closed herself off to the world, packed her bags, and moved across the country in search of a new life. What she found was a career she adored and friends she loved. It wasn’t a full and complete life, but it was definitely better than what she knew before.

When all hope for being loved and accepted for who he was instead of what he had was gone, Taylor Carter decided that trusting people outside of his family wasn’t really smart and would only lead to disappointment. With his world turned upside down, his life became about his work, and every new relationship was meaningless and superficial. He was safe and definitely content but never truly happy.

When all hope for staying awake during a long day was gone, Emily and Taylor found themselves at the same coffee cart. Little did they know then that the worst coffee they’d ever had would forever change their lives.

When hopeless people are blinded by an endless pain, when contentment and safety feel like the best options, and when love seems impossible, they may just find an exception.

Excerpt

Emily looked in his eyes and felt blood rush to her face once again. How could she tell him what had happened without making things weird? Telling him would ruin everything. She offered her most honest smile before speaking. “It’s nothing Tay, really. Just let it go. Please.”
At her words, he let go of her hand and stepped back. For the first time since they’d met, she was keeping something from him. For the first time, something serious enough to take her two best friends out of their beds had happened, yet she refused to tell him what. For the first time, she didn’t trust him enough to be open and honest, and he had no idea why.
The pain he felt was indescribable and it showed in his eyes. He cleared his throat before speaking again. “It is something. Something you chose to share with them and not with me.” He shook his head, slowly. “I thought our friendship was special. I thought I was special, Emily. I thought you and I kept no secrets.” Holding her gaze, he was silent and took a long breath. A small, sad smile tugged at his lips before he spoke again. “Guess I was wrong.”
Tears pooled in Emily’s eyes and she took a step towards him, but for the first time, he didn’t welcome the closeness between them and, lifting his hands, took a step back. She opened her mouth to speak, to try to explain what had happened, or at least to ask him to wait a little until she could tell him, but he shook his head and walked away before she ever had the chance.
She followed him with her eyes until his back passed through the door, and he slammed it closed behind him. Tears ran from her eyes to her cheeks, and she barely felt the set of hands that held her shoulders. For the first time in years she couldn’t care less if someone touched her. Nothing in the world could crush her any further.
When her eyes finally focused she saw her two best friends standing next to her. Zack wiped the tears from her face with the same loving and understanding expression he always had, while Jody muttered curses behind him.
“He hates me.”

Meet the Characters

Taylor Carter could be described as the quintessential good guy with a temper. He’s caring, thoughtful, loyal and sweet to those allowed into his defenses. He’s the type of man that would go to the ends of the Earth and take extreme measures to protect those he loves. The problem is that he doesn’t allow himself to love very often. His past has shown him that people can’t be trusted, especially when you have what most people don’t. Therefore, he keeps mostly to himself.
Tay is 30 years-old, tall (6’2’’) and bulky, with chocolate brown hair and eyes. The strong, angular planes of his face are accentuated by a perfectly manicured stubble and a nice, big smile, one that grows whenever he’s looking at Emily. He’s a Canadian, but for the past decade he has alternated between living in the US and England. He has a PhD degree in fine arts with an emphasis on photography and modern art. Good coffee is at the very top of the list of things he can’t live without. His middle name is Ryan, but that’s something very few people know.

Emily Anne Watson is a woman with a broken past. Of all the things a person is exposed to in life, pain and heartache have been the ones she experienced the most. Those experiences have made her wary of people and scared of human contact in general. She hates being touched and having strange people surrounding her. Her safe haven is the tight nit group of friends that have become a family to her. They are the ones that can make her break out of her shell and show her true self. Despite all of that, she never allowed herself to become bitter and always strives to be a little sweeter than required.
Ems is 28 years-old, on the shorter side (5’2’’), petite, and has black hair and deep blue eyes. In all accounts, she’s beautiful. She grew up in California, but after some pretty traumatic experiences, she moved to New Haven, Connecticut, where she currently lives. She works as a book reviewer for a prominent lifestyle blog, and heads a study group and book club to some Yale students. Her favorite dessert is cheesecake, which was the inspiration to the nickname her two best friends gave her. She has a passion for all things Jane Austen and taught herself how to play the piano, something she doesn’t get to do much.

