Synopsis:

James Cuffy, better known as Cuff, is living in paradise with his girlfriend, on the small Caribbean island of St. Croix, where the sky is as blue as Cuff's eyes, the ocean as pretty as Rosie's cheeks, where the gentle lapping of the waves is a lullaby, and the swaying of the palm trees is a dance. The sandy beaches are as white as sugar, and the horizon is a world away. St. Croix indeed is paradise, the perfect place for living, laughing, and loving.

But the sandy beaches and the turquoise sea can provide no cover from the deadly eyes of the unknown stalker pursuing Cuff. Murder leads to murder as he attempts to untangle the terrible web in which he has suddenly become entangled.

The twists and turns are relentless, the roads of the fast action leading in all directions, but time is running out, and Cuff, his faithful Rosie at his side, knows it.

Excerpt:

These were not naked eyes, for the distance between these eyes and the beach bar at Cathy's Fancy was too great for the naked eye to discern who was who. No, these eyes had planned meticulously. The eyes were glued to a pair of terribly expensive and unbelievably powerful Swarovski Optik binoculars. The balcony on which they now worked, taking in the scene before them, was the perfect place to see but not be seen. The powerful binoculars saw to that.

The distance, the palm trees, and the rays of the sun all helped. The position had been hand picked, after careful consideration. Every angle had been considered, and, one by one, they had all been discarded for one reason or another until this very spot, the perfect place to observe while not being observed, had been selected.

Yes, the eyes had seen it all. The eyes had seen precisely what they had hoped to see. They were like a master puppeteer.  They planned, controlled, and observed, but from a safe distance. They did not miss a trick.

The eyes. The deadly eyes of St. Croix.

About the Author:

I have resided in and have visited many places in the world, all of which have contributed in some way to my own published writing. I have literally traveled throughout the world, on numerous occasions. I have lived in Finland, Germany, Thailand, Saudi Arabia, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, on the island of St. Croix, where DEADLY EYES is set. I gained the wanderlust to see the world, to experience other cultures, at an early age, and this desire has never left me. If anything, it has only gained in intensity as I have aged. I try to travel internationally at least once a year. In the interim, I spend lots of time traveling around both my home state of California and other nearby states.

I spent my early years in the small town of Lone Pine, California, the home of almost every western movie, in addition to a wide variety of other genres, made in the 30’s, 40’s, 50’s, and 60’s. In fact, Hollywood still films parts of big-time movies there today. My dad, the town’s lifeguard at the time, personally knew John Wayne, Lloyd Bridges, and Lee Marvin, all of whom came to the town’s pool, the Memorial Plunge, at times to cool off after a hectic day of working in the sun. I was even an extra in a movie filmed there in 1957, MONOLITH MONSTERS, a B-cult favorite even today. I was ten years old at the time. Even though I resided in a small town hours from the big city, I was exposed to the excitement of action and heroes at a formative age, and, thus, my interest in writing novels of suspense such as DEADLY EYES was born.

As a recent retiree from a forty-year career as a professor of writing, I now live in Southern California wine country with my wife, Kitty, and our two other cats.

Synopsis:

Fast cars and a smokin' hot passion...

Rex intends to own and drive his own car, but that will cost him millions up front. Last season was a disaster, thanks to a nasty break up, but it taught him a lesson and helped sharpen his focus on what he needed to do: Win every race. And stay away from pretty girls. The last thing he needed was to learn that his new head mechanic, Jimmy James, was the gorgeous redhead pin-up walking around his pit like it was some kind of dance floor.

Gail "Jimmy" James is the first female NASCAR mechanic. As if competing in a man's world isn't tough enough, her bombshell figure bellies her genius IQ, and the pit is no place for either. Nothing Jimmy knew about Rex Henderson the driver prepared her for Rex Henderson the man. But Jimmy has no time to dwell on her feelings as strange mechanical problems curse Rex's car. Whether sabotage or her own mistakes, Jimmy must stay one step ahead of trouble if she's going to keep her job, and keep her driver alive...

Excerpt:

“Can I get a picture of you two together?” Victor grasped her shoulder.

His fingers slid down her arm as he coaxed her closer to Winston. She’d love to flatten Victor with a right hook while smiling for the camera. That would be news. She spotted Rex standing to the right of the podium. He chatted like old friends with Dillon while they waited for the final shots. The leather-clad blonde sidled up to Dillon.

A flash went off. “Thanks,” Victor said, but Jimmy ignored him and fixed her attention on the arm the blonde slipped around Dillon’s waist.

The blonde made a show of nuzzling his neck. Jimmy raised a brow, then glanced at Rex. She started at the pain on his face. Every red-blooded woman knew that look. Jimmy focused on the woman. Crystal Sommers. When Rex started doing badly at Watkins Glen, the scuttlebutt was he’s been heartbroken over the blonde. The few photos Jimmy had seen of Rex and Crystal didn’t do her justice. Jimmy hadn’t recognized her when she’d sauntered past earlier.

