Published by: Booktrope Publishing
Publication date: October 25th 2015
Genres: Urban Fantasy, Young Adult

Kadence Sparrow wasn’t born a devil’s child—she was turned into one. Now, she’s hiding from the truth, and running for her life.
For years, Kade’s true nature has lurked behind an illusion, so when her dad gets another job transfer, she knows the drill: no close friends, no boyfriends, and most importantly: don’t expose what she is. Ever. Keeping secrets is easy. Lies are second nature. So is the loneliness—and the fear, but when the Shadows attack, and Kade meets Cole Spires, she could expose everything she’s trying to hide.
As one of the Celestial Children, Cole lives by an oath: defend the Ward, protect the Primordial race, guard the gateways, and stick to his own. Everything else is a distraction, and besides, he’s lost enough. Cole’s job is clear, and no one his age does it better. So, when he meets Kade in a club downtown, he assumes she just wants his attention. Most girls do, but Cole soon realizes … Kade isn’t like most girls.
The children of heaven and hell are living among us, fighting an age-old war. And falling for someone from the opposition is not an option. But a chance encounter between Kade and Cole will blur the rules, as Kade’s journey to keep her truth hidden catapults them together and into a web of lies, forcing her to not only face the demon inside her, but to answer the hardest question of all.
Which is thicker—blood or water?

EXCERPT:

PLUMB STOOD in the driveway, hands on her hips, a piece of bright yellow paper in her hand. Cole groaned, exhausted, as he made his way toward her. The only light was a dim one above the door on the Brotherhood’s front porch.

Plumb waved the paper in the air. “It’s four fifteen in the morning, and I’m afraid to even venture why I received a notice for you to appear in front of the Warden later today. And Danny has nothing to say, which could only mean one thing—” Plumb looked him up and down. “With the condition you’re in, I’m not sure I want to know where you’ve been.”

“You probably don’t.” Cole held his hand out for the summons.

Plumb handed the paper over, scowling, and Cole slipped it, unopened, into his pocket.

“Are you going to tell me where you’ve been?”

“Thought you didn’t want to know.” He walked toward the porch. There was a time, when Cole was much younger, that he never would have spoken so bluntly to his Lead, but those days, buried by all of his new responsibilities within the Ward, had faded. They were close to equals now, even though Plumb was about fifteen years older.

“Cole.”

“I’m tired as hell. I’ve been up all night.” He turned to face her. “Okay? I need to get some sleep.”

“What were you doing in the middle of the night that the Principals couldn’t handle?”

“A girl.”

“Excuse me?”

“No…I, no, I wasn’t doing a girl. She just…never mind.” He headed for the door, flustered. The last thing he needed to do was think about Kadence like that. His brain already went into some kind of jumble every time her name was mentioned, and it was bad enough that she’d had her hands all over him.

“You were with Tiffany? Until four in the morning?” Plumb sounded like a disapproving mother.

“Cole, I understand you’re seventeen, and boys—”

“I was with Kadence.” He wished she would shut up.

High school outcast Tara Cox hates her career criminal dad. Despite her reluctance she's as talented at deception and secrecy as him. When new friends, including the guy she has a crush on, shows her kindness, she dreams of a different life that doesn’t involve violence and solitude.

Sixteen year-old Inara Mason desires to break away from her controlling dad. She develops a supernatural bond with a real angel who shows her monstrous mermaids and offers the illusion of love.

Former juvenile delinquent Leo Price struggles with the stigma of being a killer and keeping his love for Inara secret. He takes comfort in his dedication to God and the support of his mentor, Inara’s father. As evil closes in, they will fight for their lives, love, and the future of their souls.

Teaser

Tara gripped the cool handle of the gun, a dark contrast to her pale fingers. Her gaze flitted to the man on the floor. A drunken stranger no longer flailed before her. Now she saw evil as he morphed into a hated and dangerous enemy. Her heartbeat pounded in her ears and her entire body tensed. The room darkened around her, shadows swirling and dancing around the walls.

Vin laid a hand on her shoulder, his fingernails biting into her flesh. His body blocked out even more light. “Some people deserve death. You are making the world a better place. Kill him.”

Ten Tough Women Who Love as Hard as They Fight by Zen DiPietro

I am so excited to have author Zen DiPietro on the blog today. She's here with an awesome guest post about kickass female characters. Enjoy :)

Ten Tough Women Who Love as Hard as They Fight
by Zen DiPietro

I love books that give all the feels. Laughter, love, excitement, epic battles, and things that go boom. It’s what I write and what I love to read or watch on the big screen. So here’s a list (in no particular order) of my ten favorite female heroes who are awesome at being awesome, but are also strong enough to love.