Zackary Clark is one of Emily’s best friends. He’s a single child of very traditional parents, who cut off all contact with him when he admitted to being gay at age 18. Since then he’s been on his own, counting only on his lifelong friend, Jody, and his aunt and uncle, May and Ben, who live in Vermont. He’s a pediatric surgeon and the heart of Emily’s group of friends.  He’s very protective of Emily and has taken upon himself the job of protecting her from those that mean her harm. He’s tall and thin, with coopery hair and green eyes.

Jody Francis O’Connell is Emily’s other best friend and easily the glue that keeps the group together. She has no filter, none whatsoever, which makes her such a genuine person and a lot of fun to hang out with. Her parents died in a car crash, leaving her the family restaurant, Old Joe’s, to take care of. She’s been engaged to Bradley for five years and living with him for one, but as of right now, they have no plans of getting married. In a perfect match to her outlandish personality, she’s got red hair, big boobs and all the right curves.

“What’s so funny?” he demanded.

“Nothing. It’s just that you’re not exactly the kind of guy a girl would just dig up for an acceptable date to a family party.” Matt was more like dream-date material. She never would have had the courage to ask him out had she run into him in any normal way.

“What does that mean?” To her surprise, he actually sounded offended. “I can be an acceptable date.”

“What are you getting all grouchy about? I just meant you’re too good to be dug up from the bottom of the heap.”

“Oh.” His expression relaxed. “That’s all right then.”

She couldn’t help but giggle again at his quickly changing emotions. He was definitely an artist. “Now you’re all pleased with yourself again. I’ve never met a man with such pomposity.”

He slid his hand down her spine and kept it at the small of her back as he walked with her to the front door. “What did you say I have?”

“Pomposity.”

“I’m not sure that’s really a word.”

“Of course it is. It’s the state of being pompous. Look it up. The dictionary will cross-list the word with ‘Matthew Lynch’.”

My Review: I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

*Sigh*. Sail Away with Me is such an entrancing romance. I absolutely love a story where everything seems to work out for everyone involved. What better place than a cruise ship to find true love. Thank goodness I'm getting on a cruise ship in less than a week, or I think I might have died of jealousy! Ms. Deveaux has created two great characters and written them into a wonderful love story.

Jody is newly divorced, but it sounds like her marriage was over long before the papers were finalized. With a twelve-year-old son to care for, she doesn't think she has time to even look for another love. Fortunately, her flying shoe thought differently and flew straight to sexy Taggart. Such an amusing way to meet a guy. What follows is a whirlwind romance full of fun and late night passion aboard a glamorous cruise ship.

Taggart is a hunky self-help guru who is on the cruise hosting a series of lectures. He comes off as a player the was he's so smooth with Jody. This guy really has the right moves. I doubt there's a woman out there who could resist a full blast of his charm aimed at them. He falls hard for Jody. But the two soon discover that life on land isn't as magical as it is at sea. Real life intrudes, serving up some major conflict in their budding relationship. For a self-help guru, Taggart certainly is blind when it comes to his own life.

The first half of the story takes place during the cruise and the second part is the aftermath. I loved all the romantic scenes on the cruise ship. Taggart and Jody were sizzling. The secondary characters were a lot of fun. Each one had just enough back story to make them interesting. If you're looking for a fast-paced, sweet romance with lots of sizzling encounters, be sure to add Sail Away With Me to your TBR list.

“Hey there, Jody,” he called out.

“Oh, hi….Taggart,” she said with surprise, pretending she hadn’t seen him.

“We really have to stop meeting like this.” He smiled and walked towards her   down the narrow hall
dotted with luggage.

She laughed nervously at the cliché that was proving all too true if she was to keep her sanity. “I guess so. Well, this is my room.” She fidgeted with her keycard as he came up beside her.

“Mine’s just down the hall.” Taggart pointed behind him, but he just stood there, his tall frame close to
her. She looked up at him, overly aware of the scent of sandalwood, one of her favorites. Very masculine.

“Mmm...coincidence,” she said, the hallway becoming smaller by the minute when he flashed that boyish smile, with one corner of his mouth raised. Cocky, but undeniably sexy at the same time.

Unable to break the gaze, she tried to insert the keycard into the lock, not paying attention to what she
was doing. The card grazed the slot and she forced her eyes away from his.

“I guess you didn’t find your friends after all?” he inquired, leaning casually against the wall, as she slid the keycard all the way in the lock.

Caught red handed at her own lie, she smiled down at her shoes. “No, I didn’t.”

“So you can have that drink with me after all,” he stated flatly, placing his hand over hers as she held the
key in the lock.

