Excerpt:

“Follow me, kid.” She led him down a gray hallway with mulberry-colored carpet, more plush than anything he’d ever seen in a governmental office. The place had to be a city block wide, with corridors branching off to other conduits. Here and there, a doorway opened. Wes saw that many were filled with groups of people sitting at polished conference tables. Some rooms were dark, with shades drawn, the light of a presentation on screens peeking through the slats of the blinds. Staff walked through the hallways, nodding to each other. Some were in pairs. All had a badge hanging on a chain or attached to a pocket. He squinted, but he couldn’t make out the impression on the shield. Forget about attempting to read it. He shrugged; while it looked official, it was unfamiliar. For a person who grew up with an entire family in law enforcement, he found it odd that he’d never seen it before.

“What is this place?” he asked.

“This is where the magic happens,” she told him cryptically.

She opened the door, whispering, “Prepare to be amazed.” Then, with a giant pop of her gum, she disappeared.

“Where…” Wes turned, looking for the woman, but couldn’t see her anywhere. “Where is…”

“Oh, she’s gone. Come in already,” a male voice ordered impatiently.

Wes spun to the speaker, his eyes settling on a small man seated at a glass desk. He was in a neat gray suit but wore a black turtleneck, which made him look like some odd, eccentric leftover from the beatnik generation. He was older than Wes’s father, Wes guessed somewhere north of sixty, with the thickening middle of a sedentary life, a tanned complexion, and silver hair. His chubby face sported a neatly trimmed goatee. Wes wondered where his beret might be. The man studied Wes with interested black eyes that glowed with merriment.

“What kind of department is this?”

“Mr. Wesley Paul Rockville. Son of Harris and Melinda, brother to Lauren and Andrew. Tough act to follow. Runt of the litter?”

Wes bristled, wondering where this pint-size dude got off calling him a runt. At six foot three, he was hardly considered small. “I fail to see what this has got to do with my reassignment,” he said icily.

The older man ignored him. “The young gun who had his free will sucked right out of him.”

“No one took my free will!” Wes shouted, his face hot.

“I think Miss Genevieve Fox did a pretty nice number on you.”

“What are you talking about?”

Alastair cocked his head, a smile playing on his lips.

“I don’t think this is funny, um…Alastair. I’m getting out of here.”  Wes had had enough. He was pissed and hungry.

“Sit down, Agent Rockville. It’s time you learned about your new assignment.”

Review: I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

First things first, Kaitlin's Tale is a companion novel for the Cassie Scot series. If you haven't read it, I suggest you start there. It is truly a wonderful series.

Top 5 Reasons You Should Read Kaitlin's Tale

Kaitlin - I loved Kaitlin-- how she fought for her son and how she grew throughout the story. She is one kickass character.

Nonstop, Edge-of-Your-Seat Pace - Never a dull moment. In fact I couldn't seem to read this one fast enough.

Return of Beloved Characters - I loved seeing this side of Matthew. What happened to Jason- well that made me quite sad. But it was so nice to read about the characters from Cassie Scot again.

The Plot - I really enjoyed the plot for this companion story. I always liked Kaitlin and was excited to read a story about her. The plot was exciting and interesting, and it offered new insight into Ms. Amsden's urban fantasy world.

Writing Style - I always get lost in Ms. Amsden's books. She has a way of writing that flows so smoothly it draws the reader into the story with effortless grace.

I really enjoyed Kaitlin's Tale. It was an amazing follow-up to the series.

Review: I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review

Frog Hollow is an intriguing urban fantasy/paranormal with an unusual premise and some fun characters. I love small towns filled with quirky folk, especially if they have a paranormal aspect. This novel has great characters in spades!

What I Liked
-I loved the voice of main character Willa. I was sucked in immediately by her charm and snarkiness. Willa stood up for herself, and even though her life had not been an easy one, was willing to rise to the occasion when needed. And with that, I also liked the author's writing style-- fluid and graceful making for an enjoyable read.
-The town was so much fun. I loved all of the characters and the interactions. Seriously, there's never a dull moment there.
-The descriptions were so vivid and captured all of the senses which really drew me into the story.

What I Didn't Like as Much
-The novel starts out with a brisk pace, but then seems to drag a bit toward the middle. There were times I caught myself skimming so much that I had to go back to reread something I missed.
-The ending was bittersweet but was also one I expected from almost the beginning of the book. In fact, I remember thinking just a few chapters or so in, "I wonder if she's going to do that..."

