Review: Judging Covers by Kristen Beairsto

Judging Covers

Kristen Beairsto

Contemporary Romantic Suspense
Released: August 1, 2013
Heat Level: Steamy
206 pages

FREE at Amazon 10/7 & 10/8/13

Synopsis:

Warning: This title is intended for readers over the age of 18 as it contains adult sexual situations and/or adult language, and may be considered offensive to some readers.

Books have always been Juliet Marlowe's sanctuary; the one place she would never be judged or made to feel like an outcast.  But when tragedy strikes, she has to get her nose out of the antique tomes she prefers and become the guardian of her five younger brothers and sisters.

Jules struggles to make ends meet.   And with the constant threat of losing custody of her siblings if she doesn't maintain the standard of living previously set by her parents, she finds herself forced to make tough decisions and take risks.

One thing she knows for certain is she definitely does not have room in her life for a relationship.  Especially with a man who's trying to readjust to civilian life and who once held a starring role in her secret fantasies.  No, absolutely not, she does not have any room in her life for Roman Price and his smoldering gaze that triggers her irritating blushes with only a thought.

But when everything Jules has built threatens to collapse on her, she finds herself not only accepting Roman's offer of help, but starts to question whether or not she misjudged the situation from the beginning.

My Review:

As soon as I read the synopsis and excerpt featured on my blog yesterday, I knew I'd be reading this book. The fact that Judging Covers is free on Kindle 10/7 & 10/8/13 just made it that much easier to add it to my list. I'm always up for a fun, lighthearted romp, and this novel didn't disappoint. It's a quick read, 206 pages, which amounts to only a couple hours for me so I read it in one sitting.

Frankly, I find main character Jules awe inspiring. Her parents died in an accident when she was twenty-one, and for the last five years she has worked her butt off supporting her five brothers and sisters. There is nothing Jules would not do for her family, which of course comes back to bite her. If anyone deserves a break, it's Jules.

That break comes in the form of Roman Price, who has recently returned home after an honorary discharge from the Navy due to an injury in Afghanistan. Roman is really too good to be true, but that works just fine for this lighthearted story. He falls for Jules immediately, and is more than happy to help with her siblings, as well as anything else she needs.

I enjoyed the interactions between the characters, especially between Jules and her siblings. There was just something so real about it. The plot is intriguing and lightning fast, no lulls whatsoever. The relationship between Roman and Jules progresses fast too, which is fine by me. I really liked the ending. It's sweet, wonderful, and just left me feeling good. This story is recommended ages 18+ due to sexual situations. If you enjoy lighthearted romantic suspense, add Judging Covers to your to-read list. I think you'll like Jules and Roman as much as I did.

Synopsis:

Every child in Belle Dam is taught about the feud from an early age. There are ‘our’ people and ‘their’ people. Friends and enemies. Associates and strangers. It’s the kind of town where eyes are always watching, and you don’t need a reason to sell out your neighbors.

But the feud is a lie. As a new wave of fury sweeps through the town, creating a third front to an already overtaxed war, Braden has been broken worse than ever. His innocence? Shattered. His heart? Crushed. His magic? Gone. His new life? Ruined. And this is only the beginning.

Beneath the city lay deep wellsprings of power. The one who controls them is the one who will win the feud. In a city filled with puppet masters, Braden must elude their strings and end the feud once and for all. But first, he must outsmart his father, evade Catherine’s dark magic, regain what was stolen from him, trick a phantom who refuses to die, and foil a demon’s master plan.

Even then, he may not survive. Because power is a problem, and victory comes with a cost…

Excerpt:

A headache of epic proportions pounding behind her eyes, Jules maneuvered the Camry on to her street and felt a little relief when she spotted the work truck parked at the curb of the house.

Just as quickly, the relief turned into a nagging worry that the deck might be beyond repair and her father’s old friend might have to rebuild it from scratch.

The headache spread to tighten the knots in her neck.

Parking the car beside the equally ancient minivan, she removed her prescription sunglasses and replaced them with her wire-framed glasses.  Pushing them up her nose, she caught sight of the mustard stain on her blouse and rolled her eyes.  Today had definitely not been her day.

She spent her day dealing with computer crashes, angry patrons, and her supervisor calling every twenty minutes to find out the status on a variety of projects.

