Together, they fight off murderous dragons and uncover sinister plans. But can they find the answers Skye so desperately seeks? And can Rowan sacrifice everything he knows to win her heart?

EXCERPT:

Skye was a coward. She knew that, but she couldn’t bring herself to stay and watch Sid and Aspen commit suicide. There was no way the council would allow Aspen to become queen.

Not to mention that then Skye would have to know the exact moment when she died, because anyone who pledged loyalty to Sid would die the second he did. No, running away was better. She should have enough time to get to her parents before death came. She’d able to say goodbye.

This was her fault. Pearl had told her to keep Aspen safe. Instead she’d gone and made everything worse. Maybe if she’d kept Aspen at home, Sid would’ve been fine.

If she’d never given Sid that damn loyalty seal, she wouldn’t be this close to death. She wasn’t sure what she was thinking at that time. Part of her thought he’d make it. Another part didn’t care whether she lived or died. It wasn’t like she’d have much of a life anymore.

When Sid became King she found Everett and begged him to remove the seal that marked how much she loved him. He did and now she longer had a swirl of gold on her ankle. But Everett warned her there would be a price to pay. She gladly paid it at the time, but but she hadn’t expected to feel so empty.

For a half second she thought about heading to Everett’s instead of her parents. Maybe he could remove the loyalty seal before she died. She shook her head. How cowardly of her. The price would not be worth it. That was for sure.

She was only fooling herself though. She would make the same decision if given the choice. Aspen was the only way they could possibly survive. When Skye dropped Aspen off , there were three possible outcomes. One, she and Sid would die and all those with loyalty seals would as well. Two, Helios, the final dragon that Sid needed to secure all the loyalty seals got to him before the council had a chance to killed him. Or three. Aspen could be become queen. She’d have to convince the council that she should be queen and pass the queen’s tests She hoped Aspen could do it.

She felt her wings tiring. This could be the beginning of her death. She hadn’t known anyone who had died because of the loyalty seal and didn’t know how it worked. She spotted a lake below her and decided to stop and get a drink. She had to make it home.

Skye landed a little rougher than normal. This had to be the end. She staggered over to the water and took a deep drink. The water sparkled under the full moon. Skye stretched her wings out and swiveled her neck around to scratch her nose. She froze. Her wing was no longer silver.

This must be part of her death. Or at least that was what she tried to convince herself of. Adrenaline coursed through her veins and she no longer felt tired. Dragons didn’t change color before they died. In fact dragons never changed color. Except when they became king. Then they turned black.

Skye spun neck around the other direction. It was more than her wings that had changed. Her whole body was now a deep coal black.

This was impossible. There was no way she could become king. Sid was king. Unless he died. Then someone else would take his place, but that someone had to be a full royal dragon and male. Of which she was neither. There had to be some huge mistake. This had to be a dream. She stuck her head in the cold water and came out again. Still black. This wasn’t possible.

Unless.

That stupid prophecy.

The one that said three kings would rise. The one that said they could come from other races. But she was still female. Something was definitely wrong. She was also still very much alive. She couldn’t go see her parents now, not like this. No, she had to go see the one dragon who could explain how this happened.

She wracked her brain trying to think of everything she’d learned about the prophecy. She loved history and so she studied a lot, but this baffled her. Nothing in the prophecy said anything about a girl. She’d spent hours listening to Everett’s boring details about the prophecy, yet he hadn’t mentioned that females could become kings. He was so in for it.

What's the Line Between Erotic Romance and Erotica by Ann Gimpel, Author of Dragon Maid

Welcome to Ann Gimpel, author of the Dragon Lore series. This is a great post on what separates erotic romance from erotica.

What’s the Line Between Erotic Romance and Erotica?

I suppose every writer has a slightly different definition, but for me one of the differences has to do with the presence (or absence) or a strong, believable plot. I see erotica as a series of sex scenes with either no plot, or a very thin one sort of tossed into the mix as an afterthought. Applying this definition, a book can have some amazingly smutty sex scenes, but still not be erotica if there’s a compelling plot that pulls the reader along. You know, something more than curiosity about what the next sex scene will look like.