Overall I really enjoyed this story. I adored Willa and loved seeing her connect with her new family.

- EXCERPT -

It’s pitch dark. Nothing but streetlamps light our march down the sidewalk. I constantly stumble to keep up with Reid’s long strides. It’s not because I’m staring at his ass in those jeans.

Definitely not that.

He pulls me down an alleyway that is lit only by the dim lamps hanging over the doorways. “My car is that way,” I say, pointing in the opposite direction.

“I’ll get it later.” He pushes forward down the alley, never bothering to look back.

We come out on another street where he stands looking up and down the block before motioning for me to follow him across the road. I still look twice each way even though the street is deserted. He waits next to a double-cab, gray truck. He flings the passenger side door open and pushes me inside.

“Where are we going?”

He ignores me, slamming the door in my face. Once he’s in the driver’s seat, I shoot him a dirty look. “Where are we going?” I ask again, this time hissing out the words.

“I thought maybe we’d go to your house, let you hit me over the head again.” He glares over at me, gesturing toward his wound. “You know, to even it out, because I think it looks pretty stupid lopsided like this.”

“Smartass.” I throw myself back into the seat and cross my arms as he backs out of the parking space. “No wonder you’re single.”

He stops momentarily in the middle of the street with his hand on the gearshift, waiting to push it into drive. “What?”

“I said you’re such a charmer.”

He scowls at me. His pissed off face is growing on me. I grin back. With one swift jerk of his hand, the truck is in gear and we zoom down the back street. I fumble to find my seat belt. My hands tremble as I click it into place.

We are already on the road leading out of town when I look back out the window, watching the lights from downtown fade out of sight. His eyes fixated on the road, his fingers running along the side of the steering wheel like he’s in a hurry.

“Where are we going?” I ask, this time in a whisper, avoiding eye contact.

I know it’s silly, because we just left a room full of witnesses, but I can’t stop picturing myself being thrown into a swamp full of snapping alligators like I’m Indiana Jones on my last crusade.

“You wanted this.” Attention straight on the road, he refuses to look at me. “So, we’ve got some things to straighten out.”

It’s vague, but at least it’s an answer. However, I doubt he’d actually tell me if he planned to feed me to alligators.

That would probably be counterproductive to his mission.

I lean back in my seat and breathe, assuring myself that just because he wants me to leave town doesn’t mean he wants me dead. I become slightly less panicked when we pull into the driveway leading down to my house. The sound of the gravel is noisy as we skid into place just behind the trailer. He jumps out of the truck before I even notice that he cut off the ignition. I scurry out, following him up the walk. He fumbles with his key in the lock.

“Hey!” I peek over his shoulder and scowl. “You’ve got to stop doing that.”
“Why?” He glares back, pushing the door open. “You’ve got a flashlight in your purse?”

I stomp in behind him. “You can’t just come in anytime you feel like it. I appreciate you taking care of the house, but it’s mine now.”

He stops in the middle of the room, and I stumble into his back. He turns around slowly, looking down at me. The house is dark; only the light of the moon shines through the windows highlighting his face. He’s close. He could touch me if he wanted. It would make sense. His palm under my elbow, or his fingers against my waist.

Except he doesn’t.

“Fiona gave me this key when I was ten years old,” he whispers in the small space between us. “Everyone in our family has a key to this house.”

I want to snap back at him, but I don’t know if I’m actually mad about the key or something else. I take a step back, and this time I look away. “I don’t know how families work.”

I shouldn’t be embarrassed. I’ve been an orphan for the better part of my life. I still can’t look him in the eye.

“There is a blue cookie jar on the top shelf of your cabinet,” he says, pointing behind me.
I follow his finger to the kitchen cabinets and then turn back to him. “Go look in it.”

I walk by him, dodging boxes along the way until I open the cabinet doors. In the very last one I see a chipped, blue jar stuck in the back corner. I climb up on the counter to reach it. I grab it, sitting down so I can hold it more securely. I glance at Reid, standing at the counter’s edge watching me, before I stick my hand inside. My fingers hit metal, and I can tell by the jingling sound it makes that the jar is full of keys. “Mine is the one with the giant R painted on it,” he says, crossing his arms. “Feel free to break in anytime.”

I clamp the lid shut. “You don’t mean that.”

He shrugs. “You’re right, I don’t. But I’m keeping my key.”