Jimmy studied her. Even across the room, she could distinguish the brunette eyebrows, a dead blonde-from-a-bottle giveaway. But no man would care. A woman like her could break a heart with her body alone. Good thing looks weren’t everything. Jimmy glanced at Rex. Or were they? So what if she dumped him. Why didn’t he tell her to take a hike?

“Miss James,” Victor said, “do you want to be called Gail or Jimmy?”

“I’ve been called Jimmy since I rebuilt my first Chevy 350 in junior high,” she replied distractedly.

“Did you instigate the name because you don’t want to be singled out as a woman in a man’s world?”

Jimmy slid her attention back to Victor. “Are you implying I’m sexist, Mr. Hernandez?”

He blinked. “What—”

“Cause that’s what it sounds like.”

A glint appeared in his eyes. “No, ma’am. Women are great for the sport.”

Jimmy cast a glance back at Rex. Blast it. Crystal had plastered herself against Dillon’s hips. She flipped her golden tresses back and lowered her eyelashes in Rex’s direction. Couldn’t Rex see that he could do so much better than her?

“Excuse me gentlemen. I’ve got to take care of something.” She started for Rex.

“How about an interview later?” Victor called after her.

Jimmy heard Winston reply, “We can arrange that.”

With practice laps tomorrow and the Shootout the next day, an interview was the last thing she needed. Jimmy dodged a table full of driver’s wives, chattering away. She hadn’t taken her eyes off Rex. He seemed rooted to the floor. Why didn’t he walk away? She skirted the stage and stepped up beside him. He gave her a surprised look as she slid her arm under his.

Jimmy ignored the tension in his body. “Rex, we’ve been looking for you.”

He glanced at their table. “I didn’t see you two arrive.”

She patted his shoulder with her free hand. Crystal cut her a killing glance, and Jimmy said, “Victor’s asking for you.” She turned her gaze on Dillon. “He wants a picture of this year’s Sprint Cup Winner.”

Dillon gave Rex a you must be joking look.

Rex shifted closer to Jimmy and draped an arm around her shoulder. He gave her a squeeze, making her uncomfortably aware of the warmth of his hand.

“This is Gail, my new mechanic.” Rex looked straight at Crystal.

“So you’re the one?” Dillon bust out. “Hot dog. You’re exactly what NASCAR needs.”

Crystal snapped her glare onto Dillon.

“Love your eyebrows, Crystal,” Jimmy said.

Crystal’s head jerked in her direction.

“Come on Rex,” Jimmy said. “Introduce me to the other crew chiefs. Maybe I can wrangle some tricks out of them.” She locked gazes with Crystal. “Unless Crystal already beat me to it.” She shot the blonde an inquiring look as Rex started in the direction of the closest group of crew chiefs.

When they were out of Crystal and Dillon’s earshot, Rex said, “Gail, I—”

“It’s not what you think,” she interrupted. “Don’t sweat it.”

“Huh?”

He still had his arm around her waist. Jimmy glanced around the room. Victor Hernandez was staring at them. She shifted to push Rex away, then remembered Crystal. Checkmate.

“What the hell is going on?” Rex demanded. He stopped, forcing her to stop with him.

“You want Crystal to catch on to our charade?” Jimmy demanded.

Rex looked confused.

“Keep glaring at me,” Jimmy berated in a whisper, “and she’ll realize we’re not such good friends.”

Rex did the very thing Jimmy hoped he wouldn’t: he glanced in Crystal’s direction.
Damn, damn, and double damn.

He looked back at her. Something flashed in his eyes, anger, understanding, she couldn’t be sure, and he abruptly pulled her closer.
“Hey—” she began.

“Tut, tut,” he interrupted. “We can’t have Crystal catching on now, can we?”
“You can’t—”

“This was your idea. Remember?”
“And you’re taking advantage,” Jimmy hissed.

Rex shrugged. “I’m a pig. What can I say?” He started them toward the crew chiefs again.
“You’re messing with the wrong person,” she said under her breath. “I’ll get even.”

Rex laughed. “Just make sure it’s not with the Chevy, and I’ll live with anything you can dish out.”
“We’d better find that photographer,” Jimmy said in a warning tone. “I told your ex-girlfriend he wanted a picture of the next Sprint winner.”

Rex grinned. “You making a prediction?”
Blast him. The man had her and knew it.

They stopped beside the crew chiefs and finally released her.
Rex nodded to the group. “Gentlemen, meet my new head mechanic.” He stepped aside to put a respectable distance between them. “Gail James.”

