EXCERPT:
The sun was beginning to set and the bright day had begun to dissipate as dusk slowly fell over the Culver Hills village center, if one could really call it a village in the middle of Los Angeles. The air grew dense and musty. All the street lamps were off except one, which flickered in a slow, steady beat. Only a small number of cars cruised the road as the kids walked down Main Street toward where the Foxworthy Hotel was perched at the top of the hill. This dark stillness was not usual for this time of day. Something was off.

“Get off me!” The voice filled Isabella’s ear a block away from the hotel trolley stop. Her gut tore in two with fear. ”Give that back.”

Isabella slowed down to see Cleo marching back toward the same two bullies she’d rescued Pythian from the other day, one of whom had Xander by the shirt collar as the other was rummaging through Xander’s backpack. Cleo’s shoes lay in a clump.

“There are so many goodies in here. Gum drops. Chocolate snatches. Debbie cakes. And my personal favorite—this camcorder. Oh, wait… no. There’s a little digital camera, too. Looks like Christmas came early for us. Isn’t that right, Sloane?”

“Put my brother down, or you’ll be sorry,” Cleo shouted.

As requested, the boy shoved Xander, sending him tumbling into a nearby thorn bush. “Ahhrrk!”

Cleo went straight to his side.

It looked like the kid with Xander’s backpack might consider going for Cleo’s purse, but before that could happen, the other boy, Sloane, said, “Dude, let’s get outta here.” Seth, who was bigger and taller than both of them, and Isabella, whose nostrils flared like a lion, hustled after them.

“I know those guys,” Isabella told Seth.

“Go back and stay with Cleo,” he said.

“Watch me, Superman.”

They looped around the corner as the bullies flew up the service road that led to the back of the hotel. Before they could get too far, four figures in black appeared; from where, Isabella could not tell. Two grabbed the boys. Another took Xander’s backpack. Seth and Isabella both stopped. Cold licked Isabella’s heart. Not an eerie cold, but like a soothing glass of cold lemonade on a scorching day in July.

“What do we do?” Isabella whispered.

“I would tell you to go back, but you’d just make too much noise arguing with me, so I say just shut up.”

“If you tell me to shut up one more time…”

“Not now.”

“Right.”

The two figures holding the boys seemed to melt into the darkness of the trees.

“Where the hell did they go?” Seth asked, protectively pushing Isabella behind him.

She did not fight it. She was starting to become frightened, less of the situation and more of herself. Things had been off more than usual today. For the first time since her parents’ death, she’d felt completely protected, and she wasn’t sure it was all due to the necklace she had been wearing. It was so bizarre.

She was attuned to Cleo and Xander, who were usually never around at the holidays because, like her friend Lana, their parents traveled at that time. She’d felt everything from them: Xander’s exhaustion; Cleo’s boredom and overprotectiveness of her brother. The Logan brothers, however, were different. One minute, she felt Micah’s agitation with Xander, but the next, it would grow cold. And Seth—that boy, she couldn’t get a handle on at all. The only thing she got a sense of was fierce protection, particularly for Micah, but for her as well. She really did not know why.

That was never part of it; she had never felt the direction of a person’s emotions until now. She’d never felt so hot and cold about it. The five of them, connected by a string. It made no sense. Why would she be connected to these random kids?

The two figures in black who had stayed behind whispered to each other. Seth stepped to the side, taking Isabella with him. ”We should go back.”

But he was too late. The men had spotted them and were heading their way. Neither Seth nor Isabella dared to move. In an instant, the tallest of the figures, a young man of about twenty, stood before them. His skin was a beautiful caramel color, his eyes a startling green, and his hair—Isabella saw, as he pushed the hood off his head, he had a nest of shiny curls. He wore a goatee, and his eyes drooped with intellect.

“Declan Timothy. This is Max.” He thumbed at the guy behind him. “Just wanted to give this back to the kid.”

He pushed the backpack into Isabella’s arms. Her vocal cords decided to twist into a knot, so she was unable to say thank you.

“And to tell you to be careful. Tonight is going to change things for you.”

That did it. No more evil cats holding her tongue hostage. “What the heck does that mean?”

“You’ll see. If you need us, ask Theophilus where to find us.”

“Wait a minute,” Seth said, pinning Declan with a heated gaze. “Who are you guys?”