Apprentice witch Catalina Gato is prohibited from assuming her human form in front of her new employer without his express permission. Since he doesn’t know he’s a warlock, he can’t give it, leaving her in a familiar’s limbo. To make matters worse, she’s barred from leaving his house, and her attempts to enlighten him of his true nature results in burnt notes, charred walls, and exploding laptops.

On All Hallows’ Eve, she gets one night of freedom. Deciding some no-strings-attached sex might take the edge off the intense attraction she feels for her clueless boss, she signs up for Madame Eve’s service. When she meets her masked mystery date at the Castillo Capital, she realizes she might have gotten much more than she bargained for.

After being gifted a one-night stand from his annoying best friend, attorney Leo Difuoco reluctantly ventures to the Castillo Capital to celebrate Halloween. When he meets his oddly familiar green-eyed date in a Cat Woman costume, flames literally ignite, sparks magically fly, and life as he knows it changes forever.

My Review: I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review

Flirting With Fire is a fun novella featuring a clueless warlock and the sassy familiar he inherited from his great aunt. Poor Cat is trapped in her cat form whenever she is in a ten foot radius from her new master. To make matters worse, she is a prisoner in the house without his express permission to leave.

Halloween is Cat's one night off, when she can roam in her human form away from her posh prison. Instead of confronting her master, Cat lets her younger sister convince her that she needs one night of sex more than freedom. Leo, the clueless warlock, allows his best friend to fix him up on a no-strings-attached one night stand for Halloween. You can see where this is going, right??

Anyway, sparks fly, literally. What do you expect from an untrained warlock? The story is short, quick, and right to the point. I liked Cat, at least as far as I got to know her. She's an interesting character, and I'd love to read more about her. I enjoyed the scenes between Leo and Cat (in cat form), they were quite adorable. Leo seems rather clueless and sweet, though we really don't get to know much about him. Cute story with a rather steamy elevator scene. I hope the author writes more about these characters.

Casual Curses & Meticulous Magic by Lee Roland - Excerpt & Review

Casual Curses & Meticulous Magic
The Gramarye Series Book 1

Lee Roland

Urban Fantasy/Paranormal Romance
Highland Press
September 24, 2014
Cover Artist: Iris Hunter

What happens when a dysfunctional witch and a tough PI work together to save an aging apartment house filled with ghosts, dragons and one oversexed house plant?
Spirits, spells and mayhem…Magic rises in the Gramarye

Melian Devlin is a witch who often resorts to exotic and slightly illegal methods of acquiring money to maintain the 300-year-old Gramarye, the stone apartment house that’s her heart and home. Her life is a series of skirmishes that occasionally end with her behind bars.

Titus Moran is a no-nonsense PI who makes big bucks busting insurance fraud schemes.  So how did he wind up in a tortuous battle to keep Melian out of jail?  Did the delightful young witch with her gray eyes and magic at her fingertips enchant him—or does the Gramarye hold greater mysteries.

Titus will enter a new exciting world when he joins Melian in her quest to save the Gramarye.  Melian will fumble along in her usual impulsive way, leaving a trail of disasters behind her.   If they’re lucky, they might survive.

Excerpt

Melian Devlin considered her arrest late Friday evening an ill omen, a portent of dire thingsto come. At the very least, it would ruin her weekend. Her bad luck had continued after her arrest when she’d found herself standing before Judge Franklin P.O. Merkle. Merkle’s exact words were, “You again?”
He’d set her bail at an obscene five thousand dollars.
Psychic readings weren’t illegal in the City of Ashburn, Florida, but selling magic potions  skirted the legal line of medicine, hence her arrest. And then there was the sticky issue of not having a business license—again. Minor infractions. So why did Merkle have such a burr up his ass? Maybe because he was working late on Friday? The malicious cop with an aversion to psychics hadn’t helped either.
Standing behind bars at ten o’clock that night, listening to her Great Uncle Will royally chew her butt, confirmed Mel’s dismal assessment of the situation.
“Psychic?” Will’s deep voice rumbled the word. His tired eyes watched her from a weather worn face. “Mel, honey, you ain’t no psychic. You’re a witch. You’re supposed to use magic.”
He shook his head. “I understand why you can’t get a regular job, but can’t you find something irregular you’re good at? Or at least something legal?” He glanced over his shoulder and pitched his voice lower. “You should’ve marked a cop soon as he walked in the door, then spelled him out of making an arrest. You’re allowed basic self-defense. I taught you that.”
Mel winced at Uncle Will’s words. He had taught her. She was simply incredibly incompetent at casting spells and making potions, and utterly terrified of making a mistake. What if she hurt someone? Pretending to be a psychic and selling a few harmless herbal elixirs was easier—and safer.
They’d put her in a simple holding cell inside the precinct station after she’d seen the judge. The arrangement gave detainees a chance to post bail before they moved them to the main jail downtown, something Mel had hoped to avoid. Prospects didn’t look good.

