Tainted by Ginna Moran - Excerpt & Giveaway

Tainted
Demon Within #1

by Ginna Moran

Genre: YA Paranormal Romance/Fantasy
Release Date: June 30th 2016
Sunny Palms Press

Summary from Goodreads:

Seventeen-year-old Cami Anders uses one word to describe her life: Purgatory. What she doesn’t know is she’s closer to Hell than she thinks.

On the run from the demon that killed her parents, Cami struggles to find her place on the fringes of the Veiled Realm, the part of the world where demons and other creatures lurk in the shadows. Striving to find a normal life in the care of a former demon hunter, who would punch even an angel to protect her, is harder than Cami ever imagined. There’s nothing ordinary about sipping holy water like it’s her beverage of choice, having stare-downs with animalistic demons, and relying on a hunter with enough secrets to fill an ocean to keep her soul safe.

When the demon from Cami’s past arrives to collect her soul, which he believes is rightfully his, she must unravel the secrets her protector has spent the last three years keeping from her. She finds herself questioning her existence and learns that running isn’t the answer. The only way to find normalcy is if she fights for it. But is it worth the risk of losing everything, including her soul, in the end?

Excerpt

I somersault backwards, throwing my legs over my head before the demon shoves its tusks into my side. I land on my knees and jump back to my feet, disoriented from the sudden movement.
The demon roars.
I watch in horror as it rises on two legs. Its small forelegs now look like T-Rex arms except its claws don’t look like they can bend to grab onto me. They look like chicken feet with talon-sharp nails.
The demon waddles toward me, and I crouch low, spreading my arms wide to maintain my balance. I angle my arm into a hook and thrust my dagger out, ripping the demon’s underbelly. Black goo sprays out like a fountain, coating my face and hair with its awful smelling slime. My chest heaves as I fight the urge to gag. I swipe my sleeve over my mouth to wipe away the demon blood as best I can.
The demon falls over, its legs twitching, trying to stabilize itself. I jump to my feet and kick it onto its stomach to let the blood pour out faster. It claws at the ground, realizing that it can’t outmatch me. Before it can flee, I ram my dagger straight into the back of its skull. The demon drops to the ground, unmoving. God, this is disgusting.

I step back and watch the demon dissolve into a runny mess. Come dawn, the sun will take care of the rest of the cleanup. At least it’s one less thing I’ll have to worry about.

Character Interview with Mia Crawford from The Warrior Prophet by Lisa Voisin

Welcome to Lisa Voisin, author of The Warrior Prophet. She is here to share an interview with main character Mia Crawford!

Character Interview with Mia Crawford

Sitting in front of me today we have Mia Crawford, the main character from The Warrior Prophet (Book 3 in The Watcher Saga). As the author of this book, it’s my pleasure to interview her.

Sitting in the chair across from me, Mia wears boyfriend jeans and a blue top. Her long, dark hair is tied back in a braid, but a stray lock falls in her eyes. She tucks it behind her ear and glances out the window, her haunted green eyes fall on something for a moment, and I can’t help but wonder what she sees. Even though I’ve known her for three books now, I want her to speak for herself….

Lisa: Welcome, Mia. Why don’t you start off by telling us a bit about yourself?

Mia: Thanks. Well, I’m seventeen, and I’m in my senior year of high school at Westmont. And according to my angel friends, I’m a prophet.

Lisa: A prophet. What does that mean exactly?

Mia: Well, they tell me it means I can see and communicate with angels, but can also do some things that angels can’t. My blood, for instance, can be used in healing spells and other incantations. I also get visions or dreams, sometimes of the future. Other times, I remember things that happened a long time ago, in my past life for instance.

Lisa: The Watcher Saga is about your connection with a very special… um… person in your life. Should we call Michael a person?

Mia: Of course. He is human, even if he’s also an angel.

Lisa: How did you meet Michael Fontaine?

Mia: This lifetime you mean? We met at school, but the moment I first saw him, I knew that I knew him from somewhere else. I just didn’t know where. Then I discovered that I knew him in a past life thousands of years ago.

Lisa: How did that feel? To discover you shared a past life with someone?

Mia: Pretty strange, actually. To meet someone you were married to before. An angel who gave up everything just to be with me. I mean, no pressure or anything—right? (Laughs) Our time together was short-lived back then. I died prematurely, but though I didn’t remember the details, I experienced all the emotions. So when I first met Michael, a lot of those memories came in the form of feelings so I was way too emotional at times.