Thank God Rex moved off. Hopefully Victor hadn’t read too much into the scene.
“Well now,” Victor said, stepping up beside her, “what have we here? Between cuddly rabbits and female mechanics, Rex’s got everyone on the run this season.”

Jimmy closed her eyes. And she had thought she needed a locker room floor to screw things up.

Birthday Bash: Proximity by M.A. George

Proximity
Proximity Series-Book #1

A Tale of Two Centuries by Rachel Harris

Alessandra D’Angeli is in need of an adventure. Tired of her sixteenth-century life in Italy and homesick for her time-traveling cousin, Cat, who visited her for a magical week and dazzled her with tales of the future, Alessandra is lost. Until the stars hear her plea.

One mystical spell later, Alessandra appears on Cat’s Beverly Hills doorstep five hundred years in the future. Surrounded by confusing gadgets, scary transportation, and scandalous clothing, Less is hesitant to live the life of a twenty-first century teen…until she meets the infuriating—and infuriatingly handsome—surfer Austin Michaels. Austin challenges everything she believes in…and introduces her to a world filled with possibility.

With the clock ticking, Less knows she must live every moment of her modern life while she still can. But how will she return to the drab life of her past when the future is what holds everything she’s come to love?

Extended Excerpt:

Without stopping or even slowing his stride, he grabs a map from a vendor and flips it open. “So Lethal Xperience is at the back of the park. We’ll hit that first and then make our way up to the front.”

He seems unaware that the length of his legs far exceeds my own. As I frantically attempt to match his stride, I must pant or wheeze because he finally looks down at me, no doubt pink-faced and wide-eyed both from the sensory overload surrounding us and my huffing at a near jog to stay beside him. He grins. “Try to keep up, Short Stuff.”

I grit my teeth with determination and somehow keep myself from muttering, Yes, Master. But the thought still makes me smile. Cat must be rubbing off.

We pass a circular ride filled with fake horses going up and down. Giggling and drooling children clap their adorable hands from their belted saddles while a spirited tune blares overhead. Just past that is a miniature roller coaster made to look like a giant, happy centipede. The child in the front seat waves to his mother as the cart dips, and his squeal of joy tails behind him. It’s too bad that not all roller coasters can be five feet tall.

Then I get a wicked idea.

Austin believes I am a child, naive and boring, and, it would seem, without any humor. This second challenge is supposed to be about fun, and nothing—not even the lead role in a prestigious play with a crowd of a thousand—will give me more joy than turning the tables on him, even if only for a moment.

Looking back at the children’s ride, I grab Austin’s elbow and say innocently, “Is this not the roller coaster you are looking for?”

He stops rather abruptly and peers at me through squinted eyes. “You know, it’s like you look normal…” He trails off and shakes his head. He points a long tan finger at the centipede ride and in a tone dripping with condescension explains, “Less, Arthropod Picnic is a kiddie ride. It’s made for pint-size ankle-biters ages three and under.”

I try my best to look disappointed. I do everything I can to contain my mounting delight. But after no more than a few brief moments, I let forth a victorious giggle.

Realization dawns on his face. “You think you’re funny, huh?”

When I nod, he chuckles. He leans back on his heels and lets his gaze travel over my body. Humor dissipates as my skin prickles to life. On Austin’s slow ascent back up, he pauses to look me in the eye and an emotion crosses his face. It’s so fleeting—gone and there in an instant—that I cannot catch it.

“So, you think you’re ready to play at the big girl table now.” The left side of his mouth kicks up in a grin. “We’ll just have to see about that.”

The apparent taunt and Austin’s added wink spur me on.

This is my chance to prove to him that I’m not the timid girl I once was. To prove to myself that I’m no longer the child of my youth but a woman ready for the future.

I sashay toward a person dressed as a shiny nugget of gold posing for pictures with children, feeling Austin watching me, his gaze on my every step like a physical touch. My legs feel wobbly under my skirt, but an energizing spark ignites in my blood. I glance over my shoulder, confirming I have his complete attention, and then with an outward shrug (and an inner dance), I reply with every ounce of confidence I can muster, “Yes. We will.”

Austin’s smile widens. The sounds and patrons of the park fade away, and it is as if we are the only two around. I don’t know what is happening…I scarcely even recognize myself in this moment. Being with Austin does that. It turns me into someone else.

And I like who I become.

I watch his slow saunter, my body poised with tension. I don’t know what is going to happen next, but I wouldn’t trade the delicious expectation for anything. Austin doesn’t stop until he is right in front of me, close enough that I have to look up to meet his demanding blue gaze, and so close that warmth fans across my face as he says in a low voice, “Careful, girl. You’re playing with fire.”