“The Midnight Brotherhood. Be careful, Isabella. And you—make sure she listens.”

“Sure,” Seth replied.

Then they, too, faded into the night.

Seth and Isabella looked at each other, not saying a word. For some reason, words did not seem appropriate at that moment.

When they returned to their friends, Seth spoke quietly as Isabella returned Xander’s backpack to him. “Let’s go home.”

The trolley was nowhere in sight, which was more evidence to Isabella that something was not right. From the bottom of the hill, the hotel was as dim and desolate as it had appeared from the center of the village. With heavy legs, they began up the hill. They climbed the front steps and walked into the lobby. Candlelight dotted the room. Elyse was the first person to approach them; her waitress apron was undone, her hair out of place.

“Thank God you’re all right.”

“What’s going on?” Isabella asked.

“I…” Elyse burst into tears.

“Elyse, tell us now! What happened?”

Elyse wiped her face. “I don’t really know. Everything blacked out for a while. It went cold, and I got really tired. It almost felt like I fell asleep for a while, but then when I woke up, I was standing in the same place I had been before. Right inside the Lily Field ballroom. And then—”

The Divide by E.J. Mellow - Interview & Giveaway

Welcome to E.J. Mellow, author of The Divide! Today we have an interview with E.J. and Dev- the leading man from The Divide.

KIMBER LEIGH: Thanks so much for joining me today EJ and Dev! I’m so excited to have the author and her leading dreamboat character sitting down with me today.

(EJ eyes Dev from the side as he smirks in his chair)

EJ: You probably could have left out dreamboat.

DEV: But it was the best part of that sentence.

EJ: I know better than to engage further in this. Sorry to interrupt, Kimber. You can keep going.

(Kimber smiles)

KIMBER: No problem at all. I was wondering if you could each share three interesting things about each other.

EJ: Oh boy. Are they meant to be complimentary?

DEV: Ha—Ha. You’re a comedian today, EJ, I’ll go first, since I know you’ll need the extra time to sift through all my amazing facts.

(Dev pats EJ on the knee)

DEV: Okay, number one, she’s a horrible speller—

EJ: Hey!

DEV: Number two, she likes it super warm in her office when she’s writing.

EJ: I like to be cozy.

DEV: Cozy—In all of Terra, it’s a sauna in there! I mean, I can feel it through the pages.

EJ: Well, maybe that’s why I can write you so steamy.

(Dev snorts out a laugh)

DEV: We all know I don’t need help in the steam department.

EJ: Oh Lord.

DEV: And number three would have to be that the song, If I Could Turn Back Time by Cher, gets stuck in her head way more than what’s probably healthy. She sings it at least twice a day and has annoyingly passed the habit to me. The only good thing is that it now drives Aveline crazy.

(EJ starts humming, If I Could Turn Back Time)

DEV: Don’t start!

(Kimber laughs)

KIMBER: Well, those are definitely facts you learn after hanging out with someone as much as you two do. EJ, what are three interesting things about Dev?

EJ: The first is that he never listens to my story outline. Sometimes I don’t even know why I bother with them when he’s involved.

DEV: Because you secretly love when I walk outside the lines.

(EJ glances at him sideways)

EJ: The second is probably that he has a sweet tooth. I always pictured him more of a salty man over a savory, but he loves his candy.

DEV: Holding back so many comments to that one.

(EJ rolls her eyes)

EJ: And the third is that he can surprisingly whistle really well. But like…really well. I made him listen to Bohemian Rhapsody once and he whistled the whole thing back perfectly.

DEV: It’s all about lip placement

(He winks at Kimber).

EJ: I can’t bring you anywhere.

KIMBER: Well, I love it all. Those facts were so fun to hear. Thank you E.J. and Dev for doing this.

EJ: Thank you so much for having us!

DEV: Are those pastries over there?

(EJ smacks Dev’s shoulder)

DEV: Ow, what was—? Oh, yes thank you.

(Kimber holds back a laugh)

KIMBER: You’re welcome. And for all those who stopped by for the interview, thanks for joining us!

Floor 21 by Jason Luthor

Welcome to Jason Luthor, author of Floor 21, to tell us a bit more about the story.