Arielle, one of the other angels I know, explained that it was because I was remembering things on a soul level. That was why my emotions were out of whack. Apparently remembering at a soul level affects people very deeply.

Lisa: Wow. I can only imagine. That’s quite a connection to have. But Michael is an angel after all. Isn’t he?

Mia: Yes. He’s an angel. Though he was born into a human body in this life. He fell, and yet he wanted to earn his redemption. Having a human life was the only way.

Lisa: You and Michael have been together for a little while now, in this life even. I guess you’ve gotten to know him.

Mia: At bit! But it’s really only been a few months. They’ve just been so busy. It was only a few weeks ago, in The Angel Killer, that he was injured by a cursed sword that used his own angel essence against him. I had to babysit his angelic powers for a while there.

Lisa: What was that like?

Mia: Amazing. Terrifying. I couldn’t actually fly or anything, but I was able to see the world the way angels see it, and connect to the Network as if I were one of them, which was amazing. But the things I saw were pretty awful—horrifying even. I learned to deal.

Lisa: What’s the one thing that you learned from that?
Mia: That people aren’t as in control as they think they are. We are all prey. Your attitude can make or break you, not just in mindset, but in the things you attract. It’s all very absolute.

Lisa: Indeed. That’s is a chilling thought. How then, did you handle Michael being trapped?

Mia: Not well. If it weren’t for the angels watching over me, I don’t think I would have made it through that first week. And then Arielle told me the angels couldn’t go in and get Michael back. I was such a wreck, my best friend, Heather, acted like I was going to break. At times, it felt like I would. If it weren’t for Rhys, I don’t know what I would have done.

Lisa: Why Rhys?

Mia: He watched out for me in Michael’s absence, and it was his idea for me to go in and get Michael back. He gave me hope.

Lisa: What did you do?

Mia: I couldn’t just leave him there, could I? Not after everything he’s done for me. I had to go get him. No matter what it took, or who I had to face to do it.

Lisa: Without giving anything away, do you think you and Michael will ever be able to have a normal relationship after everything you’ve been through?

Mia: (Laughs) What is “normal” anyway? I mean it would be nice, but I’d rather have an “abnormal” relationship with Michael than a “normal” one with anyone else. I think we both know that we’d do anything for each other. I know that about him. I hope he knows that about me now.

Lisa: Are there any last words of advice or anything you’d like to share?

Mia: Yeah, enjoy the moments that you have with people. Celebrate the positive as much as you can.

Lisa: Wise words for someone your age.

Mia: (Shrugs) I’m an old soul.

The Watcher
The Watcher Saga #1

Millennia ago, he fell from heaven for her.

Can he face her without falling again?

Fascinated with ancient civilizations, seventeen-year-old Mia Crawford dreams of becoming an archaeologist. She also dreams of wings—soft and silent like snow—and somebody trying to steal them.

When a horrible creature appears out of thin air and attacks her, she knows Michael Fontaine is involved, though he claims to know nothing about it. Secretive and aloof, Michael evokes feelings in Mia that she doesn’t understand. Images of another time and place haunt her. She recognizes them—but not from any textbook.

In search of the truth, Mia discovers a past life of forbidden love, jealousy and revenge that tore an angel from Heaven and sent her to an early grave. Now that her soul has returned, does she have a chance at loving that angel again? Or will an age-old nemesis destroy them both?

Ancient history is only the beginning.

The Angel Killer

Now that she’s found him again, all Mia Crawford wants is some downtime with her fallen angel boyfriend, Michael. But the call of duty keeps him away—from school and from her—with more demons to smite than ever.

When Michael is mortally wounded by a cursed sword, Mia must perform an ancient blood ritual to save him. But the spell exacts a price. Haunted by visions of war, torture, and despair, Mia discovers the world is in more danger than she ever imagined. Behind the scenes, an evil adversary pulls all the strings.

After redemption, there’s Hell to pay.

