Her life was a lie!
Bailey knew her upbringing wasn’t normal but she’s worked hard to stabilize her life. At 29, she finally has a good business, a stable home; her life is miles from that of her childhood. Then suddenly her mother dies, leaving a gaping hole and a discovery that they may not even be related. If Guy, the private investigator is to be believed, her life is a lie. Using the skills she learned on the streets, Bailey travels back through a sketchy and dangerous past, to find answers. Dodging bullets, staying ahead of those who want her dead and convincing Guy she can do it alone, are making it difficult to discover not only the secrets of her mother’s past but that of a family claiming she is theirs.
Everyone seems to have a story... but who’s telling the truth? And who wants her dead? Is Guy part of the solution? Or part of the problem? To discover the facts, she’ll have to untangle a web of deceit, lies, and secrets, dating back over thirty years.

Interview With Author Maggie Thom

What was your inspiration for Captured Lies?

It was one of those moments where really different events happened and I started playing with them until they melded and molded into the story, Captured Lies.

I flew three times in six months which was very rare for me. One time on the way to the airport, an airplane coming in for a landing was flying really low. It looked like it was way too low and would crash. Great thoughts to have on the way to getting on a plane, right? Anyway I started wondering what would happen if it did crash, would anyone survive? And what if it was a baby, what would happen to it? I had also seen some posters for kids who have gone missing and parents who are desperately looking for them. I couldn’t imagine how horrifying that is, so if a baby had been kidnapped, how might she find her way home.

So as I started playing with ideas, I thought what if the baby had been kidnapped and the woman she was with on the plane was her abductor. Then the idea came to me what if the baby survived the crash and was then saved but really was kidnapped again. How would a grown woman find out who she really was? How would she find her family and what if someone went to great lengths to stop her?

Tell us about the main character in the story. Who is Bailey?

Bailey is still one of my favorite characters, she has been through so much but is learning how to put it all behind her and move forward. She grew up living her life on the run and on the streets. She had no idea why as her mom would never tell her, she’d just show up at school and Bailey would know that she’d never see any of her friends again, if she’d even bothered to make any that time. Or her mom would wake her up at night, if she’d been able to sleep and they’d be off to the next place, the next city. Bailey learns to be very self-reliant and finds it really difficult to ask for or accept help. When she wants to know something or there is something to get done, she’s up and doing it. She’s strong, independent and totally shocked when she learns that her life is a lie. Since her mom has just died she can’t ask her so she has to rely on the sketchy memory of her childhood and travel back to many of those places to see if she can find figure out the truth. And she has to learn to trust and rely on Guy the only link she may have to her past.

Do you listen to music when you write? If so, what type of music provided inspiration for Captured Lies?

I do listen to music while I write. I love having that background sound, it makes me feel like I’m not alone as I’m busy tormenting or tearing apart someone’s life. I really like listening to all types of music but anything that has an inspiring message in it or an upbeat tune to it. I listen to all types of artist but the types of songs I usually listen to are rock, pop, country, easy rock.

What are a couple of your favorite books/authors?

I have several authors that I love. The ones who inspired me over the years were: Robert Ludlum, Stephen R Donaldson, Anne McCaffrey, Sandra Brown. The ones who inspire me today: P.M. Terrell, Pamela Shine, Virginia McKevitt, Jeanne Marie, David M. Brown are but a few of them.

My favorite book is: The Thomas Covenant White Gold Wielder series. I read it many years ago but it was one of those series that really stuck with me.

I am also a huge fan of the Bourne Series (the first three books anyway).

What do you do when not writing?

What, there are things to do beside write? :) I love being out in nature, so I try to spend a fair bit of time outside when it’s nice. I read a lot. I spend time with my family hiking, playing games, doing activities, talking, just spending time together. I get together with friends on a regular basis. I like to run, walk, hike… which is good since I like to bake as well.

What’s next for you as a writer?

I have my third suspense novel, Deceitful Truths, coming out late 2013. Yay!. This is a standalone book but is a companion novel to Captured Lies - you will see many of the same characters show up in Deceitful Truths that were in Captured Lies but it is a new person’s journey. I have finished writing it, so it is now out to my beta readers, for feedback. And then it will go through the whole process to publish it.

I plan on continuing to write and publish my suspense novels. I love creating the plots and twists and taking people on a roller coaster of who’s the good guy, who’s the bad guy and keeping them guessing until the end.

Do you have any advice for new writers just entering the shark infested waters?

First off, know that you belong there and you really don’t need to go into the shark infested waters, there are much safer and friendlier places to be. :) There are a lot of authors who would be more than willing to give you some advice, who are there to support you and who are willing to help you. Learn from others, there is a lot of information on the internet and in books that can help you on this journey. Know that you are going to make mistakes, pick yourself up, dust yourself off and keep going. It’s a lot of work but if you love writing and want to do it as a career, then it’s a matter of learning how to play the game. Have fun.