Now, sure Mr. Price would be telling her the deck repairs would be beyond her budget, she tried to prepare herself for the worst.

Blowing out a frustrated breath, she gathered her bags and moved out of the car.

Reaching the door, she could hear the riot of noise from within signaling all the kids were home from school.

She stepped inside and found herself in the path of a charging bullet in the shape of Orlando wearing a devilish smile on his lips and a large open bottle of bubbles in his hands.  Since the house rules dictated any and all bubble play needed be conducted outside, Jules dropped her bags and waved her hands in front of her to stop him.

Orlando came to a halt, barely saving the bubbles from toppling from his hand.  A giggle escaped when he finally looked up at her.

Giving him a stern look as she put her hands on her hips, “You know the rules,” she pointed towards the bubbles in his hands.

Sending her a wide grin, his bright sapphire eyes twinkling, “Just trying to pay Mark and Edgar back.”

Shaking her head, “Well, why don’t we just go find them and talk to them instead?”

Orlando slipped his small hand in to hers easily and grinned widely, “I learned about poems today at school.  We’re making poems to go with our pictures for Mother’s Day,” he informed her and then frowned.  “But don’t say anything, you’re not supposed to know.”

Fighting to suppress a smile, Jules nodded solemnly, “I don’t even remember what you just said,” she replied as she pushed the door open into the kitchen.

Holding the door open and smiling down at her youngest brother, Jules spotted movement from the corner of her eye.

Before she could react, the twins popped up from behind the counters on the other side of the room and pelted both her and Orlando with their beloved super soakers.

Within seconds, her blouse clung to her skin, the front thoroughly soaked.  Holding up her hands in a lame attempt to block the streams of water rushing at her, “Edgar William, Mark William!”  She yelled above the din of the boys’ laughter.

At her stern tone, the boys seemed to realize their dire miscalculation as they ceased fire and stared at her.  Taking a deep breath, fists clenched at her sides and water dripping down the lenses of her glasses on to her cheeks, Jules took two steps towards her brothers and landed on her butt.  Hard.

Pain radiating up her tailbone, Jules looked up to see Orlando had dropped the bottle of bubbles in the mĂªlĂ©e.  A giant puddle of soapy liquid covered not only the floor, but now also soaked into her skirt.

Today has definitely not been my day, she decided silently, closing her eyes and taking another deep breath.

In the silence, Jules tried to assess whether she sustained any serious damage.  Not that I had money to go to the hospital if I did.

The back door opened and the sound of heavy booted feet stepped into the room.

“Hey, are you okay?”

At the unknown deep male voice, her eyes snapped open.

Humiliation gripped her.  Roman Price made his way towards her, a concerned expression on his face, and Jules wanted nothing more than for the floor to open up and swallow her whole.

Broader than she remembered, the vivid emerald gaze remained the same, maybe with a little more of an edge to it.  A red paisley bandanna tied around his forehead let her easily see that the blond hair causing hearts to flutter all those years ago still held a sun streaked quality although not as long as she remembered.  The soft edges of youth were gone, replaced by sharp chiseled features carved out of life.

Oh.  My.  God, were the only coherent words sliding through her suddenly incapacitated mind.

About the Author:

In between her to-be-read pile and trying to bring the characters in her head alive, Kristen spends as much time as she can with family and friends.  Much to her husband’s dismay, she enjoys collecting purses, shoes, and jewelry.  During those rare times she’s not working at her day job, rushing her daughters somewhere, watching movies with her husband, and trying to meet a deadline, she can usually be found energetically cheering for one of her favorite New York sports teams.

As with just about every other writer on the planet, Kristen grew up an avid reader.  She started with young adult before she technically hit the age range and moved on to sci-fi classics by Isaac Asimov and Ray Bradbury.  At fifteen, her best friend gave her a book she just had to read!  The book was Honest Illusions by Nora Roberts.  Always a sucker for a happy ending, she was a goner and fell in love with the romance genre.  Having started writing novel length stories at the age of eleven, Kristen’s stories all took a romantic turn from that point on.