Her heart pounded in her chest. She couldn’t move a muscle. “I don’t think that’s a good idea,” she said.

He frowned but left his hand on hers. “Because?”

Because? Her mind raced. She couldn’t tell him it was because she was afraid. Afraid how her body trembled when he was near, how her cheeks burned and her sex thrummed.

“I’ll wait,” he said with a devilish grin eyeing the keycard still in the lock.

“I really don’t think it’s a good idea, is all.”

“You already said that,” he said straight faced, but she could see the playful look in his eyes. As he
removed his hand, he continued to lean easily on the doorframe, his face close to hers as if he had all
the time in the world to wait for her to be ready. He was close enough she could see the barely visible
laugh lines when he smiled and the slight five o clock shadow on his chiseled jaw.

“Look Taggart,” she said, just saying his name made her heart beat faster. “I’m not ready for…” her
heart beat rapidly thinking about just what she wasn’t ready for… to be intimate with a man.

“Ready for what?” he teased. A flush of desire rushed through her. He was playing with her, flirting with
her.

Excerpt

I didn’t mean to gawk, or blush, or get a goofy grin on my face, but as he stood there just inside the archway of the alcove I’m pretty sure I did all three. Though in my defence, I couldn’t help it – he looked amazing. I’d never thought of Alex as “hot,” or “gorgeous,” or any of the other terms that a lot of girls my age used to describe a good looking guy. That isn’t to say that Alex wasn’t any of those things, or that I didn’t find him attractive, as I did. Very much so, in fact. His dark blonde hair was always styled, he dressed very well, and his eyes – which had always been my favourite feature – were the most amazingly clear shade of storm cloud blue you could imagine. The thing was that the specifics of his appearance weren’t usually what came to mind when I thought about him. He was Alex. It had never mattered what he looked like.
And while it still didn’t matter, I was not about to pretend like I didn’t notice. He was wearing a black tux like Jocelyn, but instead of the white shirt and black tie, Alex’s tie and shirt were black, and he also had a charcoal gray vest on under his jacket. His cuffs were French, his shoes shone as though they were new, and across his chest lay the same green sash Jocelyn was wearing.
Not going to lie, there was definitely a flush rising up my neck….
Though red as I was, oddly enough, Alex’s didn’t blush at all. I’d have thought with me ogling him the way I was, that his ears would be ablaze, but then again, he seemed far too preoccupied to notice the way I was looking at him. Preoccupied… looking at me. His eyes clung to me like condensation on a glass, with an expression that seemed to hover between anger and fear – though deep down I knew it was neither. Still, I couldn’t help but feel self-conscious.
Why didn’t he say anything? Was he upset? Did he not like the dress? Was something wrong?
I took a breath to speak, but before I could find my voice he was coming straight toward me. He didn’t look around, didn’t check the hall, or so much as shift his eyes away from mine as he crossed the small alcove in three strides, took my face in his hands, and kissed me.
And dear God… what a kiss…
His mouth moved against mine with more passion than I’d ever felt from him before. His right hand slid up into my hair and gently but firmly held my mouth to his, while his left dropped to my waist and pulled me tightly against him. His fervour poured over me like boiling water over ice, melting me down to my core. I had no idea what had come over him, but whatever it was, it was hot, it was intense, and if he wasn’t careful, it was going to bring me to my knees.
But what hit me the hardest wasn’t his sudden hunger or intensity, but the hint of something deeper, driving like an undercurrent beneath his passion. It was something I’d never seen from him before, but unmistakable all the same.
Possession.
Alex had never been a dominant or outspoken person in general, but conscious or not, something in him was definitely sending a message: “She is mine.” It may have only been implied, but it was definitely there, and the very idea sent a tingling shiver across my skin as I gripped the lapels of his jacket with a throaty sigh. The message was raw, it was primal, and above all else, it was true: I was his. And he was mine. The fact that we had to hide it around these people didn’t make it any less valid. We belonged to one another.
Forever.
A few short seconds later he pulled back with a husky breath, resting his forehead against mine for a moment before releasing me and stepping back slowly, his eyes glowing. He hadn’t said a word – he hadn’t needed to. I smiled, hoping he saw the “I love you” in my eyes. His answering smile told me he did.