FLOOR 21 happened by accident. I had previously written two books, neither of them great. I had an agent in L.A. who told me I was great at building worlds but my characters didn’t pop or stand out. So, November 2014, it’s NaNoWriMo, I’m watching Walking Dead, and this interesting moment happens. There’s this young teen girl trying to escape a hospital by lowering herself down an elevator shaft. I’m watching this, then I have an idea:

What if the horror was on ground level, but nobody had been back to the ground in centuries?

That’s what inspired the book. I opened up a Word document, started typing in a first person narrative from the perspective of a teenage girl, and put out about five pages of it to a writing group. Response? People go nuts about it. So I think with it. I think after years of writing, feedback from my agent, and just tons of practice, I finally nailed the balance between world building and character.

The book itself follows a headstrong girl named Jackie, whose life is lead from a position of privilege inside of an isolated apartment tower. The occupants live on the top 21 levels, and going any lower is forbidden. Nobody has seen ground, or knows why they got trapped up here, but they know there’s a living sickness known as the Creep that reacts to negative human emotions and will attack or kill people further down the tower. Teams, known as Scavengers, are sent out every three months to scavenge the lower floors for food. Not all of them make it back.

Jackie has two questions: Who is running things from the top floor (where nobody is allowed to go), and what’s beneath the 21st floor? The book tries to combine a kind of slice-of-life story that portrays Jackie as a pretty imperfectly perfect teenager who has trouble relating to people, bouts of mild anxiety and depression, but also this bravery to explore where nobody else will.

The greatest response I’ve had to the book has been how much people like Jackie and the characters. That would never have happened a few years ago, when I was still struggling to portray these people as interesting, engaging individuals. So, I’m glad that people are not only fascinated by the world of the tower, but also by Jackie.

As humanity lives out the remainder of its existence at the top of an isolated apartment tower, young Jackie dares to question Tower Authority and their ban on traveling into the tower's depths. Intelligent and unyielding, Jackie ventures into the shadows of the floors below. But will her strong will and refusal to be quiet—in a society whose greatest pride is hiding the past—bring understanding of how humanity became trapped in the tower she has always called home, or will it simply be her undoing?

Soldiers of the Craft by K.E. Moody - Author Interview & Giveaway

Welcome to K.E. Moody, author of Soldiers of the Craft

Interview with K.E. Moody

At what point in your life did you realize that you wanted to be a writer?  I’ve always enjoyed writing, but I started writing seriously when I found out I was pregnant.  I wanted to document everything about my experience and it ended up growing into a big beast after a while.  My style had always mostly been satirical and funny.  I found I was pretty good at telling short stories, so I wanted to try for a longer one and one that wasn’t a comedy.

Who is your favorite character in Soldiers of the Craft? And why?  I love Farrell…he’s an a**hole and yet I know, as a reader, there’s something mysterious and possibly wonderful about him that hasn’t yet been discovered or revealed.

In Soldiers of the Craft, the main character Deandra is a witch. If you could cast any spell, what would it be/do?  I would want to fly, for sure.

Where did you get the idea to write Soldiers of the CraftI was sleeping and had a dream that I was with a group of friends running a way from something that was chasing us in a cemetery at night. We couldn’t get out until I grabbed the iron bars and they disintegrated…I woke up and thought, “Wouldn’t that be awesome?!”

If Soldiers of the Craft gets made into a movie, who would you like to see play Deandra and Donovan?  When I originally pictured Donovan, it was Paul Walker.  Deandra was Jennifer Connely.

Where are we most likely to find you writing? You’ll most likely find me in a local coffee shop with my ear buds in, sipping on a salted caramel mocha.

What’s the most discouraging thing that happened while trying to write/publish, and how did you get over it?  The most discouraging thing that happened while going through the writing/publishing process was realizing how LONG I’d made my book and how much fat I needed to trim.  I personally edited it at least 20 times before handing it over to my editor to clean up from there.

Any advice for aspiring writers?  Don’t force it.  If it is a story you want to read…write it.

What’s your favorite book?  The Harry Potter series

Who’s your favorite author?  J.K. Rowling and Stephen King

Do you listen to music while writing, or do you need silence?  Have to have music playing and I love “Blood Stream” on Pandora.  It’s my favorite station when writing.

What do you like to do when not writing? I enjoy getting out and hanging with my daughter, my boyfriend, my friends and family.

What’s your favorite dinner…..and dessert? Love Sauerbraten with spatzle for dinner and salted caramel gelato for dessert.

