Wine Pairing for the Blood Vine Series
By Amber Belldene

On our fancier dates nights, my husband and I love to go out to the restaurants in San Francisco that have those great prix fixe menus.  Three courses for $35, and for an extra $20, the wine pairing.  I like it because I would normally never order an appetizer, entree, desert, and three half-glasses of wine.  And when he orders three different things, then we get to taste a lot from the menu. *Wanders off in a salivating reverie while recalling a particularly delicious salmon filet.*

And, I’m back! So, I thought it would be fun to give you my food and wine pairing for the Blood Vine series!

In Blood Vine, we travel with P.R. executive Zoey Porter to meet the Maras family of vampires on their estate in Sonoma County.  (Though, it turns out she’s already met but refused to sleep with Andre.) Plus, Pedro and Lucas meet in the winery’s tasting room in Healdsburg.  When I imagined the opening of the book, I thought of one of my very favorite Zinfandel producers, Seghesio Winery.  They have a lovely tasting room in Healdsburg, CA—a bit more upscale that the Kastel Estate’s small storefront, but a place I heartily recommend if you’re doing a wine country visit. Seghesio also has a great Old Vine Zinfandel that regularly goes on major markdown at my local Safeway grocery store, because every night is not fancy date night and I feel guilty drinking wine that costs more than $12 a bottle on Tuesday. With that OVZ, I would enjoy a grilled cheese on sourdough in the Kastel Estate kitchen, which happens to be the peace-making meal Lena and Zoey share in the book.

In Blood Entangled, Kos is responsible for all the logistics of bottling and distributing the potent Blood Vine, and the Hunters try to stop him at every turn.  When I researched the procedures of a family-sized winery—how they bottle, label, box and ship their wines, I thought of the tiny small-production Nalle.  If you can get your hands on anything they make, especially their quick-to-sell-out Zins, I heartily recommend! In the book, chef and heroine Lena is planning a Croatia meets California menu for the Blood Vine launch party.  With a Nalle Zin, I would gobble up plates of Lena’s stuffed peppers, but skip her grilled sardines in order to leave room for the Baklava.  The scene where Kos helps her find the honey in the pantry is um, sweet ;-)

In Blood Reunited, Bel, Uta and a reluctant Pedro travel to the vampire homeland in Eastern Turkey and uncover the origins of Blood Vine.  I delighted in researching the ancient (as in 8000 years old) winemaking techniques of the Republic of Georgia, especially the famous “black wines” made by leaving the skins and stems to ferment inside the giant ceramic qvevri which are buried underground to keep their temperatures constant. The pictures of wineries using these techniques are breathtaking and I really, really want to go! Of course, I made a point of tasting some of those wines, and Pheasant’s Tears is one widely available in the U.S.  I love it—it’s a very big, bold wine, dry but with lots of fruit. Not for everybody, but a new favorite for me.  In this story, one of my favorite scenes is when Pedro rhapsodizes about his sister-in-law Lena’s cherry pie and realizes his thoughts sound rather naughty.  He doesn’t much care though, because the pie is so good, and I think a slice would pair very nicely with a glass of Pheasant’s Tears!

The boxed set will include a Pedro and Lucas short story for all the fans of the series, called “Blood Eternal.”  It’s short and sweet, and so I think it will deserve a nice port-style Old Vine Zin from one of my favorite little wine-country hole in the walls, Prager.  They make to-die-for desert wines, perfect for a decadent and romantic m/m read!

Whether you’re a wine drinker or not, I hope you find the setting of the Blood Vine series as interesting as I did. And I’d love to hear your thoughts on Blood Eternal—the story is about Pedro and Lucas facing what it means to have an eternity together.

About the Author

I grew up on the Florida panhandle, swimming with alligators, climbing oak trees and diving for scallops…when I could pull myself away from a book. As a child, I hid my Nancy Drew novels inside the church bulletin and read mysteries during sermons—an irony that is not lost on me when I preach these days.