As if he sensed me watching him, Joshua looked up. My breath caught in my throat. If I thought Michael was gorgeous, it didn’t even begin to compare to this guy. Whereas Michael looked like he had been sculptured into perfection, Joshua was gorgeous because of the slight imperfections. His nose was ever so slightly crooked and he had a small scar just above his right eyebrow. Even his five o’clock shadow made him look a little rugged. I pulled my eyes away from him just long enough to stare at the ceiling and mutter, “I hate you a tiny little bit right now.”
When I dropped my gaze back to him, I discovered he was still looking at me through his long black eyelashes. His eyes were such a clear blue; it was like staring at the sky outside. His hair was as dark as his lashes, looking almost like it had a blue hint to it in the dim light. Stray locks of his hair that were no longer brushed to the side, were dangling in his eyes.
As one of his eyebrows arched up questioningly, it dawned on me that I was just standing there, gawking. I tucked my hair nervously behind my ear and hurried over. “Joshua Walsh?”
“Who wants to know?” he asked, looking up at me through hooded eyes.
“I’m Angel,” I offered. With one look he was throwing me off balance and it was really disconcerting. I’m not scared of going up to guys and talking to them, but this one had the geese back in my stomach.
“Yes. Yes you are,” he agreed, smiling. He pointed to the seat opposite.
I slid into the seat, only just making it graceful before my legs gave out on me. “No,” I told him, clearing my throat. “My name is Angel.” I frowned. “Although I suppose you’re technically correct.”
“It may be the beer, but you’re not making any sense.” He picked up his bottle and used it to point at me, winking as he did so. “It’s alright though, because you’re hot.”
I tucked my hair back behind my ear again, then, conscious that I had just done that, dropped my hands into my lap. Of course he noticed and smirked. I took the opportunity to clear my throat again. “Let me start again. You’re hot.” My eyes bulged as I realized what I had said. “No, I mean, I’m hot.”
I froze, mortified. As he continued smirking, I did what any self-respecting woman would do. I let my head drop to the table with a bang which was sure to leave a red mark. I would have gladly had the floor open and swallow me whole, even if at this point, there was a strong possibility there would be something under there.
“You know, I’m going to be honest,” he drawled. I raised my head just enough to look at him. “That’s the most entertaining pick up line I’ve ever had.”
My head shot upright as I began furiously shaking it. “I’m not hitting on you!”
He leaned forward. “It’s alright,” he told me in a stage whisper. “Because you’re hot. And so is that accent. Where are you from?”
“England,” I admitted, knowing full well my face was quickly turning an interesting shade of pink. “But I live in New Orleans now.”
He leaned forward again, this time propping his head up with his hand, and smiled. “I think I could listen to you talk all day.”
“I think you should probably go to bed and get some sleep,” I retorted.
The smirk was back. “You going to come back with me?”
“No,” I told him, trying my hardest to appear unaffected by his suggestion.
The smirk grew into a grin. “You’re totally lying,” he informed me. “You think I’m hot.”
“I think you’re drunk,” I informed him. And hot, yes. But there was no way I was going to tell him. Again.
He shrugged, the grin never slipping from his face. “But that doesn’t stop you from thinking I’m hot. I can be both.”
“Cocky much?” I asked him, rolling my eyes.
He pulled himself back and allowed himself to lean back into his seat. “Well, if you’re not hitting on me, why are you here?”
“Because apparently, somebody upstairs has got a twisted sense of humor,” I told him, the statement verging on a growl. I took a deep breath and forced the growing resentment from me. “I’m going to start over. My name is Angelina, or Angel, but I am also your Guardian Angel.”
Joshua rose to his feet, the motion scattering the empty bottles across the table. “And that’s where your chat up line failed, darlin’, because there are no such things as angels.” He downed what was left in the bottle and stalked over to the bar.

Cheryl works in an office by day. By night she leads a (not-so) secret life DJing, and throughout it all, is constantly scribbling away as the plot bunnies demand constant attention.

Her first novel was written when she should have been revising for her exams. While it is unlikely to ever see the light of day, it was the start of long relationship with the evil plot bunnies of doom.

A need to do more than just one subject led her to the University of Hull, where she graduated with an honours degree in American Studies. For the third year of the four year degree, she was able to call Baton Rouge home. Since then, Louisiana has claimed a large chunk of her heart, and remains a place she will always consider home.

LSU was where she discovered FanFiction and currently writes (mainly) CSI:NY stories and a Rescue: Special Ops story.

When not transcribing the stories of the angels and archangels, working, or DJing, she is at the beck and call of three cats – all of whom rank higher in the household than she does.