“I’ve been careful my whole life,” I tell him, surprising myself with the resentment ringing in my tone. But it’s the truth. “And you know, I think it’s about time for me to be a little…” I bite the corner of my bottom lip, searching for exactly the right word to describe the emotions and thoughts that have surfaced the last few days. When I find it, I smile and wiggle my eyebrows suggestively “Wild.”

Austin sucks in a breath. He searches my eyes and I boldly stare back, praying that he cannot see my knees shaking. Then, obviously concluding that I meant every word, he flashes his devilish grin. “I can
work with that.”

I grew up in New Orleans, where I watched soap operas with my grandmother and stayed up late sneak reading my mama’s favorite romance novels. Now a Cajun cowgirl living in Houston, I still stay up way too late reading my favorite romances, only now, I can do so openly. I firmly believe life’s problems can be solved with a hot, powdered-sugar-coated beignet or a thick slice of king cake, and that screaming at strangers for cheap, plastic beads is acceptable behavior in certain situations.

When not typing furiously or flipping pages in an enthralling romance, I homeschool my two beautiful girls and watch reality television with my amazing husband.

I write YA, NA, and Adult Fun & Flirty Escapes. Taste The Heat is my adult romance debut, and I'm also the author of MY SUPER SWEET SIXTEENTH CENTURY and A TALE OF TWO CENTURIES, as well as a ton of other books to come. I love hearing from readers and dishing books!

Excerpt:

A chill slammed into her. Again, somebody’s eyes on her sent a shiver up her arms. She whirled.

A black Harley was parked down the block. She paused at the rear of the car and stared at the rider. Odd that he’d parked away from the funeral crowd and sat there watching. Damn, the black visor didn’t stop the burn as his gaze bore down on her. Her breath caught. Was this the man who’d saved her? Wearing a black leather jacket and matching helmet, the man sat motionless.

She started toward him, and the rider stepped off the bike. If this was her ninja, she’d demand answers after she thanked him. He turned his back to her and then removed the helmet. His fingers wound through shoulder-length black hair, tying the strands together with a piece of leather. There was something vaguely familiar about him. His movements. His shoulders. His hands.

He turned to face her, and her heart rate raced toward the ozone.

“Hello, Kaycie.”

Ten years of missing Nate Wolfe boiled over. He was here. Really here. She sprang into his arms, clutched his broad shoulders and leaned into his hard-as-a-rock chest. God, his scent, a mixture of leather, woodsy cologne and virile man washed over her. Damn. Her body betrayed her by melting into him.

“Nate,” she whispered into his neck. “You saved me.” Her flesh heated when his large hands flexed against the small of her back and drew her closer.

“Come hell or high water,” he whispered, his warm breath sending heat streaks across her skin.

A split-second passed before memories of his lying tongue using that same phrase so many years ago hit her. A volcano of heartbreak erupted and spewed forth.

“Don’t touch me,” she spit the words at him while scrambling out of reach. “And don’t you dare say that to me. Ever.”

“You hugged me.” His eyes went wide and he held his hands up in surrender.

Damn him and his Cheshire cat grin. Kay plowed her right fist into his jaw. God, pain shot up her arm. His head barely moved. Still, she relished the snap of his teeth. Obviously, she didn’t hit him hard enough. He rubbed his scruffy jaw while that sexy little smile inched right back up his cheeks.

“Why are you following me?” Her knuckles hurt like hell, but he’d never know.

“What?” He held his hands in front of him, palms up. “No good to see you, Nate? No how you been? No nothing.”

“I’ll try this again, slower. Why. Are. You. Fol—”

“We need to talk.” The fun left his gaze. The sparkle dimmed to seriousness.

She stepped further away and sent him a glare designed to blister his flesh from head to toe. Unaffected, he picked up the cell phone earpiece she’d knocked off and reattached it to his ear while never taking his navy blue eyes off her.

“No, we don’t. Thank you for saving my life. Now do what you do best. Go away.” She spun on her heel. Rubbing her now swelling hand, Kay stalked straight to her waiting friend.

“You okay?” Holly asked over the top of the car before she slid behind the wheel.

“If I didn’t break my fist on his cement jaw, I will be.” Kay stabbed her seatbelt a second time before fastening it properly. She cursed the tears welling. Cursed the feel his warm body imprinted on her breasts. Cursed the memories that sent her heart spinning.

Holly dropped her .380 in her purse.

“Did you take that in church this morning?”

“Yep. God knows I carry. And the law gave me a permit. Glad I had it, because I didn’t know what the hell was going down when you hit him. Who was the hunk?”

“Nate Wolfe.”

“Holy shit. The guy from college?”

“The same. He’s been watching me. I’m sure of it.”

“I should’ve shot him.” Holly punched the gas pedal, ignoring the speed bumps.

“Thanks for having my back. And for getting the concealed carry license.”

“I’m never without protection. Or a gun.” Holly chuckled at her own joke. “Where to?”