If you had to pick one movie or tv show to watch for the rest of your life, what would it be?  Hands down…Harry Potter series.

If you could spend a day with any one person from the past, who would it be?  My grandma Virginia.

New Release: Destroyer Rising by Eric R. Asher - Interview, Excerpt & Giveaway

Welcome to Eric R. Asher, author of Destroyer Rising!

What inspired you to write your first book?
I’ve loved reading since I was very young. Filling out those little maps the library used to hand out as a “reading challenge” was one of my favorite summer activities between school years. At some point in time, I’m not sure when exactly, I would to wonder as I read ‘Wouldn’t it have been neat if they’d done this, or a character had this ability, or if the rules of the world were just a little bit different?’ It eventually led me to write stories and that led me to write my own books.

If you could be best friends with one of your characters, who would it be?
Foster. He seems to be super popular. ;)

Who or what inspired you to be a writer?
I’ve always enjoyed making up stories. I had some fantastic teachers in high school that always urged me to pursue writing. I wasn’t really into the idea at the time, as I was still convinced I’d be a rock star. Let me tell you how well that worked out … ;)  It wasn’t until about 2005 when I realized I really wanted to sit down and write an entire novel.

What books have most influenced your life?
I will always owe thanks to Robert Asprin for his Myth Adventures series. They are such a wonderful blend of humor and adventure that I loved when I was a kid. Northworld by David Drake single handedly turned me into a huge fan of military science fiction.

Who is your favorite author and what is it that really strikes you about their work?
Right now, at this moment, my favorite author is Neil Gaiman. What has always struck me about his work, ever since The Sandman, is the flow of the story and the flow of the prose. Everything is clean and the visuals are stunning.

What book are you reading now?
I recently finished the Scorched series by Mari Mancusi and Silver on the Road by Laura Anne Gilman. Completely loved them both. Before that was Hit and Follow Me Boy by Delilah S. Dawson. If you haven’t read her work, it’s a must! I’m currently reading The Aeronaut’s Windlass by Jim Butcher.

What do you prefer paperback, hardcover, or ebooks?
Yes! That’s probably my collector mentality coming through a bit. :) I love the wonderful convenience and portability of ebooks. Of course, I also buy the hardcover releases of all my favorite authors, or paperbacks if they aren’t available in hardcover.

Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?
I would like them to know how much I appreciate them taking the time to read these books. Being able to share these stories with other people who enjoy them has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.

EXCERPT:

It felt good, right even, to be stocking and straightening the shelves again. I pulled a snow globe, of all things, from the top shelf and frowned at the broken Gateway Arch inside. We’d need to return that to the supplier. I shook the glass orb and watched the silver pieces swirl around the cityscape, clicking and tumbling as they went. A vision flashed through my mind, a torrent of power unleashed by the Old Man and the Fae, sending entire cities into oblivion. I shivered and my knuckles whitened on the base of the globe. Falias had appeared in that maelstrom, before the souls had swarmed Vicky and before I had peeled them off her with my necromancy.

Vicky.

I was sure Happy would have let me know if he’d learned anything new about Vicky, but I closed my eyes and pushed my aura out anyway. The experience didn’t give me a sense of travel like it used to.

The slightest effort told me where the bear was.

“Have you heard anything?” I asked.

The panda raised his head and looked directly at me from his perch inside the birdcage. From Mike? His voice boomed in his panda form. I have not heard from the Smith in days.

“Do you think he’s okay?”

I can’t fully express the unnerving oddity of having a ghost panda laugh at you. Happy’s skull-rattling chuckle faded. He is a fire demon within the Burning Lands. I am certain he is well.

“How’s Vicky?” The question died on my lips and turned to a scream as golden light blinded me.

Damian! Damian, answer me!

The bear’s voice cut through the storm of screams and terror in my head for only a moment, and then chaos reigned. Gold turned to ash, and ash to darkness, as a monstrosity that could not be real blasted my mind. Hunched and looming, with long, silver teeth. Its entire body squirmed and writhed, promising death to all who dared near it.

Light swallowed the awful vision. The nightmare of a thousand dying souls replaced it. The fire, the loss, the light. I didn’t know if it was flames or tears that burned my face, but it felt like my skull was coming apart at the seams. And then the vision was gone. Only darkness remained.

Review: I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review

Frog Hollow is an intriguing urban fantasy/paranormal with an unusual premise and some fun characters. I love small towns filled with quirky folk, especially if they have a paranormal aspect. This novel has great characters in spades!