A Dream of Books

Lovey Dovey Books

“There are a lot of other things to love about The Holders – a detailed history and Celtic element come to mind – but it was really the characters that sold this novel for me.”
More Than Just Magic

About the Author
Julianna was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and spent the majority of her educational career convinced she would be a musician. However, after receiving her music degree from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, she realized that she'd been born in the wrong era for her dreams of singing jazz to adoring fans clad in zoot-suits and flapper dresses to come true, and began to wonder if her true calling might be elsewhere.

While Julianna had always excelled in writing throughout school, she'd never considered it a career possibility until about three years ago, when she'd gotten her first story idea and decided to go for it. She grabbed her laptop, started typing away, and has never looked back.

Another Shot At Love

Niecey Roy

Contemporary Romantic Comedy

Available at Amazon

Imogen Gorecki has a problem—her twin sister just got engaged, and guess who’s the best man? That’s right, her scum-of-an-ex-boyfriend whom she caught cheating with a bottle-blonde, with fake breasts and a stripper’s flexibility. There’s a disturbing possibility her eyes will never recover.

Gen needs a date for the engagement party, but finding Mr. Perfect in a time crunch is proving impossible. Just when she’s about to give up, she face-plants into the crotch of the sexiest guy she’s ever met.

Matt Sesnick is everything Gen wants in a man —except he’s not interested in a relationship. Can she convince Matt to take another shot at love, or will Gen’s pregnant, hormonal older sister, her bridezilla twin, and all of her past Mr. Wrongs get in the way of their happily-ever-after?

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

My Review: I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Another Shot at Love is a laugh out loud romantic comedy, so I advise taking your surroundings into consideration before you start reading, unless you enjoy making a spectacle of yourself. By the end of the book when Gen finally makes it to the engagement party, I was laughing so hard I could barely read. From the way Gen meets Matt to the riotous engagement party, there is never a dull moment.

I fell in love with Gen from the very beginning. She's such a caring, free-spirit, I just couldn't figure out what she was doing with a bore like Brent to begin with. She's so lucky he cheated on her or she might have married the jerk. Gen is an artist, her creative nature apparent in her appearance (pink highlights in her hair) and her overall personality. When he older sister starts fixing her up with losers, she handles it with more aplomb than I ever could. With a twin sister, an older sister, and a meddling mother, Gen has a hard time living her life without never ending drama.

Sometimes I wondered how Gen managed to deal with her female relatives without maiming one of them. Catherine, the older sister, is overbearing and refuses to take no for an answer. Twin sister Lexie is so wrapped up in her wedding plans, that are quickly spiraling out of control, to support Gen. Mom, like lots of mothers, worries that twenty-three year old Gen will never find a man. The only voice of reason, best friend Roxanna, is crazy in her own right - so basically reason flies out the window in this novel.

When Gen meets Matt, she's immediately attracted to him. They become fast friends with an obvious mutual attraction, but neither is ready for a relationship. Gen quickly realizes that she wants more from Matt, though, she's afraid to say anything to scare him away. Between dealing with two lunatic sisters, a nosy best friend, a relentless ex, and a delusional guy from work, I can't help but wonder how Gen stays sane. I loved the characters in this book, all of them. Ex-boyfriend Brent was so fun to hate. The crazy sisters were a source of constant entertainment. I can't help but wonder about Lexie. Things were falling apart with her domineering and snobby future in-laws, and fiancee Jeremy was no help. I really want to know what happens with her relationship.

If you're looking for a sweet romance, and you love to laugh (it's good for the soul), add Another Shot at Love to your TBR list.

About the Author

Niecey Roy knew she wanted to be a writer from a very young age, but her moment of enlightenment came after watching the movie You’ve Got Mail. It was then she realized her place in life, and happily parked her butt on writing romance. Her dream was to create sexy vixens, hunky, half-naked heroes, and above all, romance; lots and lots of butterflies in the belly, breathless first kisses and happily-ever-afters.

When she’s not at her day job where she works as a legal assistant, she can be found at home at a cluttered desk, pounding her tired little fingers away on a keyboard with nothing but black pepper flavored sunflower seeds and Visine as her weapons for mass-romance-novel-creation. When her fingers need a break, you’ll find her at a table with friends, drinking a few martinis and showing off a new pair of (sometimes ridiculous) high heels. She’s usually the loudest at the table and most often the one snorting with laughter.

Niecey is the author of Fender Bender Blues, a contemporary romantic comedy published by The Wild Rose Press. Her new novel to be released November 2013, Another Shot At Love, is the first novel in the What’s Love??? series.