I probably shouldn’t admit this, but books without plots aren’t very interesting to me. Yeah, it makes me look pretty dated, huh? Crabby, old woman who insists on books that actually have a storyline. I’ll write steamy, descriptive sex, but it has to be a normal progression of my story, not just a sex scene because we went a few hundred words without one.

Another big difference is erotica doesn’t require a HEA or HFN. All romance books do. It’s part of their timeless appeal. Digging a little deeper, for the romance genre, the romance is the story. I’ve gotten a complaint or two for some of my books that, if you took the romance away, there would still be a story. I just hang my head, blush, and mutter, “Guilty as charged.” Virtually all my books feature subplots that support the romance, but could easily exist on their own. I’m fascinated by complicated plots, different worlds, different timeframes, and mingling them into believable wholes with hot alpha men and strong, confident women.

I have several romance series, plus a bunch of standalone novellas/novels. While I enjoy series work, romance series require a new romance for each one. Hence, a new h/h combo. Sometimes, I’d prefer to write a two or three part series with the same protags. It’s actually not uncommon in urban fantasy, which is mostly what I write (with a smattering of historical tossed in).

The Dragon Lore includes an ancient, time-traveling dragon shifter who’s been asleep for three hundred years. It’s urban fantasy, but with strong romantic elements. To Love a Highland Dragon, has an HEA. The first book in that series, Highland Secrets, has a HFN. In book three, Dragon Maid, there’s yet another dragon shifter couple with an HEA. The final book in that series, Dragon’s Dare, doesn’t introduce any new major characters, but the couple from the first book finally, finally claw their way to an HEA.

There’s a time and place for every story. Erotica has an appeal, but I think it’s different from erotic romance, or the other romance genres. What do you think? Do you have a preference when you’re hunting down something new to read?

I agree-- erotica is sex with a bit of a story and erotic romance is a story with steamy sex. I'll take the romance every time :) Throw in some ghosts or shifters and I'm on cloud nine!

Tumble off reality’s edge into myth, magic, and Scottish dragon shifters

When pressed, Jonathan Shea admits magic runs through his blood, but he’s always been ambivalent about it—until a dragon and her mage show up in the Scottish Highlands, and then all bets are off. Jonathan’s charmed and captivated by the dragon—a creature fresh out of myth and legend—but the woman bonded to it is so enticing, he tosses caution aside and catapults into the magical power he’s avoided for so long.

Britta and her dragon prepare for a battle to save Earth. Freshly transplanted from a much earlier time, she feels awkward, out of place. The first person she lays eyes on is Jonathan. There’s something about him. She can’t quite pinpoint it, but he has way more magic than he lets on. Magic aside, it runs deeper than that. For the first time ever, she questions the wisdom of remaining a maid. If she doesn’t make up her mind damned fast, though, her choices will fritter away. Beset from every side, she’s never needed her magical ability more.

Surrounded by dragon shifters, Celtic gods, Selkies, time travel, and a heaping portion of magic, Jonathan comes into his own fast. Fell creatures target him, Britta, and her dragon. In the midst of chaos, he and Britta find scorching passion and love so heartbreakingly tender, it will change their lives forever.

Nature Provides Inspiration by Jan DeLima, Author of the Celtic Wolves Series + Giveaway

I'd like to extend a warm welcome to Jan DeLima, author of the Celtic Wolves series. Writers find inspiration everywhere, but we all have our favorite places. Like me, Jan finds lots of inspiration in nature.

Nature Provides Inspiration
by Jan DeLima

Thank you so much for participating in my first blog tour, and for inviting me to discuss my Celtic Wolves Series!

For those of you who aren’t familiar with my series, just imagine a world where the legends of Celtic lore still walk among us in secret.  It’s a place where warriors are also wolves and reality isn’t always what it seems.  Set in modern day, the stories are a mixture of both urban fantasy and romance.  Written for adults, each installment has strong fantasy elements built around Celtic folklore, with a secondary romance between two new characters.