The sparse cell had a single bench bolted to the floor and air filled with the odor of acrid, nose-searing bleach. Her cellmates, two tough prostitutes, sat on the bench staring straight at the wall. Imperfect witch she might be, but she could still deal with the bullying they tried when she first came in.
“Will, please,” Mel begged. “Go talk to Milo for me. Give him an IOU. I’ll get the money some way.” Milo the Bail Bondsman, her father’s second cousin, usually handled her bail. Milo hadn’t returned any of her numerous calls.
“Yeah. Sure.” Will laughed, but it didn’t sound funny. “Gettin’ money some way is what landed you here. I can hear Milo now. Cousin Melian? She told my Granny Panopoulos to put all her money on a horse named Show-Too in the third race and—”
“I told her thirty dollars to show on the number three horse, not… Oh, hell.” She wrapped her hands around the bars to steady herself.
Granny Panopoulos had cried to Mel about not being able to pay her mortgage and buy food in the same month. She figured Granny could lose thirty dollars and learn an excellent lesson about the futility of gambling. How was Mel to know the woman had fifty thousand dollars tucked in her mattress and a persistent bookie looking over her shoulder? Oh, right, she was supposed to be a psychic.
“Okay, girl, here’s the deal.” Will shoved his hands in his pockets like he always did when he had to deliver bad news. “I’ll get you out on Monday—” “Monday?”
“Yep. I’m not going to call Milo on a Friday evening or ruin his weekend. And I don’t trust anyone else.” Will’s head bobbed. His sorrowful expression tore at her. His eyes remained bright and his mind-dagger sharp, but time had worn his aging body. He loved her, and she shouldn’t have troubled him.
“Ya’ know Mel...” He sighed. “Honey, you’re twenty-seven years old. Couple of days and nights in jail won’t hurt. ‘Bout time you learned a lesson. Past time, in fact. While you’re there, think about having to stay longer, what might happen then.” He turned and shuffled out of the room.
Mel leaned her forehead against the cold hard bars. What a stinking mess. She wasn’t a true psychic, but the power, the magic she lived by, occasionally gave her glimpses into the situations surrounding people. A haphazard thing she couldn’t control, but between it and the potions, she made a little money—as long as some cop with an attitude didn’t arrest her.
Mel had paid little attention when the nervous young man with dark, curly hair entered her low-rent storefront room four hours ago. He had a sweet, shy smile and almost pretty face. Not a hint of a cop in him. He paid her forty dollars for a reading and asked her if he would ever find true love. His precise words. “True love.” That alone should have tipped her off. She felt sorry for him and tried to sell him a magic potion. Only a twenty-dollar mixture of Vitamin B and Ginseng, but with the power of suggestion, it might be enough to adjust his outlook on life. He was far too good-natured and attractive to be alone. Then his partner had charged in and gleefully busted her. It didn’t take much to make some cops happy.

My Review: I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review

Sometimes I'm just in the mood for a fun, lighthearted read. Casual Curses & Meticulous Magic fit the bill perfectly. This is one of those books that will make you smile, laugh, and just make your day a touch lighter.

Mel was wild, unpredictable, and completely devoted to the Gramarye and its tenants. Money was hard to come by thanks to her uncle, forcing her to resort to some shady dealings to get by. She made me laugh, and I found myself liking her immediately, despite the fact she was in jail. Mel is as adorable and quirky as her tenants in the Gramarye.

Romantic interest Titus, or Tiger as Mel likes to call him, was sweet and rather charming. He was quick to jump to Mel's aid and defense once he learned magic was real and not Mel's delusion. The romance between the two was also rather sweet. I hope we get more insight into his past in future books.

The secret world of magic and witches was intriguing, though with someone like Mel, I wonder how they managed to keep it a secret. I loved the large cast of secondary characters, from ghosts to a poetic demon to a man-hungry plant. These characters made the book so much fun and quite interesting as well. Though book one in a series, this novel had a most satisfying ending. I'm really looking forward to reading more about the Gramarye and the intriguing cast of characters.