I’m an Episcopal Priest with a bachelor’s degree in religious studies. I believe stories are the best way to explore human truths. Some people think it’s strange for a minister to write romance, but it is perfectly natural to me, because the human desire for love is at the heart of every romance novel and God made people with that desire. I write paranormal, historical and contemporary romance and live with my husband and two children in San Francisco.

Synopsis:

Lady Snow Gwyn is tired of playing "mother" to her seven Vampire Slaying brothers. For the past two years, she's yearned to be out there fighting at their side as they hunt for bloodsuckers in the black of night. Snow is as good a fighter as any man, but she wasn't called to be a Slayer. A mere formality in her book. Prince Sageren, Son of Lothar has spent the last fifty years in exile, awaiting the day when he can finally avenge his family and take back his throne. Barely existing, he's forced to face his inner demons and the monster he once was, compelling him to vow to never drink from humans again. A simple enough task--until he crosses paths with a human who makes his fangs ache to drain her. That's why when Snow runs into Prince Sage on a late night trip to the woods, she's torn between the urge to kill him and the desire to succumb to the feeling he stirs within her. And when Snow's life is threatened by the same evil that murdered his family, Prince Sage must enlist the aid of Snow's brothers to not only help him save her life, but to also regain his rightful place as King of the Vampires. If Sage can keep the Slayers from killing him first.

My Review: I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review

Snow the Vampire Slayer is an intriguing take on the Snow White fairy tale. Ms. Ganiere had me from the first line of the synopsis. Who wouldn't want to trade dwarves for vampire slaying brothers? Add in an exiled vampire prince, a frustrated Snow, and an amnesiac werebear, and you get the recipe for a sweeping epic tale.
The characters in this novel were really great. Snow is supposed to be a 'proper lady', but I think she may have missed the boat on that one. She's one kickass woman in a man's world. Prone to climbing out her window at night while her brothers are sleeping, she heads into the forest to practice sword fighting. Her brothers are fun characters. Each one had a distinct personality, save the twins and their adorable dual personality.
Sage, the exiled vampire prince. I really liked him a lot. Tough, honorable, and desperately sad for a life stolen from him. Just makes me want to comfort him even though he could kill me with one bite. His attraction and interactions with Snow are not only charming but also sexy. And I loved his sidekick, Dax, the amnesiac werebear trying to uncover his past.
If you like kickass heroines, sexy vampires, studly brother vampire slayers, and adorable sidekicks-- then this is the book for you. Part paranormal, part fantasy, Ms. Ganiere has managed to breathe new life into Snow White.

Blog Tour: Two Degrees Closer to Hell by David Fingerman - Excerpt, Review & Giveaway

Two Degrees Closer to Hell
David Fingerman

Blurb-
Speculative fiction writer, David Fingerman, is back with a series of short stories guaranteed to curl your toes and raise your hair. If you're looking for some quick thrills, let these stories take you on a ride that will bring you two degrees closer to Hell.

An excerpt from the short story ‘Hell Mouth’

She materialized halfway down the block. I don't know how I could've missed her. She wore faded blue jeans and a wife beater shirt. Dark brown hair in a pixie cut framed her face. Shouting curses into her cell phone, her free arm waved frantically through the air. She could have been quite lovely except for the look of anguish and the mascara mixed with tears sweeping down her cheeks.
I just about choked on a swallow as she turned the path and walked toward me. Trying to be inconspicuous, I needn't have bothered. So wrapped up in her conversation, she didn't even notice me as she tromped up the steps and marched right past and into the building’s littered hallway. I tried to mind my own business, but when she started rooting through the trash, I had to twist around and look.
"Have a good life with your whore, Frank!" She threw the cell phone down and stomped. With the phone properly decimated, the girl looked up and noticed me.
"What the hell are you staring at?"
I held up my arms in surrender but before I could utter a word she had turned away and continued rooting through junk.
She found an extension cord, the end charred black. After more searching she pulled out a three-legged chair and cleared a space by the banister. As high up as she could go, the girl looped the cord over the railing and tied a slip knot.
My heart pounded as I realized what she meant to do.
What was I supposed to do?
"Excuse me, miss?" What could I tell her, things would get better?
"Miss?" I got to my feet.
She ignored me.
The noose looked crude but effective enough. I stood in the doorway as she balanced herself on the chair and glared right at me.
"All men are pigs!"
She kicked the chair from under her feet.