Excerpt:

Chapter 1
“You know, all I ever wanted was to be normal.” Lily swiped the rain from her eyes and glared at the scene in front of her.
They stood on the crest of a hill. All around them, the land fell away steeply, and straight ahead, the stone circle loomed out of the mist.
“Doesn’t seem very ambitious,” Joe said, coming to stand beside her, his tall figure hunched against the downpour.
“Maybe not, but they didn’t exactly encourage us to dream big in the children’s home, and I thought—be realistic—keep my life goals small. How the hell hard can normal be?”
Too fucking hard, obviously.
She kicked a rock at her feet, and then winced. Trudging up here, cold, wet, her heels rubbed raw from her new hiking boots, she’d somehow convinced herself this whole thing was a figment of her imagination.
No such luck.
The scene before her was familiar. She’d seen it so many times… in her dreams.
It was official—she was a crazy lady who had visions.
She turned to Joe. “Sorry,” she muttered. After all, this wasn’t his fault. He’d been a real sweetie. Nor was it his fault that beneath her shirt, the mark on her arm tingled, reminding her of its existence. She rubbed it absently and caught Joe’s speculative gaze before he glanced away.
“What’s the matter, Lily?” His voice was gentle, his gray eyes worried.
“Nothing.” She gave him a bright smile. “So, this is where you found me?”
“Yes. Hard to believe it was over twenty years ago.”
A lifetime—her lifetime anyway.
Coming to this place had been a whim, when the dreams had become too much, invading even her waking moments until they were impossible to ignore. Something had told her that the answers were back here where it had all started. Illogical—but then nothing about her life made sense recently.
She’d never met Joe before—well, except for the one time, but she had no memory of that—though he had sent her a “birthday card” each year on the anniversary of the day he’d found her. He’d sounded genuinely pleased when she’d called and asked if they could meet.
“Will you tell me what happened?” That’s why she was here after all. At the children’s home, they had told her she’d been found abandoned as a baby and handed in. Nothing else. And by the time she was old enough to ask questions, she’d seen enough of life to accept that she probably wouldn’t like the answers.
Joe nodded. “I was checking the sheep down in the lower pasture when I heard some sort of explosion. I ran up here and there you were.” He waved a hand in the direction of the circle. “All alone, so tiny. You were naked but with this mark, like a tattoo, wrapped around your arm. I kept thinking—why would anyone do that to a baby?”
Why indeed?
But a faint quiver of excitement tingled in her gut. Was this the answer to the dreams and visions? That she’d been here before. Was it that simple? Okay, she’d been a baby. Even so, those memories would be locked in her brain somewhere. Now they were trying to get out. That was all. There was nothing weird or unexplainable about what had been happening to her.
She took the last few steps, which brought her into the lee of one of the great stones. It was slick with rain, but warm to the touch, and she traced the swirling patterns cut into the rock, too regular to be carved by nature. Resting her forehead against the warmth of the stone, she allowed her fears to drain away.
Maybe she wasn’t crazy after all. She could go home. Forget all this and get on with her nice, normal life.
As she raised her head, she caught a glimpse through the gap in the stones to the amphitheater beyond—also familiar. The space was empty except for a flat table-like slab in the center and behind that, a stone arch, as tall as the uprights. She stepped into the circle, prickles shivering across her skin as she passed between two of the huge pillars.
“You were lying there, on the altar stone,” Joe said from behind her.
A faint hum filled her ears. The sound arose from within the arch, and she walked slowly toward it.
“Do you hear that?” she asked. The hum grew louder, more a buzzing now like a swarm of hungry bluebottles.
“Hear what?” he asked. “There’s nothing here.”
“But there is. It’s coming from the arch. You must be able to hear it.” It seemed impossible that he couldn’t.
She came to a halt in front of the flat stone and peered into the archway, to the gray sky and the standing stones behind it. As she stared, the image wavered, a ripple running through the view.
Her heart pounded in her chest, her whole body rigid. Even as her feet itched to run as fast as possible in the opposite direction, longing washed through her, an impulse to step through the arch and find whatever was on the other side. Taking a deep breath, she forced her feet to remain still while her hand reached forward, fingers outstretched. Joe called out from behind her but she ignored him. Flames flickered within the frame of the arch. The crackle of fire filled her ears as the scent of smoke teased her nostrils. On her right arm, the mark burned through her skin like a brand.
The noise grew and grew until a shrill scream crowded her head, drowning out her conscious thoughts. A jolt of electricity slammed through her
Then blackness.