Rehab for Witches: an Anthology- Author Guest Post & Review

Rehab is for Witches Anthology

Various Authors
Published By- SideStreet Cookie Publishing
Publication Date- October 31st, 2014

Welcome to Little Raven: an unsullied, beautiful woodland hamlet in the heart of the Midwest. The sort of place where furry creatures romp about and spend their days bursting into song.
Actually, that’s a giant pack of lies.
Little Raven is a town…for witches.
And some of those witches might have bent the rules. A teensy bit. When six magical miscreants dabble with black magic, they end up together at Incantations, the town’s rehab center for witches gone awry. It’s a slap on the wrist for naughty witches. Pretty much a daycare center so they don’t wander off and start turning people into newts on a whim. Each witch must work through her addiction to black magic, and follow the tenets designed to lead them back to the path of the straight and narrow, as boring as that sounds. Even if following the tenets sucks worse than a group round of kum-bay-ya. Which sucks. Horribly.
We will admit we are powerless over magic—that our lives have become unmanageable.
We will make a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of the Goddess as we understand Her.
We will make a searching and fearless moral and magical inventory of ourselves.
We will admit to the Goddess, to ourselves, and to another being the exact nature of our magical wrongs.
We will make a list of all persons or beings we have harmed, and become willing to make amends to them all.
We will make direct amends to such beings whenever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.
We are entirely ready to bow before the Goddess and have Her remove all our defect of character, even at the risk of being entirely stripped of our magic.
But this is just the start. There’s something rotten in Little Raven, something that seeks to take all the magic it can, and devour the inhabitants in the process. It will take the strength and power of all the witches to defeat the darkness seeping into their town, beat it back, and be rid of it forever…and maybe just make it through rehab while they’re saving the world.

Author Tara S. Wood's Top 5 Favorite Things

Hmmm…this is a hard one.
1.    Books. Of course. I am a reader and a writer. I love all types of books. Fiction. Non-fiction, biographies…the whole kit and kaboodle. There’s something magical that happens between the pages of a book, and it’s a feeling I’ve never quite gotten over. And all kinds, too. Print, ebook, audio. Just bring me a book. And a nice cup of tea.

2.    Anything British. I am an unashamed Anglophile. There is a tiny Union Jack flying in my heart at all times. Visiting the UK is on my bucket list, and I’m fairly certain that if I was given the opportunity to emigrate, I would take it.

3.    Cooking. I love to cook. I love to feed people. It is a tangible expression of love. And if  you leave my house hungry, it’s your own fault.

4.    My circle of writing friends. It’s taken a bit to cultivate them (if I could grow them in a greenhouse, I would), but I’ve managed to garner the love and support of a fair few talented people who are simply wonderful. A few of them have even burrowed so far into my heart they’ve become family. Literary brothers and sisters who make this journey worthwhile. They are truly amazing.

5.    The untold story. Not a thing, per se, but a concept. One that keeps me going. This fevered little brain of mine is constantly dreaming up tales. I have a to-be-written list that rivals U.S. tax law, both in its length and complexity. My estimate is that I will be finished with writing all of them twelve years after I’m dead.

My Review: I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review

Rehab for Witches is a rather unusual, yet intriguing anthology in style and substance. Here's a quote from the beginning of the book with an explanation:

This book doesn’t stick to time as though it was a Velcro. It moves in the same direction, but it flits back and forth, because this is a journey of six witches aiming to get through magical rehab. So it’ll follow all on them on their journeys…and then the journey they take together. So sometimes you’ll go back, and sometimes you’ll go forwards. We guess that’s just the nature of magic. You’ll get the hang of it.

That sums it up much better than I could. I was a tad worried that it would be disjointed, but it wasn't. In fact, the different stories and different voices made for a more compelling read. I enjoyed all of the stories, though a couple times I didn't want to leave the character and move to another since I developed a bit of an attachment.

The anthology follows six misguided, miscreant witches in rehab. All had done some bad things with their magic and were being punished as a result. I enjoyed these characters- enjoyed reading about their past deeds and rehabilitation. The anthology is also full of swoon-worthy men, who make the misguided witches hearts beat faster... I think there's a spell for that...

Overall, this is a fun, fast-paced read. If you like paranormal stories, especially ones about witches walking the line between light and dark, be sure to check out Rehab for Witches.