My Review- I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review

Two Degrees Closer to Hell is a collection of eerie short stories perfect for the Halloween season. Some of the stories had a psychological thriller vibe which I quite enjoyed. As in any collection, there were some I liked a lot more than others. These aren't just slasher stories, they will make you think.

Every story is fast-paced, even the longer ones. I know I'm probably a bit twisted, but the ending on a few made me smirk-- one I wouldn't have guessed in a million years! I really liked this collection. Irony, sarcasm, karma it's all in there.

As far as the scariness factor, there wasn't a single story that scared me... though I've been told that I don't scare easily. That's not to say they weren't eerie or chilling. Will they scare you? Only one way to find out!

Book Blitz: Zoe + the Demon Slayer by Neel Kay - Excerpt, Guest Post & Giveaway

Zoe + the Demon Slayer

Neel Kay

New Adult Fantasy
October 6, 2014

Amazon * iTunes * Kobo * Goodreads

Twenty-four year old book worm and blogger Zoe Graves was looking forward to the fourth and final instalment of her favourite book saga – The Augustin Chronicles. The evening was meant to be spent in line at the local bookstore with hundreds of other fans, getting the book, maybe even meeting the author, and ultimately spending the night with the dreamiest hero of them all, Lucien de Forest and the love of his life Noomi Augustin.

But somewhere someone thought otherwise.

Confused and hurt after a mugging by the bookstore, Zoe is somehow transported to another world, and suddenly finds herself in a snow-covered landscape witnessing a bloody fight far away from the English summer, and is left to rely on the help from the rather reluctant Matis, who just happen to be out to kill none other than Zoe’s favourite hero and heroine, Lucien and Noomi.

Although convinced she might be in some sort of limbo or maybe even in a coma, Zoe figures that her role in the story is to prevent Matis from killing her all-time favourite fictional couple.