Nature was, and still is, an important influence for Celts.  While my world is fictitious, the setting is very real, and I often let nature provide inspiration for my characters, as well as the environment they live in.  Celtic Moon, the first book in the series, is set in my home state of Maine, at the end of the Appalachian Trail.  Our mountain region is sometimes referred to as the Highlands of Maine, at least by romantics like me. J

When I began Summer Moon, Luc and Rosa’s story, I knew it would be set in New Hampshire, on an island surrounded by mountains and rivers—which this beautiful state has an abundance of. I’ve been for several visits and hikes, simply because I don’t like to write about an area unless I’ve experienced it firsthand. For me, writing inspiration can be found in tactile exploration, muses are fed, and any setting can be exciting when accuracy is woven within the fiction.

My inspiration for Rosa, the heroine in Summer Moon, came from one of my hikes in New Hampshire. Even though it is my neighboring state, I found slight differences. The paths were well traveled, and many of the trees had exposed roots from erosion–and I thought, “Survivors, like my heroine.” The paths were packed clay and gravel, unlike the trails around Katahdin, the setting for Celtic Moon.  Katahdin trails are less traveled and remain wild. The colors were even different, more muted. I used these differences to build the motivation and environment of the story.

They followed her through a well-traveled path colored in sepia and muted browns—not the lush emeralds, blues and golds of Rhuddin Village.
No saplings lined the forest edge, too malnourished to survive tender beginnings. Only the elder trees provided minimal shelter, with roots exposed by years of erosion. Many grew around rocks and boulders and stretched their gnarled feet into a barren forest floor—survivors, like Rosa, he realized, refusing to die under the rule of a greedy king.

Elen from Autumn Moon is my only heroine with magical abilities besides shifting into a wolf.  She can manipulate nature, and therefore surrounds herself with gardens and forests.  I’ve used my own gardens for inspiration for descriptions.

The pain was like a fistful of heated needles shoved under her skin, greater than anything Merin had ever done to Elen in her childhood. Power did not like to be contained. It wanted release. Unfortunately, her body was the vessel that held it. Her nerves screamed with its force.
Elen winced as she undid the latch of the iron gate Koko had designed for her, an intricate weave of faeries on lilies that offered both beauty and privacy. Following the stone path, she stumbled toward the hidden gardens behind her beautiful little house. She regulated her breaths through clenched teeth, much like modern childbirth techniques.
With a broken moan of relief, after a day full of suspicious glances and avoidance from the villagers, Elen finally allowed the power to consume her. She collapsed in a bed of anise hyssop and let its vengeful pressure bleed from her skin and into the ground. Purple flowers bloomed around her and a licorice scent filled the air like a basketful of candy, offering treats and bellyaches of a more noxious variety.
The villagers thought she was this power-hungry freak, when in fact she was only a conductor, a mere rod of transference. She was a puppet of a merciless master, no more in control now than when it had first begun, when the gods had reached out their hands of vengeance with their unwanted gift.

The following photo is a bed of anise hyssop in my garden, similar to what Elen would have fallen into.  It has a strong black licorice scent and bees love it.

And so I shall end with the bane of my garden: poison ivy.  I’ve had to do full rounds of antibiotics twice because of this toxic plant.  It surrounds my yard and keeps trying to creep in.  Like many authors, experiences in life can influence my writing.  These are the very first lines of Autumn Moon, although what’s creeping in is far more dangerous than poison ivy.

It crept from the forest under a blanket of morning mist. Elen felt its approach like a brush of poison ivy across her skin, smooth to the touch until its toxins seeped in.

“Leaves of three, let them be.”  To be sure!  Some people are lucky enough not to be allergic, but I am not one of them.  There are quite a lot of harmless plants that grow with “three leaves.”  But notice the extra “thumbs” on two of the leaves.  That’s how you can identify poison ivy if you’re ever on a hike looking for inspiration.  I just took the above photo, but it will be obnoxiously beautiful come autumn, turning shades of bright orange and gold.

Thank you again for inviting me to discuss some of my inspirations!

Julia is happy with her place in the shifter community as the owner of the famous shifter bar, The Backwater. Only a born shifter mate is good enough for her girls.

Thomas James has his hands full as the shifter king's head of security. He certainly wasn’t looking for a girlfriend during the first annual shifter gathering. He had the king and queen to protect, not skirts to chase.