What I Liked
-I loved the voice of main character Willa. I was sucked in immediately by her charm and snarkiness. Willa stood up for herself, and even though her life had not been an easy one, was willing to rise to the occasion when needed. And with that, I also liked the author's writing style-- fluid and graceful making for an enjoyable read.
-The town was so much fun. I loved all of the characters and the interactions. Seriously, there's never a dull moment there.
-The descriptions were so vivid and captured all of the senses which really drew me into the story.

What I Didn't Like as Much
-The novel starts out with a brisk pace, but then seems to drag a bit toward the middle. There were times I caught myself skimming so much that I had to go back to reread something I missed.
-The ending was bittersweet but was also one I expected from almost the beginning of the book. In fact, I remember thinking just a few chapters or so in, "I wonder if she's going to do that..."

Overall I really enjoyed this story. I adored Willa and loved seeing her connect with her new family.

- EXCERPT -

It’s pitch dark. Nothing but streetlamps light our march down the sidewalk. I constantly stumble to keep up with Reid’s long strides. It’s not because I’m staring at his ass in those jeans.

Definitely not that.

He pulls me down an alleyway that is lit only by the dim lamps hanging over the doorways. “My car is that way,” I say, pointing in the opposite direction.

“I’ll get it later.” He pushes forward down the alley, never bothering to look back.

We come out on another street where he stands looking up and down the block before motioning for me to follow him across the road. I still look twice each way even though the street is deserted. He waits next to a double-cab, gray truck. He flings the passenger side door open and pushes me inside.

“Where are we going?”

He ignores me, slamming the door in my face. Once he’s in the driver’s seat, I shoot him a dirty look. “Where are we going?” I ask again, this time hissing out the words.

“I thought maybe we’d go to your house, let you hit me over the head again.” He glares over at me, gesturing toward his wound. “You know, to even it out, because I think it looks pretty stupid lopsided like this.”

“Smartass.” I throw myself back into the seat and cross my arms as he backs out of the parking space. “No wonder you’re single.”

He stops momentarily in the middle of the street with his hand on the gearshift, waiting to push it into drive. “What?”

“I said you’re such a charmer.”

He scowls at me. His pissed off face is growing on me. I grin back. With one swift jerk of his hand, the truck is in gear and we zoom down the back street. I fumble to find my seat belt. My hands tremble as I click it into place.

We are already on the road leading out of town when I look back out the window, watching the lights from downtown fade out of sight. His eyes fixated on the road, his fingers running along the side of the steering wheel like he’s in a hurry.

“Where are we going?” I ask, this time in a whisper, avoiding eye contact.

I know it’s silly, because we just left a room full of witnesses, but I can’t stop picturing myself being thrown into a swamp full of snapping alligators like I’m Indiana Jones on my last crusade.

“You wanted this.” Attention straight on the road, he refuses to look at me. “So, we’ve got some things to straighten out.”

It’s vague, but at least it’s an answer. However, I doubt he’d actually tell me if he planned to feed me to alligators.

That would probably be counterproductive to his mission.

I lean back in my seat and breathe, assuring myself that just because he wants me to leave town doesn’t mean he wants me dead. I become slightly less panicked when we pull into the driveway leading down to my house. The sound of the gravel is noisy as we skid into place just behind the trailer. He jumps out of the truck before I even notice that he cut off the ignition. I scurry out, following him up the walk. He fumbles with his key in the lock.

“Hey!” I peek over his shoulder and scowl. “You’ve got to stop doing that.”
“Why?” He glares back, pushing the door open. “You’ve got a flashlight in your purse?”

I stomp in behind him. “You can’t just come in anytime you feel like it. I appreciate you taking care of the house, but it’s mine now.”

He stops in the middle of the room, and I stumble into his back. He turns around slowly, looking down at me. The house is dark; only the light of the moon shines through the windows highlighting his face. He’s close. He could touch me if he wanted. It would make sense. His palm under my elbow, or his fingers against my waist.

Except he doesn’t.

“Fiona gave me this key when I was ten years old,” he whispers in the small space between us. “Everyone in our family has a key to this house.”

I want to snap back at him, but I don’t know if I’m actually mad about the key or something else. I take a step back, and this time I look away. “I don’t know how families work.”