Excerpt

His eyes were dark, so very dark, and the equally dark hair, although some of it was braided, didn’t look girly or weird at all. Well, maybe a little weird, seeing as men like him usually only existed in the fantasy books Zoe read and not in the real world. She gaped at the sort of Mohawk the tight braids along the sides of his head and the loose hair on top created.
He squinted. “Stop following me,” he said, practically biting at her. “I don’t have time to save odd damsels in distress.” He picked up a couple of dead rabbits from the ground, turned back around and walked away.
Zoe didn’t move. She could hardly feel her feet anymore. “But what about your cloak?” she yelled after him. “Don’t you need it?”
“Keep it.” He waved a hand in the air and kept up a determined walk on the path that led up to the top of a small hill.
Behind Zoe there was a small piece of forestland. Although she couldn’t be sure, she didn’t imagine anyone lived there. Besides, she wasn’t going back to those dead soldiers, not even to just walk past them. She couldn’t stomach the smell. Everywhere she looked, all that she saw were big black mountains far away in the horizon and the big orangey white sky sending down all that snow.
It was then that Zoe realised that she’d continued her pursuit of the man. She didn’t have any choice really. She’d never been much of an outdoor person, and she wouldn’t last an hour under these conditions.
“You’re still following me,” the man suddenly said. His back was still turned, but he had stopped at the top of the hill. “Even if you’re keeping your distance, you are still following me.” He turned his head and looked at her over his shoulder. “Like a damn cat,” he added, sending her a tired glance.
“But maybe my home is in that direction,” Zoe argued. She was out of breath and her dry throat was killing her. “You did tell me to go home. Maybe that is what I’m doing?”
“But it isn’t, though, is it? You said you were lost.”
“Why won’t you help me?” She’d finally climbed the hill, panting like she was completely out of shape, which she actually wasn’t thanks to Jason. Down there, by the foot of the hill, there was a small cluster of houses that didn’t exactly warrant the description of a village. It was just a few houses pretty much in the middle of nowhere. Wherever that was?
The man glanced at her casually and then suddenly did a double take. The brow curled up and suddenly without any warning, he grabbed her cheeks with both hands and tilted back her head.
Zoe tried to pull away, but found that she didn’t have the strength to fight. Instead, she felt a burning sensation behind her eyes, the very eyes that the man kept staring into.
“Your eyes are green?” he said, looking at her accusingly.
She didn’t know how to respond to that. Her nostrils flared and the cold tore at the insides of her nose. What she wouldn’t give for some warm clothes, a roaring fireplace and some hot chocolate. Oh, and that man out of her face. There was a strange familiar charm to his face, but still, he was a cold-blooded killer who was staring at her funnily.
“Is that a common thing where you’re from?” He let go of her while eyeing her suspiciously.
“I-I guess it’s not that uncommon. Why?”
He shook his head. “What’s your name?” He turned around and started to walk down the hill as if he didn’t really care about the answer to his question. But he kept peering back over his shoulder, his eyes squinted, exuding something resembling surprise.
“Zoe. What’s yours?” She followed him, feeling accepted somehow, and it was such a relief that her chin started to wobble.
He nodded and then stopped peering over his shoulder. “I’m Matis,” he said.
Zoe swallowed and fought hard to keep the tears at bay. “It’s nice to meet you, Matis.”
He stopped abruptly and turned. “Is that it?” he said. But before Zoe had a chance to say anything, he made a low grumbling sound, something resembling an ironic scoff, and then continued marching away.
Zoe was confused. “Um, does that mean you’ll help me?” She had to yell it after him, his long strides making the gap between them grow quickly.
“I’ll get you thawed up,” he yelled back, sounding annoyed again. “And get you into some other clothes, something a bit more seasonally appropriate.”
“Oh my god, you don’t know how happy that makes me.”
“You do know that I’m a killer, don’t you? You saw me kill those soldiers. If I were you, I wouldn’t be so fast to rejoice.”
“It’s either death by you or by hypothermia, and I figured you’d have killed me by now if you wanted to.”
Matis scoffed and then shrugged as if she had a point.
“Besides, I have a sneaking suspicion that I’m already dead and in some sort of purgatory or limbo. Or maybe I've just lost my mind.”
“Wonderful,” Matis exclaimed sarcastically, apparently not really paying too much attention to her. Zoe couldn’t be sure, but he actually seemed offended somehow.

Guest Post by Neel Kay

Eight facts about Worrock (the country in which Zoe + the Demon Slayer takes place. Well, for most part)

1) Worrock is actually in the same world as Bragimark and Niola from “The Witch of Luna Hill”-series. Worrock is the most southern of the three countries.

2) A snake is often depicted in Worrockan jewellery. It represents the Boncrup Snake that vowed to protect the country from outside intruders.

3) Worrock usually has a very mild climate, except for the rather harsh winters - but on the plus side: they are fairly short.

4) The original people of Worrock are the Kraquars of which Matis is one.

5) Worrock is also home of a Niolan line of witches called Isilins - they came to Worrock many years ago. Now, there is only one Isilin left in Worrock, though.

6) Worrock is a popular place to settle down, not least because of the mild climate and short winters, but also because it is known as a peaceful country – except of course when demons wander through an interdimensional portal that leads straight to Worrock.

7) The outer city of Eldgaard is inspired by houses and villages in 19th century Denmark, whereas the village of Neffe is mostly inspired by Viking houses.

8) If you ever did travel to Worrock, you’d probably think you had travelled about 8-900 years back in time. Or possibly that you’d lost your mind.