Elizabeth Bennet from Pride and Prejudice.
Whether it’s the book or the movie, Lizzie is way ahead of her time in terms of feminism, standing up for herself and living her life on her own terms. But she and Mr. Darcy are so beautifully suited that their story remains a favorite a hundred years after it was written.

Leeloo from The Fifth Element.
She’s a supreme being and he’s the ever-reluctant hero. Her job is to protect him and the world from destruction. Which she does. Yet she’s not too high and mighty to know that Corbin Dallas and love are worth fighting for.

Jane Smith from Mr. and Mrs. Smith.
What to do when two top assassins are required to kill each other? They do their very best in spectacular fashion, only to fail. Perhaps intentionally. And only then do they realize how very much they care about each other.

Devi Morris from Rachel Bach’s Paradox series.
This is one of my very favorite book series. Devi is exactly the kind of heroine I want to read more of. More like her, please! But she falls in love (I won’t mention a name in case you haven’t read this series) and I love how she handles it.

Elizabeth Swan from Pirates of the Caribbean
She doesn’t start out all that tough but she does turn into a pirate and even becomes pirate king. Her love for Will goes back to childhood and once he gets over his shyness, there’s no stopping them. She even steps in front of a wall of swords and feeds a pal to a Kraken to save her beloved.

Kassimeigh from the Guardians of Terath series.
Okay, so she’s a hero from one of my own books. I don’t mean to shamelessly self-promote, but I wrote her precisely because she’s the type of character I love. So it only makes sense that I adore her, as well as her love story.

Amanita from Sense8
If you haven’t watched Sense8, it’s fantastic. I can’t wait for season 2.  Amanita is wicked fierce, particularly when it comes to her love for Nomi. While Amanita’s pure devotion to Nomi is a background B story, it outshines the A story for me.

Breq from Ancillary Justice
Her love is not a romantic one, but it’s all the more touching for it. As the humanized form of a ship-mind (I know, sounds weird, but that’s what makes this book great), the fact that she cares so much for a person gives her purpose and makes her relatable.

Kahlan from Wizard’s First Rule
I read this series a long time ago, but Kahlan is a great character. The Mother Confessor and the last of her kind. Even though it seems she and Richard can’t be together, it doesn’t stop her from loving him.

Rose Tyler from Doctor Who
If you haven’t watched the 2005 reboot of Doctor Who, there’s a long-term romance between the doctor and Rose that is every fangirl’s dream. Rose doesn’t wield a sword or magic but she leads with a wicked sense of adventure and a heart as big as the universe. The love between her and the doctor was pretty much everything in this series and once the show moved on past it, Doctor Who really suffered a big loss.

So that's it! 10 fantastic women who kick butt, take names, and create compelling love stories precisely because they are so dynamic. If I didn’t mention one of your favorites, do chime in! Especially if it’s a book hero, because I’m always on the prowl for my next favorite read. J

Okay, everyone. Share your favorite kickass romantic female leads in the comments. Mine is Eve Dallas from the In Death series by J.D. Robb aka Nora Roberts. I also love Katarina from my romantic fantasy, Stolen Moon, and Ashlyn from Shadow Fire. They both fight for what they believe in and love with all their hearts.

Facing Fortune
Guardians of Terath #2

Zen DiPietro

A new manahi. A new military. A famous bard who suddenly resurfaces after a decade of hiding.
A lot of changes have taken place on Terath, and an ecological crisis has raised tensions to the breaking point. Kassimeigh and Arc must work with Luc and the scientists in the Capital to determine whether the discovery is a threat to the planet. Each discovery unspools more questions, as they question the nature of mana and what it means to Terath.

At the same time, they must try to calm an increasingly nervous population. Will and Izzy offer their help in that regard, but the newly-formed Guard has never been called into action before.
Meanwhile, Kassimeigh must deal with a shocking change in her own circumstances, which forces her to rethink her place in the world.

Life, death, mana, and chaos rival one another for supremacy. How can Kassimeigh help protect the world when she has no idea where she belongs in it?

Review: The Torment of Rachel Ames by Jeff Gunhus

The Torment Of Rachel Ames
by Jeff Gunhus
Publication date: November 10th 2015
Genres: Adult, Thriller

Suffering from writer’s block, novelist Rachel Ames escapes to a lake cabin to calm her mind and regain a sense of herself. The location is perfect. Isolated. Beautiful. Inspiring. It even comes with a good-looking landlord who shows an interest in her. But she can’t shake the sense that something terrible has followed her to the lake, something just beyond her consciousness, something out on the edge where the sounds of a raging fire and sirens linger whenever she slows down to listen. Determined to make the cabin work, she tries to settle in and give her new life a chance. But when strange things begin to happen around her, she wonders if she’s made a terrible mistake. As the darkness that’s followed her manifests itself in inexplicable ways, her concept of reality is stretched thin and she realizes nothing at the lake is what it seems. As she fights to survive with her sanity intact, she understands too late that the location she’s chosen for herself is far from perfect.