I shouldn’t be embarrassed. I’ve been an orphan for the better part of my life. I still can’t look him in the eye.

“There is a blue cookie jar on the top shelf of your cabinet,” he says, pointing behind me.
I follow his finger to the kitchen cabinets and then turn back to him. “Go look in it.”

I walk by him, dodging boxes along the way until I open the cabinet doors. In the very last one I see a chipped, blue jar stuck in the back corner. I climb up on the counter to reach it. I grab it, sitting down so I can hold it more securely. I glance at Reid, standing at the counter’s edge watching me, before I stick my hand inside. My fingers hit metal, and I can tell by the jingling sound it makes that the jar is full of keys. “Mine is the one with the giant R painted on it,” he says, crossing his arms. “Feel free to break in anytime.”

I clamp the lid shut. “You don’t mean that.”

He shrugs. “You’re right, I don’t. But I’m keeping my key.”

Darkness Brutal & Darkness Fair by Rachel A. Marks - Author Interview & Giveaway

Welcome to Rachel A. Marks, author of Darkness Brutal and Darkness Fair!

Author Interview

Tell us what your books are about.

DARKNESS BRUTAL is my debut novel about a teen boy named, Aidan, who is trying to save his sister, Ava, from the demons trying to hurt her. He has a few very unique abilities and he's hoping they'll help him protect her. But they're journey takes an interesting turn when Aidan ends up under the wing of an enigmatic con artist who runs a paranormal detective agency. Eventually he'll have to decide what he wants to save more; his sister or the world. The series title is The Dark Cycle.

How did you decide to write the story?

Aidan's story came to me as the question: what if a young man was asked to put aside the fate of the world to save someone he loves? I was intrigued by this idea of having to choose between two impossible things. And so the series The Dark Cycle was born.

What are you working on now?

Right now I'm working on DARKNESS SAVAGE, which is the third book in The Dark Cycle. It will be releasing October, 2016 (it's also available for pre-order). It takes Aidan's story to the next level, upping the stakes while still delving deeper into the characters from BRUTAL & FAIR as the team tries to unite against the Darkness. This series is meant to be a slow unveiling of the world and characters over all the books and hopefully the reader will get a lot of surprises and feel the story's only becoming bigger and  more exciting as it comes to a satisfying conclusion. Hopefully. ;) I'm also working on another series tied to The Dark Cycle, tentatively called Legacy of the Fallen that follows a young assassin girl who's trying to survive in a magic-torn world of the future.

Tell us something cool about the setting in The Dark Cycle?

I had a very fun time researching to write Aidan's story. Setting it in Los Angeles was an easy choice since I'm fascinated with the magic and darkness of the place. I grew up in the area so it was especially cool to learn pieces of the history that I never knew about. Facts about locations I've been visiting my whole life. I think the one that struck me the most was a place in Pasadena, aptly named, The Devil's Gate dam. This location plays a pivotal role in the series, though I only feature it in one scene. Learning the background was super fun and I learned so much that I ended up writing a few articles on it. If the stories of disappearances and deaths surrounding the land, and the strange rock formation shaped like a devil’s head don’t make you wary, then the story behind the myths most certainly will.

The famous scientist Jack Parsons, along with the science fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard believed the dam carried magical properties and powers, as the Native Americans had always said. But they also believed they could harness that power to call up something called, a moonchild; an anti-god that could abolish civilization as we know it. The rituals and magical spells (so famous they were given a name; the "Babylon Working") performed at the dam, as well as at Parsons' home, were said to have opened a portal to another world, allowing monstrous demons to come and go as they pleased. Just proves that sometimes fact is stranger than fiction.

What other books have you written that we can read?

I published a novella titled, WINTER ROSE. It began as a short story I wrote about fifteen years ago—my very first ever finished piece that I was proud of. Over the next decade I rewrote it about a dozen times from word one. It's now become the novella you can buy on Amazon. I've had several readers ask that I make it into a novel but I'm not sure it would translate with the same urgency and sharpness it does as a novella.

The story is about a young girl who lives atop a very cold and harsh mountain with her sick mother and fearful older sister. It begins as their father is leaving them alone to fend for themselves, and it follows Rose's story, showing how she holds things together and tries to keep her sanity and her soul in tact. It's a very simple story, actually. But it's still my favorite one of all the pieces I've written.