Excerpt

Prologue- The Plan

Only the birds singing and the leaves ruffling in the breeze shared Emma’s solitude. Reverently, she knelt before the dais constructed for John’s conversion. As part of its preparation, she had taken her daily meditation time at its base.
Closing her eyes and lifting her hands in supplication, she began to pray. “Mother Luperca, I ask that you bless this holy site and give it your approval.”
As she knelt quietly, a soft voice greeted her, “Beloved daughter, I give this site my approval. All is prepared for my newest son, John, to join my family.”
“May I also inquire about my unmated sons?”
“You ask about your sons, but that is not what I feel in your heart. Your true concern is for Thomas, and the plan I have for him.”
“If it pleases you, may I be honored with the knowledge of your plan?”
“Thomas is destined to be Julia’s mate.”
“How may I be of assistance in bringing this mating to fruition?”
“Julia will attend the gathering. Ensure that they meet.”
“Thank you, Mother. How may I be of further service?”
“Your daily worship pleases me well, child. You do enough. Blessed be.”
“Blessed be, Mother.”
Emma completed her prayers and final preparations, excited to tell Isaac her news.

*****
Isaac sat in his office responding to emails from the other pack patriarchs. The gathering was shaping up to be a complete success with every family in the region attending.
“Isaac! Isaac, where are you, cher?” Emma called through the house.
“In here, mon amour.”
“I can’t believe it!” Emma perched in the chair opposite him. “The Goddess has given me the next mate.”
“Who?” he asked excitedly. “Lucas? Marcus?”
Emma leaned toward him and whispered her incredible secret. “Thomas.”
“No! How?”
“Julia.” Emma clapped excitedly. “She’s his mate.”
“I never saw that coming.” Isaac laughed.
“That’s why he isn’t being converted with John.”
Isaac nodded. “He’ll be converted by Julia during the ritual.”
“The Goddess told me Julia will attend the gathering, and our job is to ensure they meet.”
“All right,” Isaac grinned, “that should be easy enough. I’ll keep tabs on Thomas, and you watch Julia. If they don’t meet on their own, one of us will make sure they are introduced.”

Review: Dragons Are People, Too by Sarah Nicolas + Giveaway

Dragons Are People, Too

Sarah Nicolas

YA Urban Fantasy
Entangled Teen
April 28, 2015

Never judge a dragon by her human cover...

Sixteen-year-old Kitty Lung has everyone convinced she’s a normal teen—not a secret government operative, not the one charged with protecting the president’s son, and certainly not a were-dragon. The only one she trusts with the truth is her best friend—and secret crush—the über-hot Bulisani Mathe.

Then a junior operative breaks Rule Number One by changing into his dragon form in public—on Kitty’s watch—and suddenly, the world knows. About dragons. About the Draconic Intelligence Command (DIC) Kitty works for. About Kitty herself.

Now the government is hunting down and incarcerating dragons to stop a public panic, and a new shape-shifting enemy has kidnapped the president’s son. Kitty and Bulisani are the last free dragons, wanted by both their allies and their enemies. If they can’t rescue the president’s son and liberate their fellow dragons before getting caught themselves, dragons might never live free again.

I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review

I love dragons, and the idea of dragon shifters is awesome. Put dragon in the title, and I'm bound to read it sooner or later. Dragons Are People, Too is a fast-paced thrill ride featuring a sixteen-year-old dragon working for a secret government organization of dragon shifters.

I really liked Kitty. She was so tough, having trained for her job since she was four. But she also showed emotion and weakness at times which made her seem real. Kitty was a Chinese dragon, but her organization also had African and English dragons. Seriously, dragons galore in this novel. I found the romantic interest, Bulisani (great name BTW) quite intriguing. Definitely some diversity in this read with the female lead a Chinese dragon, and the romantic interest an African dragon.

I enjoyed the author's writing style-- lots of shorter sentences during the action scenes led to more tension. And there were some great action scenes. I also appreciated the fast pace. In addition, the romance, though built slowly, was rather sweet once it got going. Not so thrilled about the lack of ending, but series are so popular nowadays, and it's really hard to have a concrete ending between books. So just keep that in mind if you hate non-endings.

Overall, this is a fun, high-action story, with great characters and a sweet romance. Perfect for a YA audience.