Review: I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review

This book is hard for me to review. It was one of those stories that dragged me in, shook me up, and left me rather sad. I loved Rachel-- she had a wicked sense of humor. The plot sucked me in immediately, all the strange things occurring in the mysterious cabin on the lake. When I realized where the author was taking me, I wanted to stop reading- didn't want to experience Rachel's heartbreak. But it was too late. I was along for the ride, and there was no getting off until the end.

The book was extremely well-written and one of the best thrillers I've read in a long time. So many stories are over the top and in your face. This was subtle, gut-wrenching, and intriguing all at the same time. The ending was both a relief and tragic. Normally I despise books that leave me in danger of crying, but that's entirely personal. IMHO, Mr. Gunhus is one hell of a writer. Though I still haven't decided if I'm glad I read this one or not... yet.

An amazing journey. But not for the faint of heart, and definitely not for those who don't like experiencing another's gut-wrenching heartbreak.

What's the Line Between Erotic Romance and Erotica by Ann Gimpel, Author of Dragon Maid

Welcome to Ann Gimpel, author of the Dragon Lore series. This is a great post on what separates erotic romance from erotica.

What’s the Line Between Erotic Romance and Erotica?

I suppose every writer has a slightly different definition, but for me one of the differences has to do with the presence (or absence) or a strong, believable plot. I see erotica as a series of sex scenes with either no plot, or a very thin one sort of tossed into the mix as an afterthought. Applying this definition, a book can have some amazingly smutty sex scenes, but still not be erotica if there’s a compelling plot that pulls the reader along. You know, something more than curiosity about what the next sex scene will look like.

I probably shouldn’t admit this, but books without plots aren’t very interesting to me. Yeah, it makes me look pretty dated, huh? Crabby, old woman who insists on books that actually have a storyline. I’ll write steamy, descriptive sex, but it has to be a normal progression of my story, not just a sex scene because we went a few hundred words without one.

Another big difference is erotica doesn’t require a HEA or HFN. All romance books do. It’s part of their timeless appeal. Digging a little deeper, for the romance genre, the romance is the story. I’ve gotten a complaint or two for some of my books that, if you took the romance away, there would still be a story. I just hang my head, blush, and mutter, “Guilty as charged.” Virtually all my books feature subplots that support the romance, but could easily exist on their own. I’m fascinated by complicated plots, different worlds, different timeframes, and mingling them into believable wholes with hot alpha men and strong, confident women.

I have several romance series, plus a bunch of standalone novellas/novels. While I enjoy series work, romance series require a new romance for each one. Hence, a new h/h combo. Sometimes, I’d prefer to write a two or three part series with the same protags. It’s actually not uncommon in urban fantasy, which is mostly what I write (with a smattering of historical tossed in).

The Dragon Lore includes an ancient, time-traveling dragon shifter who’s been asleep for three hundred years. It’s urban fantasy, but with strong romantic elements. To Love a Highland Dragon, has an HEA. The first book in that series, Highland Secrets, has a HFN. In book three, Dragon Maid, there’s yet another dragon shifter couple with an HEA. The final book in that series, Dragon’s Dare, doesn’t introduce any new major characters, but the couple from the first book finally, finally claw their way to an HEA.

There’s a time and place for every story. Erotica has an appeal, but I think it’s different from erotic romance, or the other romance genres. What do you think? Do you have a preference when you’re hunting down something new to read?

I agree-- erotica is sex with a bit of a story and erotic romance is a story with steamy sex. I'll take the romance every time :) Throw in some ghosts or shifters and I'm on cloud nine!

Tumble off reality’s edge into myth, magic, and Scottish dragon shifters

When pressed, Jonathan Shea admits magic runs through his blood, but he’s always been ambivalent about it—until a dragon and her mage show up in the Scottish Highlands, and then all bets are off. Jonathan’s charmed and captivated by the dragon—a creature fresh out of myth and legend—but the woman bonded to it is so enticing, he tosses caution aside and catapults into the magical power he’s avoided for so long.

Britta and her dragon prepare for a battle to save Earth. Freshly transplanted from a much earlier time, she feels awkward, out of place. The first person she lays eyes on is Jonathan. There’s something about him. She can’t quite pinpoint it, but he has way more magic than he lets on. Magic aside, it runs deeper than that. For the first time ever, she questions the wisdom of remaining a maid. If she doesn’t make up her mind damned fast, though, her choices will fritter away. Beset from every side, she’s never needed her magical ability more.

Surrounded by dragon shifters, Celtic gods, Selkies, time travel, and a heaping portion of magic, Jonathan comes into his own fast. Fell creatures target him, Britta, and her dragon. In the midst of chaos, he and Britta find scorching passion and love so heartbreakingly tender, it will change their lives forever.
